Washington, NC: Kayak the Pamlico River

Ask anyone whose GPS had led them to Washington what they love about the town and the answer is always the same: The River.

The Pamlico River runs for 180 miles through North Carolian before it winds its way into Washington. The best way for visitors to experience the river is from the cockpit of a kayak.

There are quite a few places you can rent a kayak to get on the water in Washington. But probably the best known is Inner Banks Outfitters.

Located at the junction of Runyon Creek and the Pamlico River, Inner Banks has been a part of the local scene for about 15 years. Just pop inside and the friendly staff will set you up with what you need: a kayak, a life vest, and a small prayer for enough upper body strength to make it out and back.

Places to see in ( Wilmington - USA )

Wilmington is a port city in North Carolina. It’s known as a gateway to Cape Fear Coast beaches like Wrightsville, with its strong surf, and Carolina, with its long boardwalk. Part of downtown’s Historic District, the Riverwalk is lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. It runs along the Cape Fear River, where the Battleship North Carolina is moored. Artifacts on the ship explore WWII naval combat history.

Wilmington was settled by the English along the Cape Fear River. The city was named after Spencer Compton who was the Earl of Wilmington. Its historic downtown has a 1.75-mile (2.82 km) Riverwalk, developed as a tourist attraction in the late 20th century. In 2014 Wilmington's riverfront was ranked as the Best American Riverfront by readers of USA Today. It is minutes away from nearby beaches. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Wilmington as one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. City residents live between the river and the ocean, with four nearby beach communities: Fort Fisher, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.

Wilmington is the home of EUE Screen Gems Studios, the largest domestic television and movie production facility outside California. Dream Stage 10, the facility's newest sound stage, is the third-largest in the US. It houses the largest special-effects water tank in North America. After the studio's opening in 1984, Wilmington became a major center of American film and television production. Numerous movies in a range of genres and several television series have been produced here, including Maximum Overdrive, Iron Man 3, Fox's Sleepy Hollow, One Tree Hill, Dawson's Creek and NBC's Revolution.

Surfing in Carolina Beach, NC

Learn to surf with an Olympic Gold Medal Champion, Tony Silvagni. Hear why he thinks Carolina Beach, North Carolina is so unique for surfing, and one of the best places to learn surfing.

Carolina Beach to Beaufort , NC ~ don't go Boating on Holidays! ~ w/ Mary Beth & Stephen ~ Ep 113

We finally made it out of the ICW! After leaving Carolina Beach, NC, we traveled up the ICW to Masonboro Inlet where we turned right and out to the Atlantic Ocean and headed to Beaufort NC.

We were so drained and seasick from sailing the outside, we just couldn't go all the way to Beaufort, so we found a place to anchor right next to the coast guard in Atlantic Beach.

After taking the dinghy to the grocery shop at Island Produce ~ The Best organic produce stand ~ and getting fresh-caught flounder and shrimp from the fish stand next door, we headed back to the boat to unload and hang out on the beach.

We spent a couple days playing on our own private beach while the boat rocked in the wakes of the thousands of boaters out enjoying the holiday weekend. It was a bit scary to see so many pleasure boats zipping in and out of the harbor, and we were very glad to be on the sand. It seemed like every minute there was going to be a collision.

As the weekend came to a close, the harbor was a bit quieter and we headed up to Beaufort for a few more days.

Carolina Beach State Park, NC

A hike on December 24, 2018 in the trail system of Carolina Beach State Park, NC. This wonderful state park is located 20 minutes from where I grew up in Wilmington, so I decided to revisit the park on the morning of Christmas Eve. In the past my parents and I primarily walked the Sugarloaf and Flytrap Trails, ignoring the rest of the trails in the park. My goal was to explore most of the trails and areas of interest I've skipped, creating a big loop using the Sugarloaf and Sand Live Oak Trails. In addition to many large white dunes and views of the Cape Fear River, this park includes a variety of ponds and forests providing an excellent representation of the Coastal Plain environment.

Starting at the marina, I followed the Sugarloaf Trail south paralleling the Cape Fear River. Although the weather started cold and windy, I could not have asked for better skies for this hike. There are numerous beaches with open views of the mammoth river as it empties into the Atlantic Ocean a few miles downstream. I did an out-and-back on the Swamp and Flytrap Trails, but did not include any video clips. Honestly the swamp scenery along the Flytrap Trail was underwhelming compared to other areas of the park, and the Swamp Trail is simply a connector passing through dry longleaf savanna.

Arguably the highlight of the hike is the out-and-back on the Oak Toe Trail, which follows a narrow strip of white sand between the river and brackish marsh. After returning to this trail junction the Sugarloaf Trail climbs Sugarloaf Dune, which rises more than 50 feet above the river. Next up was the Sand Live Oak Trail, which continued following the river before turning inland, passing through an expanse of dunes. I left the trail to bag the Pleasure Island high point, then returned to the trail to see an unnamed pond outside the boundary of the park. Beyond the pond the trail passed over the high point of Sand Live Oak Dune and rejoined the Sugarloaf Trail. From there I passed by the three named ponds in quick succession: Cypress Pond, Grass Pond, and Lily Pond. Surprisingly, these three limesink ponds have remarkably different vegetation that gives the ponds their names. The last leg of the Sugarloaf Trail before the marina crossed a boardwalk over a long stretch of cypress swamp, by far the most scenic swamp of the day.
