A History of Pottery - Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art

Mashiko Japan is well known for it's pottery.

The small town is home to multiple potters and has been the home to two different National Living Treasures. Despite saying I would visit the Mashiko Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art sooner I only got to it this year.

The museum had a special exhibit on the dimensions and use of space in pottery. However my primary interest was in the main exhibit about the history of pottery and ceramic production in Mashiko.

In the Cenozoic era (1.5 million years ago) Mashiko was underwater in a swamp. This deposited a layer of clay that has since been buried. At some of the mining sites in Mashiko clay is found from 5.5m under the ground to 8.5meters.

During the paleolithic period, people lived in Mashiko but did not make pottery. The Jomon period saw pottery come to Japan. Joman Pottery was decorated by impressing the wet clay with a cord to make a pattern, hence the name Jomon. As the people became more sedentary their pottery grew larger.

The Yayoi period saw pottery get thinner and new designs added. The Yayoi period saw a more sedentary lifestyle with Bronze and Iron metallurgy and rice paddies for intensive rice cultivation.

The next step was Haji Pottery. This style was made from the Kofun period to the Heian period. They were plain, unglazed, and had a reddish color. Unlike the Yayoi pottery, it lacked decorations and patterns. It became more standardized in design, size, and shape. It spread from western japan to eastern japan. Haniwa were also made as funeral objects. Haniwa are objects like people, horses, houses, or chickens made out of clay and then placed at tombs.

Sue Pottery or Sueki was a contemporary of Haji pottery but fired at a higher temperature and had a blue-gray colour. Locally Mashiko was a center for making Sue Pottery. It was fired at a temperature of about 1100 degrees in tunnel-like furnaces built into the side of hills.

Mashiko's modern ceramics industry is surprisingly new. In 1852 (or 53) when Keisaburo Otsuka discovered that the local clay was ideal for ceramics and started making pottery in Mashiko Town. At this time Mashikoere were was simple with limited use of glazes.

During the Meiji era, the domains lost control of the kilns, and the number of kilns increased. The end of the Edo period saw Mashiko having 13 kilns. This number doubled in the first ten years of the Meiji era. The next decade saw another 27 kilns open. Much of Mashikos pottery was mass-produced with dobin being one of the most common.

Pottery demand slacked at the end of the Meiji era due to gas and electricity becoming more common in Tokyo and other major cities and glass and metal took over in many households and household goods. In July 1913 the Moka line reached Mashiko. in 1914 the telephone lines reached the town. This means shipping pottery was easier than ever before and Mashiko made dobins made their way to more markets

Slacking sales were exacerbated by the Depression in 1920 (Taisho 9.

It was desaster that turned around Mashiko's staggering economy. On September 1st 1923 The Great Kanto Earthquake hit Japan. With a magnitude of 7.9 and a Mercalli rating of 11 . In the aftermath, there was a boom in demand for ceramics as people rebuilt, needed to replace broken cups plates, and everything else. as the shocks were felt around the region. This influx of funds led to a booming economy in Mashiko

The next depression in 1929 hit Mashiko hard again.

Shoji Hamada
In 1924 Shoji Hamada moved to Mashiko and set up shop. He had recently returned to Japan from St. Ives in the UK. He relocated a farmhouse and other buildings that we will see in a later video. Using local materials Shoji quickly became an influential potter in Mashiko and Japan

During WWII (and more so the latter part) Mashiko had a slump as fewer ceramics were in demand. many kilns turned to producing ceramic drainage pipes.

After WWII ended artistic exchange between Japan and other nations skyrocketed. Shoji Hamada was a huge part of that as his work increased Mashiko and Mashiko ware global reputation. A young man named Tatsuzō Shimaoka became his apprentice in 1946.
In 1955 Shji Hamada was recognized as a living national treasure. His former student Tatsuzo Shimaoka was recognized as one in 1996. Students from around the world come to Mashiko to study pottery.

The museum's signs end on an optimistic note, so I will toss in a darker one. Pottery like all arts is subject to economic currents. In the good times when money is flowing people buy. When money is tight, or people are nervous about the future, less money goes into art. Add in that pottery is more difficult, risky, and expensive to ship. COVID has been hard on Mashiko, people are spending less on art. People are traveling less and multiple pottery festivals have been canceled. Hopefully, this upcoming one runs as planned to bring money and trade back into the community
