I’ve traveled Japan for over 12 years, and I never thought Fukui was a place I would plan to visit. It's far from home, not close to any of the major tourist cities...but let me tell you this place is incredible.
I came to Fukui for the $15,000 House in Japan video with Ralph, and while I was there he took me on an adventure that would change the way I look at Japan forever.
There are parts of this trip hit me at my core, and I think that this is a place everyone should visit. I hope you enjoy joining me on this adventure as much as I had exploring Fukui!

丸岡城は、福井県北部の坂井市にある城です。北陸で唯一天守閣が残る城でもあります。この城は、戦国時代に柴田勝家の甥である柴田勝豊が築城したものです。天守閣は、独立式望楼型2重3階で、1階平面を天守台に余分を持たせて造られており、天守台を被せるような腰屋根が掛けられているのがこの天守にしかみられない特徴です。戦国初期の頃の特徴とも言われています。また、築城時には人柱が埋められ、その慰霊碑が天守横に築かれています。丸岡城は小さいながらも味わいのある名城です。

Maruoka Castle is located in Sakai City in northern Fukui Prefecture. It is also the only castle in the Hokuriku region that still has a castle tower. The castle was built during the Warring States period by Katsuyasu Shibata, a nephew of Katsuie Shibata. The castle tower is a freestanding watchtower type, two-story and three-story structure, with the first floor plane built with extra space for the keep and a hip roof that covers the keep, which is a unique feature of this castle tower. It is said to be a characteristic of the early Warring States period. During the construction of the castle, human pillars were buried, and a monument to them is built next to the castle tower. Although Maruoka Castle is small, it is a famous castle where you can learn about the past.

First built in 1606, the area around Fukui Castle once flourished due to the Echizen-Matsudaira clan. At the time, the famous castle had a height of 37m and a castle tower with four levels and five floors, but it was burned down in a great fire. Currently, the prefectural government offices are built on the site with the surviving stone walls and moat showing what it was like back in the day.

In the city center, surrounded by 3 moats, the massive, keyhole-shaped Daisen Kofun is the 5th-century tomb of the Emperor Nintoku. East, the Mihara History Museum displays artifacts from the nearby Kurohime-yama Kofun. The hexagonal, 1877 Old Sakai Lighthouse overlooks the harbor.
