This site documents the efforts of amateur paleontologist Clyde Wynia to excavate and recreate as best as possible the now extinct creatures that inhabited the large McMillan Marsh near Marshfield, Wisconsin during the Iron Age. The flesh and bones of all the marsh creatures were ferrous metal, usually mild steel, but occasionally stainless, high carbon or various types of more exotic alloys. Many of the iron species died out when farming and industry moved into the area in the mid 19th century. The creatures were often harvested for their parts that were then used in farm and industrial machinery. Over-harvesting eventually led to extinction of many species. Other species became extinct when acid rain caused them to rust over. Good rust inhibitors, which could have slowed the oxidation, were not readily available to these creatures to save them from the corrosive effects of increasing industrial pollution. Our Secret Beach at Rexhame Beach in Marshfield, Massachusetts #shorts
The Secret Beach
Rexhame means the place of the king or sachem. It was the home of an Indian leader at the mouth of the North and South Rivers. However, in 1898, the Portland Gale opened the mouth of the North River at Fourth Cliff, and the old mouth at Rexhame filled in with fine sand. Today, Rexhame Beach is one of our hidden gems with sandy beaches, rolling dunes, and a slow-moving river.
Trails loop along the ocean, through the dunes, and beside the river. If you walk all the paths, it is a 1.8-mile walk. The soft sand will tire you in an hour.
Views on the beach go up to Humarock and down to Brant Rock. The soft sand is so different from the round rocks up at Humarock and the granite ledge down Brant Rock.
Every time I walk the dunes, I feel that I am discovering it again. The dunes feel like a safe place. A place where I can nestle in the sand. Although, they are so fragile that one big storm could wash Rexhame. The wind and the waves work to erase Rexhame Beach. Only the delicate grasses, juniper trees, and bayberry bushes hold the sand. The dunes' fragility teaches me to live in the moment.
Maybe, it is because the dunes are so vulnerable that I feel protected here. Maybe, it is because people care about this beach so much. And maybe, it is because people have worked so hard to preserve it. You can see the love in these benches that offer contemplative rest bits for wanderers.
The South River flows behind the dunes. It changes with the ebb and flow of the tides, filling and draining the dunes and marshes. Its constant movement is what makes this place feel forever new.
Rexhame Beach is a gem that you don't want to miss.
