Hythe Town - Where the Forest Meets the Sea

The Parish Council is one of the original Parishes having been formed in 1894 as part of the Local Government Act of that year. It was initially called Dibden Parish Council but underwent a change of name in 1983 to give recognition to the importance of Hythe as the focal centre of the Parish.

The Parish comprises three communities Dibden, Hythe and Dibden Purlieu. The development of the Parish, almost totally for residential purposes, means that the three now have merged into one.

The Parish which, is the third largest (in terms of population) in the New Forest District Council area, lies on the eastern boundary of the District Council. It is situated on the banks of Southampton Water and covers an area of approximately 6 square miles with a resident population of approximately 20,000 in some 8600 dwellings.

There are good travel links from the Hythe area with the M27 some 10 miles north providing direct access to the motorway network linking to London (77 miles), Birmingham (128 miles). The rail link from Southampton gives a 70 minute link to London. Southampton is a twelve minute ferry journey from Hythe Pier. Southampton and Bournemouth Airports are within a half hours drive.

The Council owns or controls approximately 200 acres of public land in the Parish including Prospect Place which fronts onto Southampton Water, nine equipped play areas with others coming on line in the future,a multi-purpose sports centre and a parish hall.

In addition the Council owns The Grove, which is a one stop shop for the Parish Council and New Forest District Council's Local Information Office as well as several local Voluntary Organisations including the CAB and the Disability Advice Centre.

The Council owns 3 Allotment sites. The demand for allotments is high and there is a waiting list for vacant plots

A number of bus shelters, seats and litter bins are provided and maintained by the Council.

GBRf 'This Time It's Personal' Day 2 - Marchwood MOD

With last year's GBRf Charity tour having to be cancelled, this year's return would see it visit Marchwood MOD base.
With Class 59 No.59003 in charge for the outward leg, Class 73's No.73136 & 73201.
We pick up the action at the disused Marchwood Station, containing Hampshire's last mechanical signal box.
The signallman is seen opening up the gates and clearing the route.
With the base visited it was time for the next leg to Eastleigh yard, with the two 73's in charge. The train is then seen at Tavels Lane crossing in Marchwood.
With the tour being moved around Eastleigh yard by an 08, there was plenty of time to set up at Shawford, where the 73's would be on the juice for the leg to Acton.
Sparks fly, as the pair head up the main bang on time.

Part 1 - Southampton to Milford on Sea • Driving the entire coastline of Great Britain

Come with us on an epic real time drive clockwise around the entire coastline of Great Britain!

Part 1 - Day 1 - Saturday 29th May 2021

Southampton (Red Funnel Ferry Terminal) - Eling - Marchwood - Dibden Purlieu - Beaulieu - Lymington - Milford on Sea

After a year of all the Covid lockdowns and restrictions, one of the things we really missed was the liberating feeling of standing on the beach, and looking out to sea. So once lockdown sufficiently eased, in a moment of slight madness we decided that we should try to see as much sea as we possibly could. And what better way to do that than travel around the entire coastline of Great Britain?!

It was our intention to drive from Southampton to Plymouth over the Bank Holiday weekend, but as you will find out in a later video, things didn't go entirely to plan!

We unfortunately don't have the time and resources currently to do the whole trip on in one solid lump, so this will be a project which we will undertake over the next year or so as and when we can. We may also have to do some parts out of sequence, but bear with us, by the end we will have footage of driving the entire British coastline.

Why start/end in Southampton?

1) We have to start and end somewhere!
2) It's pretty easy to get to from where we live.
3) It's roughly in the centre of the south coast.
4) It has been the start/end point of many an epic voyage over the centuries, so it seemed a nice place to choose.

Things we learned on Day 1...

1) We saw surprisingly and rather disappointingly little sea proportional to the distance we travelled. While many roads can look close to the coast on the map, the sea is often out of view.
2) Because any sat-nav or mapping app will try to get you from A to B via the most efficient route, it's not really suitable for a trip like this. You therefore have to break it down into very short hops, and constantly know the next checkpoint to find.
3) When recording constantly on an action camera, you must keep an eye on the battery to avoid losing valuable footage. Our camera has a blue light that flashes all the while it is recording, so you have to be on guard, ready with a fresh battery when the flashing stops. We lost maybe 10 minutes or so of footage around Christchurch when we didn't realise that the battery had died.
4) Don't assume that Siri is sensible when it comes to asking for directions. We asked for directions from Milford on Sea to Christchurch, and rather than give us directions to the Christchurch 10 miles away, it gave us directions to Christchurch in New Zealand 11,500 miles away! (The same also happened later in the trip when we asked for directions to Portland - we guessed correctly, it didn't indeed give us directions to Portland, Oregon. So much for artificial intelligence, eh?!)

We hope you enjoy our epic journey, if so, please give us the thumbs up, and subscribe to our channel to keep up to date with our travels.

Thanks for watching
