Bruges, Belgium : Walkthrough the famous tourists places, sights and attractions of Bruges (Brugge)

Bruges (/bruːʒ/; Dutch: Brugge [ˈbrʏɣə]; French: Bruges [bʁyːʒ]) is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country.

The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 1,075 hectares off the coast, at Zeebrugge (from Brugge aan zee[2] meaning Bruges by the Sea[3]). The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is oval and about 430 hectares in size. The city's total population is 117,073 (1 January 2008),[4] of whom around 20,000 live in the city centre. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 616 km2 (238 sq mi) and has a total of 255,844 inhabitants as of 1 January 2008.[5]

Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance thanks to its port and was once one of the world's chief commercial cities.[6][7] Bruges is well known as the seat of the College of Europe, an elite university institute for European studies regarded as the EU's very own Oxbridge.

Sights
Bruges has most of its medieval architecture intact, making it one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe.[30] The historic centre of Bruges has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.[31] Many of its medieval buildings are notable, including the Church of Our Lady, whose brick spire reaches 122.3 m (401.25 ft), making it one of the world's highest brick towers/buildings. The sculpture Madonna and Child, which can be seen in the transept, is believed to be the only of Michelangelo's sculptures to have left Italy within his lifetime.

Bruges' most famous landmark is its 13th-century belfry, housing a municipal carillon comprising 48 bells.[32] The city still employs a full-time carillonneur, who gives free concerts on a regular basis.

Other famous buildings in Bruges include:

The Béguinage (Dutch: Begijnhof)
The Basilica of the Holy Blood (Dutch: Heilig-Bloedbasiliek). The relic of the Holy Blood, which was brought to the city after the Second Crusade by Thierry of Alsace, is paraded every year through the streets of the city. More than 1,600 inhabitants take part in this mile-long religious procession, many dressed as medieval knights or crusaders.
The modern Concertgebouw (Concert Building)
The Old St. John's Hospital
The Saint Salvator's Cathedral
The Groeningemuseum, which has an extensive collection of medieval and early modern art, including a notable collection of Flemish Primitives. Various masters, including Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck, lived and worked in Bruges.
The City Hall on the Burg (Bruges) (nl; Burg (Brugge)) square
The Provincial Court (Provinciaal Hof)
The preserved old city gateways: the Kruispoort, the Gentpoort, the Smedenpoort and the Ezelpoort. The Dampoort, the Katelijnepoort and the Boeveriepoort are gone.

History
See also: Timeline of Bruges
Origins[edit]
Bruges was a location of coastal settlement during prehistory. This Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement is unrelated to medieval city development. In the Bruges area, the first fortifications were built after Julius Caesar's conquest of the Menapii in the first century BC, to protect the coastal area against pirates. The Franks took over the whole region from the Gallo-Romans around the 4th century and administered it as the Pagus Flandrensis. The Viking incursions of the ninth century prompted Count Baldwin I of Flanders to reinforce the Roman fortifications; trade soon resumed with England and Scandinavia. Early medieval habitation starts in the 9th and 10th century on the Burgh terrain, probably with a fortified settlement and church[citation needed]

Hi Guys,

In this video, we are saying goodbye to Amsterdam where we had our overnight stay and going to Paris via our coach but we will be doing city tour of Brussels on our way.

Firstly we visit Brussels market where we see Manneken Pis which is a monument of a child peeing. This is in reference to a story where a kid which was angry for taking away their land by a colony, peed on the army while they were marching in. So we took a lot of photos and videos kind of fun we can say.

Then nearby is a shop to purchase famous Belgium Dark Chocolate but then be sure you are purchasing Vegan chocolates if you don't eat eggs coz majority of shops have chocolates which contains eggs.

Then we saw Brussels Grand Palace which in the older generation was the King's Palace and now is the Parliamentary Offices. Too many different types of groups which came to visit the Brussels market were from India, China, Taiwan, Mexico and many European countries.

Then we went for lunch and then to Atomium. Our coach then was on the way to Paris. In the Bus, we played mafia game which had around 10-12 players. A good time pass in the bus which we played everyday when there was a long journey.

We had our dinner in Paris where we ate the delicious Bombay Pav bhaji, pulao, panner ki sabzi and sweet jalebi. Never forget the delicious curd in Europe which always blows our mind.

Finally, we reached our stay in Paris and you can our amazing room which has a balcony too.

Belgium travel tip : Hill 60 - Ypres - Belgium flanders trip #Belgium

Hill 60 is a World War I battlefield memorial site and park in the Zwarteleen area of Zillebeke south of Ypres, Belgium. It is located about 4.6 kilometres (2.9 mi) from the centre of Ypres and directly on the railway line to Comines. Before World War I the hill was known locally as Côte des Amants (French for Lover's Knoll). The site comprises two areas of raised land separated by the railway line; the northern area was known by soldiers as Hill 60 while the southern part was known as The Caterpillar.

In the collapsed tunnels beneath Hill 60, many British and German dead are buried. The Belgian government made the hill and the surrounding enclosure a battlefield memorial site and to preserve it, far as nature permits, in the state in which it was left after World War I. The park at the memorial site is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). The memorial park also has the remains of several bunkers and craters from the fighting from 1915–1917. A large concrete bunker in the centre of the site is preserved almost as it was found at the end of the war. This bunker was originally German, but modified by the Australians in 1918.

Royal Palace Stockholm (Sweden), Travel Video | We Travel

The Royal Palace and the surrounding houses that were built between the 13th and 18th centuries are located here.

The Tre Kronor Castle was built at the end of the 1100s. For centuries, it was a fortress, then from 1520 a royal palace. It got its name from the spire decorations of the church tower.

In 1697, the corpse of Karl XI was lying in state in the Tre Kronor when a fire broke out and destroyed almost the whole palace. In the northern wing of the royal palace, a new exhibition reminds us of the old castle.
The statues of the southern facade are works of French masters.

The royal family moved into the palace planned by Nicodemus Tessin in 1754. The square-shaped building surrounds a closed inner courtyard. Each of its wings represents different styles. Its eastern wings frame a terrace which is like a park. On the opposite side, a semi-circular arch embraces the inner courtyard where the changing of the guard is held.

The palace is no longer the residence of the ruling family, but here are the offices of Karl Gustav XVI and Queen Silvia and receptions for visiting heads of state and rulers are held here, as well as the swearing-in of ambassadors and other official ceremonies and evening parties.

Most of the palace, consisting of 609 rooms, is a museum. Here is the treasury, the royal chapel, the throne-room, the gallery of Karl XI, the bedroom of Gustav III and his antique Roman collection.
On the semicircular square, there is a changing of guard each day at noon, which is today a popular tourist attraction.
