Starting at the old Maldon Railway I take you on a journey uncovering the history of the great battle of Maldon between the Saxons and the Vikings. From there I accost some local ladies down a back street to talk about the famous Fat Man of Maldon and show you where he is buried. After popping in to the brilliant woof and co I take you around Hythe Quay and Promenade park for a museum tour and to meet some proper Maldon characters!

Places to see in ( Maldon - UK )
Maldon is a town on the Blackwater estuary in Essex, England. Maldon is the seat of the Maldon District and starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. It is most renowned for Maldon Sea Salt which is produced in the area.
Maldon is a town of circa 15000 people on the tidal River Chelmer by the Blackwater Estuary in Essex. It is on the A414 10 miles (16 km) east of Chelmsford, and 49 miles (79 km) north east of Charing Cross, London, using the A13.
Essex is a county built on London clay, overlain with pockets of gravel deposited by riperian action, the lowest land is made up of river alluvium and salt marsh. At Maldon the railway cutting (now a road cutting) provided a reference section for geologists. There are three landslips on the north-facing river cliff of the Blackwater at Maldon. The middle slip is called the West Maldon Landslip, which was caused by repeated rotational slips of the bedrock London Clay, which is trying to reach a stable angle.
Hythe Quay at the confluence of the Chelmer and Blackwater, which flanks the northern edge of the town, was an important port, and Cooks Yard remains significant for Thames barges. The River Blackwater, that was diverted into the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, re-emerges into the Blackwater Estuary, through locks at the Heybridge Basin, the stream bed passes down Heybridge Creek. and this delinearates the border between Maldon Town and Heybridge Parish Council.
Maldon's first railway link was a branch line to Witham opened in 1846. Later a second line linked Maldon with Woodham Ferrers on the Crouch Valley Line between Southminster and Wickford line. Whilst Wickford is itself on the line between Shenfield and Southend (thus providing Maldon with another route into London Liverpool Street), a short-lived spur line at Wickford also gave direct access towards Southend.
Maldon West railway station was opened in 1889 by the Great Eastern Railway. The line between Maldon and South Woodham Ferrers closed to passengers in 1939, the Maldon and Witham line closed in 1966. The nearest railway stations to Maldon are now Hatfield Peverel, Witham and North Fambridge. Hatfield Peverel is the closest railway station to the north of the town, whilst North Fambridge is closest to southern parts of the town.

As a disclaimer, this list is neither a social commentary, nor a guide on which are the nicest towns to live, but purely a judgement on the aesthetics of each respective town centre.

What are the best places to live in England? Where you would consider the best cities to live in England will depend on your goal, desire, and purpose. For instance, Oxford is ranked by those looking to work as the best place to live in the UK. But those looking at developmental angle consider Yorkshire will think otherwise. Thus, you would hardly have two rankings agreeing on the same set of the best cities to live in the United Kingdom. Now, considering the totality of indicators used by different assessing bodies, we come up with the following 15 cities as the best cities to live in England.
15. Maldon
On the Blackwater Estuary, you will find Maldon, the home of a picturesque promenade park and several spectacular coastal views. Cyclists consider this town full of beautiful historic buildings a haven. The cost of living here is a bit lower than the Essex average. Because it's a place with low rainfall, you will enjoy a lot of outdoor activities and pursue plenty of leisure.
14. Hart
Let us go and find you nice accommodation in southeast England. You will get a nice place to live in Hart which is one of the wealthiest areas in the UK. The crime rate is low and earnings are high.

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

Maldon is a wonderfully preserved, historic gold-mining town with a rich history, lovely cafes, galleries and antique shops. It is Australia's First Notable Town, and as you wander around town, you will see old-fashioned shop fronts, original stone buildings and charming cottages.

Take a ride on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, an authentic steam train that travels between Maldon and Castlemaine.
Enjoy the Historic Town walk, where you will see lovely old churches, significant buildings, hotels, bakeries and more.

That's why we want to look at these 10 most loved towns in England to see why they're loved.
Some of these towns are neatly tucked away, in rolling green hills, on rugged cliffs, near forests, or moorland. Others have beaches and rivers. 10. Selby
We start off with Selby a town in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. It is a market town and civil parish in the Selby District. With its status as a town council, Selby is 14 miles south of York on the River Ouse. The town with a population of 14,731 is one of the 10 most loved towns in England.
There used to be a large shipbuilding industry in this town which was historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was also an important port on the Selby Canal that was bringing trades from Leeds. Something to be loved about this town is the market towns and picturesque villages. It’s one of the most loved also because house prices there are lower and people get more for their money.

When Frome was listed among one of the “Best Places to Live in Britain” by a popular ranking, we know it’s going to be one of the most loved towns in the country. Now, this town and civil parish in eastern Somerset is the ninth most loved town in England. Frome is built on uneven high ground on the Mendip Hills, at the eastern end and it centers on the River Frome.
The town about 13 miles south of Bath and the largest in the Mendip District of Somerset is loved for being welcoming, charming, and vibrant. A part of the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome, it has a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty. People from outside the town love it for its tranquility and antiquity.

Of course, North Yorkshire has a lot of loved towns, and this civil parish on the Blackwater estuary in Essex is just one of them. 7. Hart
We would love to include Hart here even though it is a local government district. It’s in Hampshire and derived its name from the River Hart with its council based in Fleet. Formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972, it doesn’t have city status. However, it’s a merger of the urban district of Fleet, and the Hartley Wintney Rural District.
We consider Hart one of the most loved places in England after it was named the best place to live in Britain by the 2017 Halifax Quality of Life study. It’s indeed one of the richest and least deprived areas in the entire United Kingdom, according to the Indices of Deprivation 2015. The town ranked 326th least deprived out of 326 local authorities in England. That’s why people love Hart.

Maldon Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Essex, and around 15 miles southwest of Colchester, is the town of Maldon.
The recorded history of Maldon dates back to circa 913 AD where it appears in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as 'Maeldun', meaning 'crucifix hill'. During this period, King Edward the Elder stationed his army and fleet here, and transformed it into a burh, i.e. fortified settlement to protect against the threat of Viking invasion. However, in 991 AD, during the reign of Æthelred the Unready, the Danes scored a victory against the native Saxons at the Battle of Maldon.
In 1171 a royal charter was granted to Maldon by Henry II. The town's most famous industry is, arguably, sea salt. This is believed to have been harvested from the Blackwater Estuary just east of the town centre since the time of the Domesday Book. But it was in 1882 with the founding of the Maldon Salt Company that the town's association with sea salt began to develop into a household name, continuing until the present day with various celebrity chefs endorsing it. Although celebrity chef endorsements must be taken with a pinch of salt (sorry, couldn't resist).
Maldon was once a significant port, with as many as 2,000 sailing barges operating from here at its peak. Additionally, barges were manufactured here. Only a few remain today, having been repurposed for preservation. They are claimed to be the last cargo vessels in the world still operating under sail.
There are over 200 listed buildings in Maldon, and a few among these with Grade I status. Notable examples, in order of appearance, include the Church of St Mary (seen just after the 6-minute mark) from the 12th century with 14th century additions, the 14th century tower of the former church of St Peter (seen around the 15-minute mark), which now forms part of a library, and the Church of All Saints (seen at the 18-and-a-half-minute mark) from the 13th century with its unique triangular tower.
In 1848 the first of two former railway stations in Maldon opened. This was followed, in 1889, by a second, at which point the original was renamed from Maldon to Maldon East, and later Maldon East and Heybridge, while the newer one was called Maldon West. The former was the southern terminus of a branch line to Witham, linking the town up to the Great Eastern Main Line, and the latter was part of a branch line to Woodham Ferrers, until it closed in 1939. The original station closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts - a controversial scheme to encourage road travel by closing over 2,000 stations in Great Britain. Today, public transport to Maldon consists of direct buses from Chelmsford, Witham, Burnham-on-Crouch and various nearby towns and villages.

The Beach Huts make excellent bases for the day and come equipped with a cupboard, deckchairs, internal lighting, as well as an electrical plug socket.
Named after birds found in the local area, the Beach Huts are close to the popular Splash Park and Valley Play Area as well as being a short walk to the town of Maldon.
The beach huts can be hired for the day and are inspected and cleaned each morning prior to the booking to ensure that they are ready for your arrival.

Maldon is a town and civil parish on the Blackwater estuary in Essex, England. It is the seat of the Maldon District and starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. It is most renowned for Maldon Sea Salt which is produced in the area.
Hythe Quay is the residence of a number of Thames sailing barges, these are among the last cargo vessels in the world still operating under sail, albeit now used in the spheres of education and leisure. Some ten to fifteen of the surviving fleet count Maldon as their home port, and many others are regular visitors alongside at the Quay. An annual sailing barge race ends with a parade of sail and prize-giving at the quay. Cooks Yard, where barges were once built, is still working at the end of Maldon Quay.
