Macapá ( IPA : [ makaˈpa ] ) is a Brazilian municipality, the capital of the state of Amapá, the North Region of the country. Its estimated population in 2021 is 522,357 inhabitants, making it the 51st most populous municipality in Brazil and the fifth most populous in the North Region. [ 1 ] It is located in the southeast of the state and is the only Brazilian state capital that does not have road connections to other capitals. [ 8 ] In addition, it is the only one crossed by the Equator and is located on the coast of the Amazon River, 1,791 kilometers from Brasília.
The municipality has the 94th largest gross domestic product in the nation, with 8.9 billion reais, and is the fifth richest city in northern Brazil, accounting for 2.85% of all gross domestic product (GDP) in the region. In the Amazon, it is the third largest urban agglomeration, with 3.5% of the population of the entire Northern Region of Brazil, bringing together in its metropolitan region almost 560 thousand inhabitants. Approximately 60% of the state's population lives in the capital. [ 9 ] Its area is 6,407 km² representing 4.4863% of the State, 0.1663% of the Region, and 0.0754% of the entire Brazilian territory [ 10????????

1 - Praça Floriano Peixoto
Criada em 23 janeiro de 1922, a Praça Floriano Peixoto é considerada um dos cartões postais mais belos de Macapá, graças à sua abundante arborização e fácil acesso ao público. Uma vez por ano é colocado cerca de duas toneladas de peixe no lago da praça Floriano Peixoto para a tradicional pescaria coletiva que acontece sempre no dia 1º de Maio, em comemoração ao Dia do Trabalhador.
2 - Marco Zero do Equador
Um dos mais interessantes pontos turísticos de Macapá é formado por um monumento construído sobre a linha imaginária do Equador que divide a Terra em dois hemisférios. Conta com um obelisco de aproximadamente 30 m de altura com uma abertura circular no centro, onde o sol incide na época do equinócio - fenômeno que acontece somente nos meses de março e setembro. O complexo contempla ainda terraço, espaço para shows, além de salão para exposição, restaurante e loja de produtos artesanais.
3 - Fortaleza de São José do Macapá
Quem visita esta fortificação militar, tombada em 1950 como Patrimônio Histórico Nacional, faz uma viagem no tempo do Brasil colônia, seja pelo seu incrível estado de conservação ou pelas curiosidades que aguçam o imaginário humano. Localizada no centro da cidade e as margens do rio amazonas, a entrada para visitação é franca e acontece diariamente.
4 - Casa do Artesão
É o maior centro de artesanato amapaense. Possibilita a exposição e a comercialização de trabalhos dos artesões locais e também indígenas, fomentando a atividade artesanal e promovendo a geração de emprego e renda aos artesões do Estado. Na confecção das peças são utilizados o vime, madeira, argila, fibra vegetal, sementes, penas, entre outros elementos retirados da natureza, sem impactar o meio ambiente.
5 - Igreja Matriz de São José de Macapá
A Igreja Matriz de São José de Macapá foi inaugurada em 6 de março de 1761 e é o monumento mais antigo da cidade. É possível encontrar em seu interior a imagem original de São José, esculpida em madeira. Em 17 de março de 2015, a Igreja foi tombada e tornou-se patrimônio histórico e cultural do Amapá, através da Lei nº 1.870.
6 - Museu Sacaca
O Museu Sacaca (Centro de Pesquisas Museológicas Museu Sacaca) é uma instituição cultural e científica localizada em Macapá. Inaugurado em 1997, o museu tem o objetivo de promover ações museológicas de pesquisa, preservação e comunicação, abrangendo o saber científico e o saber popular dos povos amazônicos, além de divulgar as pesquisas realizadas pelo IEPA, por meio de exposições e atividades didáticas.
7 - Mercado Central de Macapá
O Mercado Central é um dos pontos turísticos mais visitados da capital amapaense. Inaugurado em 1953, foi considerado o reduto de compras das famílias amapaenses nos anos 1950. O Mercado foi reinaugurado em 16 de janeiro de 2020 com uma nova estrutura: 63 boxes, três vezes mais que antigamente, elevador para acessibilidade, novos banheiros, calçamento e jardim com chafariz.
8 - Orla de Macapá
A orla da cidade é urbanizada e é um convite para uma caminhada ou para um piquenique, algo que os macapaenses fazem muito. A parte mais interessante fica perto da fortaleza, onde existem vários quiosques com bares e restaurantes. Esse é um ótimo lugar pra curtir a noite também, com música ao vivo e ruas fechadas com atrações para as crianças.
9 - Trapiche ELIEZER LEVY
Esse píer construído na década de 40 ganhou novos ares nos últimos anos. O trapiche tem 472 metros de comprimento e é servido por um bondinho elétrico para transporte de turistas, sorveteria, área coberta, estação de embarque e desembarque de passageiros, restaurante e uma pequena praça. O local também oferece uma visão diferente de Macapá, do rio para a cidade.
10 - Quilombo do Curiaú
A Vila do Curiaú é uma comunidade tradicional localizada a oito quilômetros da cidade de Macapá, a capital do Amapá, onde as famílias remanescentes de quilombolas ainda guardam na memória a história dos seus antepassados. O Curiaú é também uma área de preservação ambiental (APA), que tem como objetivo a proteção e conservação dos recursos naturais e ambientais da região.

Etymology
The toponymy is of Tupi origin , as a variation of macapaba , which means place of many bacabas , a palm tree native to the region ( Oenocarpus bacaba Mart.). According to the Tupinologist Eduardo de Almeida Navarro , however, the toponym Macapá originates from the northern general language term macapaba , which means place of macabas ( macaba , macaba + aba , place). [ 11 ] According to the Aurélio Dictionary , macaba is a fruit tree in the backlands . [ 12 ]
