10 Most Miserable Towns in the UK

What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

10 Worst Seaside Resort Towns in The UK

What are the worst seaside resorts in the UK? Anyone leaving home to spend some time at a resort is going with high expectations. There are tons of things to do at seaside resorts. However, it’s not all seaside resorts that live up to their designation. Some of them could be better described as anything else but resorts. Some of these pseudo-seaside resorts are there in the UK. We hereby present to you the 10 worst seaside resorts in the UK.
After considering each of them, the choice is yours to patronize them or steer clear of them. These seaside resorts in the UK were rated based on several features that are expected in seaside resorts and they were weighted over 100 points. The following are the scores.
10. Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England
Burnham-on-Sea is a seaside town located in Somerset, England. You would be fair to this place at the mouth of the Parrett River, upon Bridgwater Bay, if you reckon with it as a fishing village or town, for the sake of respect, that it used to be until the late 1700s when it began to grow.
While the park at Burnham-on-Sea was lovely with clean facilities and lots of activities, the resort could not score more than 48 points. The onsite pizza costs too much; you need a 10-minute walk to get a better deal. Most of the accommodation here is caravans without heating in the bedrooms. The bedding quality of the rooms is begging to be upgraded.
9. Colwyn Bay, Conwy, Wales
Colwyn Bay, a town and community in Conwy County Borough cannot escape our attention. Conwy is on the north coast of Wales where it is overlooking the Irish Sea. The town of Colwyn Bay is recognized as a seaside resort within the historic county of Denbighshire, no doubt. But what is in doubt is the quality of the resort. From what we know Colwyn Bay can’t earn more than 58 points.
Yes, the clean rooms, the security, and proximity to the North Wales Expressway, the railway station, and the beach count for something. However, the services were generally poor. The rooms are freezing without a heater and electrical fittings including plumbing were not being maintained. The food options were zero.
8. Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
Then next is Great Yarmouth. Joining them in removing the prefix “great,” let’s comfortably join in referring to it by just Yarmouth which is more fitting than Great Yarmouth. In any case, it is recognized as a seaside resort town in Norfolk, there in England. Straddling the River Yare, it is located 30 kilometers east of Norwich.
As a seaside resort, Yarmouth ties with its more neighborly Burnham-on-Sea and Colwyn Bay in Wales to score 58. Though it has sandy beaches and two historic piers, amusement rides, and restaurants, Yarmouth as Norfolk’s flagship beach town is always crammed. Holidaymakers during the summertime suffer disorderliness here as if there are more services than the management could handle in an organized manner.
7. Morecambe, Lancashire, England
Morecambe is a town in the City of Lancaster in Lancashire, England. It’s hard to understand why Morecambe is still being referred to as a seaside resort. Up until the mid-20th century, it was a thriving seaside resort. Then it was home to the country’s largest Pontins resort.

MABLETHORPE | Tour of seaside holiday town Mablethorpe England

MABLETHORPE | Tour of seaside holiday town Mablethorpe England from the town centre to the seafront and beach. Prepare for holiday fun with Donkey Rides, Amusement Arcades, Pubs, Fish and Chips Shops and more! Whether or not Mablethorpe is a fun place to visit for a holiday largely depends on your preferences and interests.

Here are some factors to consider:

Beaches: Mablethorpe has long stretches of sandy beaches, making it appealing for those who enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and building sandcastles.

Seaside Attractions: The town offers typical seaside attractions like amusement arcades, candy floss stands, and beachfront cafes. It's a popular destination for families with young children.

Nature and Wildlife: If you appreciate nature, Mablethorpe is close to the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, which are great places for hiking and birdwatching.

Peace and Relaxation: Mablethorpe is not as bustling as some other tourist hotspots, which might appeal to those seeking a quieter, more relaxed holiday.

Nightlife and Entertainment: While it may not have a vibrant nightlife scene, there are pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy a pleasant evening.

Accessibility: Mablethorpe is relatively easy to reach by car, and there are good transport links to nearby towns and cities.

On the flip side, some potential drawbacks could include limited entertainment options for teenagers and young adults, as well as unpredictable weather typical of the British seaside.

Ultimately, whether Mablethorpe is a fun place to visit for a holiday depends on your preferences and what you're looking for in a vacation destination. If you enjoy a traditional, laid-back seaside experience with beautiful beaches and nature nearby, then Mablethorpe could be a suitable choice. However, if you're seeking a more vibrant and bustling holiday destination with a wide range of activities and attractions, you might want to explore other options.

Mablethorpe offers various attractions and activities for holidaymakers and tourists, especially those who enjoy a traditional seaside experience. Here are some of the things Mablethorpe has to offer:

Sandy Beaches: Mablethorpe is known for its long, sandy beaches, which are ideal for sunbathing, building sandcastles, beachcombing, and enjoying seaside picnics.

Amusement Arcades: The town has several amusement arcades where visitors can play games and enjoy classic seaside entertainment.

Candy Floss and Fish & Chips: Enjoy traditional British treats like candy floss (cotton candy) and fish & chips at various vendors along the seafront.

Donkey Rides: During peak holiday seasons, you can find donkey rides on the beach, which can be a fun activity for families with children.

Seaside Attractions: Mablethorpe offers a range of traditional seaside attractions, such as funfair rides, mini-golf courses, and souvenir shops.

Lincolnshire Wolds AONB: If you're interested in nature and outdoor activities, Mablethorpe is relatively close to the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You can explore beautiful countryside and enjoy scenic walks.

Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve: Just a short drive away, Gibraltar Point provides opportunities for birdwatching and exploring diverse wildlife and natural habitats.

Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre: This attraction allows visitors to learn about seals and other marine animals while supporting the conservation efforts of the sanctuary.

Relaxation and Tranquility: If you're seeking a peaceful and relaxed holiday, Mablethorpe's quieter atmosphere might be just what you're looking for.

It's essential to keep in mind that Mablethorpe is a smaller seaside town, and while it offers a charming and traditional British coastal experience, it may not have the same level of attractions and nightlife as larger tourist destinations. However, if you appreciate a laid-back and family-friendly vacation spot with beautiful beaches and nearby natural areas, Mablethorpe can be a delightful choice for a holiday.

Sightseeing at Mablethorpe - 09/06/2021

Filmed on 09/06/2021. Before we cross the Humber Bridge back into East Yorkshire, we decided to stop of at a popular seaside resort in Lincolnshire which isn't Skegness. Yep, this is my childhood memories of Mablethorpe (Season 8 Episode 19)

As a child, I can remember going on caravan holidays and staying at Goldon Sands which is situated around a mile away from Mablethorpe town. The perfect holiday place which can remember was epic. Anyway, most days we walked the 'good mile' to Mablethorpe town en route stopping for fish and chips along the way.

We parked up at Queens Park where there has been quite a few changes such as now the boating lake. And as a rule, we had fish and chips for our tea as we enjoy the sights of Mablethorpe seafront.

One of the most popular attractions which runs at Mablethorpe is the Sand Train which runs regular trips between seal sanctuary and Mablethorpe town centre. The Sand Train as its known as based on a 1950/60's Land Rover.

A perfect way to wind down the holiday before the long drive back home to Scarborough. Also, we stop of at a beautiful disused railway station en route home.

Mablethorpe Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located on Lincolnshire's east coast, and around 40 miles east of Lincoln, is the town of Mablethorpe.

A market charter was granted to Mablethorpe in 1253 by Henry III. For several centuries it remained a very small town. At the time of the first census in 1801, the population of Mablethorpe was just 164.

The transformation of Mablethorpe into a seaside resort coincided with the opening of a railway station in the town. In 1877 the Louth and East Coast Railway had a terminus here. In Victorian Britain it had become fashionable to take the waters, i.e. go to the seaside, for the natural health benefits that the environment offers. The arrival of the railways made day trips to the seaside possible to those in even the most inland locations.

In 1883 the first lifeboat station was built in Mablethorpe and ran until the First World War, at which point it closed due to crew shortages. In 1965 it reopened as an inshore lifeboat station. A further station opened in 1996.

In 1970 the previously mentioned Mablethorpe railway station was closed as part of the Beeching cuts. Around this period it was deemed that over 2000 railways across the UK were not financially viable due to the increase in road transport. Mablethorpe's was one such station that was forced to close as a result.

The poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson was born in the village of Somersby, around 16 miles away. Growing up, he spent summers in Mablethorpe. It is said that he used to shout his poetry aloud towards the sea. Tennyson Road and Tennyson High School are name after the Poet Laureate.

MABLETHORPE | Tour of Mablethorpe from the town to Mablethorpe Beach | 4K Walk

MABLETHORPE | Tour of Mablethorpe from the town to Mablethorpe Beach
Also watch Skegness 4K Walk along the seafront from Beach to Skegness Pier ????

We take a short virtual walk from Mablethorpe Town Centre up to the amazing Mablethorpe beach and along the seafront and promenade to check out what's happening in Mablethorpe this summer!

Mablethorpe is a seaside holiday town in Lincolnshire on the East Coast of the UK, and is popular with holidaymakers and tourists looking for a day trip or a longer holiday at the seaside.

Mablethorpe hosts a unique beach-hut festival each September. Privately owned beach huts compete in outward design, amidst a backdrop of poetry, music, and drama.

Mablethorpe has long hosted motorbike sand racing each winter and spring. This has inspired the Lincolnshire Bike Week by the local Coastal Events Community Interest Company, following from the successful Mablethorpe and Sutton-on-Sea Bike Nights.

Each summer Mablethorpe hosts an illuminations event (a switch on), for which a celebrity is invited. Those officiating have included Barbara Windsor, Timmy Mallett and Wolf and Hunter of Gladiators.

This popular seaside resort has plenty to see and do for all tastes and ages. Attractions include The Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre, the Lincolnshire Aquapark, the Loewen Cinema, Mablethorpe Fairground, The Dunes Entertainment Complex, Queens Park, Circus and much more both in Mablethorpe and the surrounding area.

Annual events in the summer include the Mablethorpe Bike Night, Illuminations Switch On, Poppies on the Prom and Bathing Beauties Beach Hut Festival.

If you prefer a quieter time you’ll love our Blue Flag Award Winning Beach, local nature reserves and some great coffee shops, cafes and restaurants.

Baby Seals can be seen at the Seal Sanctuary and Donna Nook Nature Reserve in November and December. Autumn is also when the Mablethorpe Marathon is held. This popular event, known as ‘the friendly one’, offers a great opportunity to achieve a person best due to our unusually flat course. It was last run in 2016 and we hope to see it return soon.

On the beach in the winter, there are regular motor cycle sand racing events organised by the Mablethorpe Motor Cycle Sand Racing Club – going strong since 1970.

Mablethorpe is a seaside town in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England, part of the civil parish of Mablethorpe and Sutton (including Sutton On Sea)

Mablethorpe 2021 is going to be fantastic and really busy by the looks of it!

We start our 4K walk on Mablethorpe High Street, passing the amusement arcades, fish and chip shops, cafes, restaurants and the best fudge shop on the East Coast! And don't forget Mablethorpe funfair too on the beach front - fantastic!
