Karnataka Tourism - Top Places Around Bangalore | Chitradurga Fort City | Kallin Kote

Chitradurga Fort is locally known as Elusuttina Kote (meaning the fort of seven circles) and is one of the country’s strongest hill forts. The fort originally had to have had 19 gateways, 38 postern-gates, 35 secret entrances and 4 ‘invisible’ entrances. Many of these have gone out of existence now. The doors were made of strong and thick wooden beams fastened with iron plates. The soaring ramparts are hewn from rock complement the craggy landscape and were designed so that each line of fortification overlooks others below. Zigzagging pathways slowed down enemy soldiers and prevented the use of battering rams. The doors of the main gateways were, in addition, bristling with iron spikes to ward off elephants.

Chitradurga fort is famed for its sophisticated water harvesting system. Interconnected reservoirs collected and stored rainwater, which overflew from each tank flowing into other tanks below it. Such an effective system ensured that the fort never ran out of water. After filling all these
tanks, the water used to flow to the moats round the fort-walls.

Temples in Chitradurga Fort: The fort has numerous temples like the Sampige Siddheshwara, Hidimbeshwara, Ekanathamma, Phalguneshvara, Gopalakrishna, Anjaneya, Subbaraya and Basava. A big piece of bone has been kept in the Hidimbeshwara Temple and is shown as the tooth of the demon Hidambasura, and a cylinder of iron plates, six feet high and ten feet in circumference, as the bheri or kettle-drum of Bhima. A figure of Hidambasura is sculptured on the Vimana. In the Siddheshwara Temple also is kept a piece of bone much larger than that kept in the Hidimbeshvara temple, which also is believed to be as the tooth of Hidambasura.

Onake Obavva Kindi: A must-see in this fort is the Onake Obavvana Kindi, named after a brave woman Obavva. It is connected with the famous attack of Haidar Ali on Chitradurga. Haidar’s forces were unable to enter into the fort, in spite of a long siege. They soon found a small crevice through which they could get into the fort. It was a very narrow crevice, hardly admitting a human being in a kneeling position. Obavva hid there and saw the enemy trying to get inside. Displaying remarkable courage, she grabbed onake (a pestle) and killed each soldier getting inside.

Chitradurga Fort visiting time: Chitradurga Fort is open from 6 AM to 6 PM on all days. Certified guides are available near the entrance who can be hired to give a guided tour and narrate historic importance.

Places to visit near Chitradurga: Vani Vilasa Sagara Dam (60 kms), Davanagere city (62 kms), Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary (135 kms) and Hampi (152 kms) are some of the places that can be included as an extension of your trip to Chitradurga.

How to reach Chitradurga: Chitradurga is 200 kms from Bengaluru. Vidyanagar airport in Bellary is the closest (140 kms) but Bengaluru airport (225 kms) is the better choice because of the higher number of flights. Chitradurga has a train station and excellent bus connectivity from Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka. Chitradurga Fort is less than 2 kms from the city centre.

Places to stay near Chitradurga: KSTDC runs budget Hotel Mayura Durg in Chitradurga. Additional budget and mid-range hotels are available in Chitradurga town.

Chitradurga Fort with Guide Forts of Karnataka Tourism Chitradurga tourism India ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗ ಕೋಟೆ

ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗ ಕೋಟೆ Chitradurga Fort with Guide Forts of Karnataka Tourism Chitradurga tourism. Chitradurga Fort or as the British called it Chitaldoorg, is a fortification that straddles several hills and a peak overlooking a flat valley in the Chitradurga District, Karnataka, India. The fort's name Chitrakaldurga, which means 'picturesque fort' in Kannada, is the namesake of the town Chitradurga and its administrative district.

The fort was built in stages between the 11th and 13th centuries by the dynastic rulers of the region including the Chalukyas and Hoysalas, later the Nayakas of Chitradurga of the Vijayanagar Empire. The Nayakas of Chitradurga, or Palegar Nayakas, were most responsible for the expansion of the fort between the 15th and 18th centuries. The fort was taken over for a short while by Hyder Ali at Chitradurga in 1779. The fort was captured by the British forces twenty years later, when they defeated his son Tipu Sultan. The fort is built in a series of seven concentric fortification walls with various passages, a citadel, masjid, warehouses for grains and oil, water reservoirs and ancient temples. There are 18 temples in the upper fort and one huge temple in the lower fort. Among these temples, the oldest and most interesting is the Hidimbeshwara temple. The masjid was an addition during Hyder Ali's rule. The fort's many interconnecting tanks were used to harvest rainwater, and the fort was said to never suffer from a water shortage.
Chitradurga is formed of two words in the Kannada language: ‘Chitra’ means picture and ‘Durga’ means fort and is tagged with the English word ‘fort’ to form the name Chitradurga Fort. It is also locally known as Kallina Kote or Stone Fortress, which is also formed of two Kannada words ‘Kallina’: Stone and Kote: Fort. Other names used in Kannada are ‘Ukkina Kote: Steel Fort (metaphorically used to mean an impregnable fort) and ‘Yelusuttina Kote’: Seven Circles Fort.
However, the area where the fort now exists achieved prominence only under the dynastic rule of the Nayakas of Chitradurga or Paleygars (called little kings) as a feudatory of the Vijayanagar Empire.
Between 1500 AD and 1800 AD, Chitradurga Fort witnessed a turbulent history starting with the Vijayanagar Empire; the empire had gained control of this region from the Hoysalas. Vijayanagar rulers brought the Nayakas, the traditional local chieftains of the area, under their control as their feudatory, until their dynastic reign ended in 1565 A.D. Thereafter, the Nayakas of Chitradurga took independent control of the region and their clan ruled for more than 200 years until the last of their rulers, Madakari Nayaka V, was defeated by Hyder Ali of Mysore Kingdom, in 1779.

Timmana Nayaka or Thimmappa Nayaka, a chieftain from Matti during the rule of Saluva Narasimha, was the first ruler in the hierarchy of the Nayakas of Chitradurga. Initially, he was a chieftain under the Vijayanagar Empire but was soon elevated to the rank of Governor of Chitradurga by the Vijayanagar ruler . His rule lasted for a brief period and ended with his incarceration and death as a prisoner of the Vijaynagar Empire. His son Obana Nayaka or Madakari Nayaka (1588–1602) succeeded him.

Madakari Nayaka V was the final ruler of the clan from 1758 to 1779. It was during his reign that the city of Chitradurga and the fort were besieged by the troops of Hyder Ali. Madakari Nayaka used the fort effectively for defense during three battles against Hyder Ali, at times allying himself with Hyder Ali of Mysore Kingdom and at others with the Marathas. Hyder Ali attacked the Chitradurga Fort the first time in 1760, the second time in 1770 and the third time successfully in 1779 when he defeated Madakari Nayaka. Nayaka was taken a prisoner and killed. Nayaka's gamble of playing with both Hyder Ali and the Marathas was not successful; he was betrayed by the Marathas and some local Muhammadan officers in his service. Subsequent to his death the treasury at the fort is said to have yielded a rich bounty. It was during one such war that the heroics of Onake Obavva, the wife of a soldier guarding the fort, became a legendary event.

The Nayak Palegars built the fort as an impregnable fortification for defense purposes with 19 gateways, 38 posterior entrances, 35 secret entrances, four invisible passages, water tanks and 2000 watch towers to guard and keep vigil on the enemy incursions. The storage warehouses, pits, and reservoirs were primarily designed to ensure the food, water and military supplies required to endure a long siege. . Seven walls (called Yelusuttinakote in local language) form the fort.Eighteen temples were built in the upper fort. Some of the well-known temples were the Hidimbeswara , Sampige Siddeshwara, Ekanathamma, Phalguneshwara, Gopala Krishna, Lord Hanuman, Subbaraya and Nandi.

Top 10 Best Tourist Places to Visit in Davanagere | India - English

Located in the center of the Indian state of Karnataka, Davanagere is the perfect vacation spot for those looking to explore the Western Ghats. It is an important commercial and political city of Karnataka. People refer to it as “The Manchester of Karnataka” because of its famous cotton-producing factories. The word Davanagere is a portmanteau of the words “Danavina” and “Kere,” which together translate to “a lake for the thirsty”. The small lakes of Davanagere are some of the best places to visit in Davanagereand the rest of Karnataka.

The history of this quaint town is unknown to most people. Fables claim that soldiers of the Chalukya Dynasty came here to quench their thirst after a tiring day of horse-riding, naming this place Davangere. During the rule of Nizam Haider Ali, a local Muslim ruler of the region, this city flourished as a business capital. Haider Ali gifted Davangere to Apoji Ram, a Marathi king. This furthered business and cotton production in the region. Even today, you will see the entire city dotted with textile mills and handlooms.

Top 10 Best Hotels to Visit in Davanagere | India - English

#DavanagereHotels
Davanagere is famous for its well-known delicacy benne dose or benne dosa. Most people in Karnataka know about Davanagere through this dish! Folklore says that the city of Davanagere or Davangere was founded when one of the Chalukya rulers made a pitstop here while on his journey.

The king and his army were so thirsty and tired that they had to dig a lake to extract water. Thus, the region came to be known as Danivina Kere meaning “lake for the thirsty folk”. Later, the name changed into Davanagere. However, there is no lake or historical records to prove it.

Some years ago, Davanagere was popular as the Manchester of India because of the flourishing cotton industries. Later, cotton industries saw a decline in the city. Still, Davanagere is a centre for agricultural products. Today, Davanagere is one of the interesting cities with several educational institutions. It has turned out to be an educational hub consisting of medical and dental colleges.

Chitradurga Fort Malayalam || Best Place to visit in Karnataka || Best Fort in South India Ep#4

The fort was built in stages between the 11th and 13th centuries by the dynastic rulers of the region including the Chalukyas and Hoysalas, later the Nayakas of Chitradurga of the Vijayanagar Empire.[5] The Nayakas of Chitradurga, or Palegar Nayakas, were most responsible for the expansion of the fort between the 15th and 18th centuries. The fort was taken over for a short while by Hyder Ali at Chitradurga in 1779. There are 18 temples in the upper fort and one huge temple in the lower fort. Among these temples, the oldest and most interesting is the Hidimbeshwara temple. The masjid was an addition during Hyder Ali's rule.[2][3][4] The fort's many interconnecting tanks were used to harvest rainwater, and the fort was said to never suffer from a water shortage

Legents:

Folk legend links the hills surrounding the fort to the epic Mahabharata. It is said that a man-eating giant named Hidimbasura lived on the Chitradurga hill and had terrorized everyone around. When the Pandavas came with their mother Kunti in the course of their exile, Bhima had a duel with Hidimba. Hidimba was slain by Bhima and peace returned to the area. Legend further states that the boulders were part of the arsenal used during that duel.

You must pay online. Then we hired guide for Rs.300/-.  If you are going to explore Chitradurga you must spend at least a whole day. Must take water bottle with you, wearing sports shoes is better.. Chitradurga Fort is awesome place for trekking and sight seeing.
Some of the well-known temples in the fort are the Monolithic ShriGanesha, Hidimbeswara, Sampige Siddeshwara, Ekanathamma and Phalguneshwara.
As today is Friday there is huge rush for Eknathamma darshan.
You can see a monolithic pillar and two swing frames at the gate of the temple.
The Chitradurga Fort is spread across 1500 acres and  firstly known as Chitrakaladurg, it is a stone fort  made of heavy blocks of granite.
According to Wikipedia, it has several concentric walls, multiple entrances, four unseen passages, and thirty-five secret paths. In addition to all these features, the fort also has 2000 watchtowers.
As per historical records, Chitradurga Fort has witnessed several attacks from inimical forces.
The fort was built between the 11th and 13th centuries and was expanded between the 15th and 18th centuries by the Nayakas of Chitradurga.

While coming down from the fort we meet monkey King Jyotiraj.  On our request  one of his student climbed the plane wall of fort within 5 seconds without any support, which was really amazing and unbelievable.

Tasting Davanagere’s Most Popular MIRCHI MANDAKKI At SUBBANNA MIRCHI MASALA!

Hi folks, kicking off our North Karnataka series with this short and spicy episode that we filmed impromptu enroute to Hubli. Stopping at Davanagere, a city popularly known as Benne Nagari (the land of butter) to taste an iconic benne dosae, we were told that a visit here would be considered incomplete without tasting the crowd-pleasing evening snack of mirchi mandakki. Especially the one dished out at Subbanna Mirchi Masala, a tiny shop that has stood the test of time for over seven decades now. I catch up with the locals, and also the friendly owners, brothers, Subbanna and Srikanth, whose grandfather began the Subbanna mirchi mandakki tradition! Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!
