Places to see in ( Hyde - UK )

Places to see in ( Hyde - UK )

Hyde is a town in Greater Manchester, England. Historically in Cheshire, it is 5 miles northeast of Stockport, 6 miles west of Glossop and 7 miles east of Manchester. The population of Hyde increased due to the success of the cotton mills during the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, at one stage there were 40 working mills. By 1872 only 27 remained, half of the remaining mills closed between 1921 and 1939 and there is only one working mill in the town today. There were many mill owning families, including the Sidebotham, Hibbert and Horsfield families.

St George's Church was built in 1832 as a chapel of ease to St Mary's, Stockport. It was built at the instigation of John Hyde Clarke of Hyde Hall and was the first Church of England place of worship in the town. St George's became the parish church of part of Hyde township in 1842. Later additions include the lychgate, boathouse by the canal, hearse house, parish rooms and numerous vicarages. The church has a 110-foot (34 m) tower housing eight bells and a clock.

The Peak Forest Canal was constructed through Hyde from Ashton-under-Lyne to Woodley, Romiley and Marple. Captain Clarke's Bridge, originally named Wood End Canal Bridge is situated at the end of Woodend Lane. The bridge was erected before Captain Clarke rose to prominence and therefore probably became known as Captain Clarke's Bridge after he retired and resided there.

Hyde was incorporated as a municipal borough of Cheshire in 1881, which covered the parishes of Hyde, Godley and Newton, along with part of Compstall. Hyde Town Hall dominates the market place area. The large bell in the clocktower is known as Owd Joss (Old Josh), named after Joshua Bradley, a former poor child worker in the mills. The clock chimes the Westminster Quarters.

Werneth Low Country Park is the location of the Hyde War Memorial. The memorial is owned by a trust which raised funds from Hyde residents after the Great War to create a permanent memorial to those Hyde residents who died in that conflict. The memorial contains 710 names. Hyde is separated from Denton by the River Tame, a tributary of the River Mersey. There are several areas and suburbs in Hyde, these include, Gee Cross, Newton, Hattersley, Godley, Flowery Field, Kingston, Mottram in Longdendale, Hollingworth and Broadbottom.

Hyde is served by six railway stations, Hyde Central and Hyde North stations are on the Manchester Piccadilly - Romiley - Rose Hill 'Hyde Loop' line. Flowery Field, Newton (for Hyde), Godley and Hattersley stations are on the electrified Piccadilly - Glossop - Hadfield line. Hyde is served by the M67 motorway, a feeder to the M60, the orbital motorway for Manchester, which is connected to many other motorways that serve across the country. Hyde also has Hyde bus station, with services into Manchester and other surrounding areas, including Stockport, Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham.

( Hyde - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Hyde . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Hyde - UK

Crowden, Laddow Rocks & Chew Reservoir - Peak District #quietwalks #hiking #4k #countryside #walking

Crowden Valley is one of my old favourite places to walk, there are so many ways to wander off from the car park by the road. There are even historic sites nearby and apparent paranormal occurrences around the tops of these hills! Well unfortunately on this occasion this won't be a supernatural tour of the area, but instead a fairly straightforward; albeit incredibly scenic, route to one of Longdendale valley's most famous landmarks, and beyond to Saddleworth!
Starting from Crowden car park we'll be walking parallel to the river (Crowden Great Brook) gradually uphill to Laddow Rocks. From there we'll be cutting into the moorland, west, to Chew Reservoir. Where we'll just about cross from the High Peak in Derbyshire to Saddleworth Moor. That will bring us to an end for this journey.

Chapters:
0:00 - Walk begins at Crowden Car Park
2:49 - Fork in path for our route or Loftend Quarry
5:09 - First decent view point
8:51 - View across Bareholme Moss
13:58 - View up Crowden Great Brook Valley
16:36 - Break for a great view
18:36 - Rakes Rocks & Laddow Rocks view

31:19 - Layered scenery at Bareholme Moss rocks
33:08 - Scenic valley view
34:13 - Walking up Oakenclough & Brook break
39:07 - Panoramic sweep across valley

Mam Tor [4K] 2022 | Peak District Walk | Castleton Derbyshire |

Mam Tor is a 517 m (1,696 ft) hill near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England. Its name means mother hill, so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of mini-hills beneath it. These landslips, which are caused by unstable lower layers of shale, also give the hill its alternative name of Shivering Mountain.

In 1979, the continual battle to maintain the A625 road (Sheffield to Chapel en le Frith) on the crumbling eastern side of the hill was lost when the road officially closed as a through-route, with the Fox House to Castleton section of the road being re-designated as the A6187.

The hill is crowned by a late Bronze Age and early Iron Age univallate hill fort, and two Bronze Age bowl barrows. At the base of the Tor and nearby are four show caves: Blue John Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Peak Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern where lead, Blue John, fluorspar and other minerals were once mined. Mam Tor was declared to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Peak by Thomas Hobbes in his 1636 book De Mirabilibus Pecci.

Simon Jenkins rates the panorama from Kinder Scout to Stanage Edge as one of the top ten in England.

Mam Tor is on the southern edge of the Dark Peak (sandstones) and overlooks the White Peak (limestones), including the dry gorge of Winnats Pass. It is a dominating link between the eastern end of Rushup Edge and the western end of the Great Ridge, which together separate the Hope Valley to the south from Edale to the north, and is a popular ridgewalk.

Mam Tor is made of rocks of Carboniferous age, approximately 320 million years old. The base of Mam Tor is composed of black shales of the Bowland Shale Formation of Serpukhovian age overlain by turbiditic sandstone of the Mam Tor Sandstone Formation of Bashkirian age.

A feature of Mam Tor is the active landslide which invades its southeast side almost to the summit, and interrupts the ramparts of the hillfort, unless its builders used it as part of the defences. This rotational landslide began roughly 4,000 years ago. The toe is a debris flow. The landslide is due to weak shales underlying sandstones, a common phenomenon all around the Dark Peak, notably at Alport Castles, Longdendale, Glossop and Canyards Hills, Sheffield. Indeed, three larger landslides occur on the north side of Mam Tor, one of them cutting the main ridge at Mam Nick which allows a minor road over into Edale; another creates the striking crag of Back Tor well seen from Mam Tor.

Evidence for the continued movement of the slide mass is demonstrated graphically by the severe damage to the old Mam Tor road that traversed this flow. The road was built at the beginning of the 1800s and was subsequently relaid until local authorities closed it in 1979. Layers of tarmac and gravel are up to 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) thick in places, demonstrating the numerous efforts to keep the road open. A short tunnel could readily have been made avoiding the landslip zone, but the opportunity to exclude heavy business and lorry traffic from the middle of the National Park was preferred. A local diversion for light vehicles follows the limestone gorge of Winnats Pass. This is one of the most extreme cases of geological problems affecting main transport systems in Britain, comparable with the railway at Dawlish.

Current mean annual movement is up to 0.25 m; this increases greatly when winter rainfalls exceed thresholds of both 210 mm/month and 750 mm in the preceding six months. The debris flow poses no threat to any inhabited buildings; however, small farm buildings lying in the flow's path may soon be overwhelmed assuming a flow rate similar to that of the present. The 2000 study suggests that deep drainage may be the most effective means of stabilising the flow, though this may not completely stop movement.

The summit of Mam Tor is encircled by a late Bronze Age and early Iron Age univallate hill fort. Radiocarbon analysis suggests occupation from around 1200 BC. The earliest remaining features are two Bronze Age burial mounds, one just below the summit and the other on the summit itself, though now buried under the paving. At a later stage over a hundred small platforms were levelled into the hill near the summit, allowing inhabited timber huts to be constructed. The hill fort and burial mounds are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

DUNFORD: Barnsley Parish #9 of 17

In much the same way as we saw in Langsett, to the West of Barnsley the landscape turns into a much more hilly affair the further you go, although for today's parish, we are definitely not in anywhere that can be described as The Dark Peak. Even though they border each other, Langsett is wildly different to this place.

That's primarily because the hills are much sharper, steep gradients that challenge you when walking and when driving, and if you got onto the Trans Pennine Trail at this point, you'd be needing a good strong pair of hiking boots and real sense of adventure.

The trail is perhaps one of the things that we've seen most of so far on the channel, as it winds it's way through so many of South Yorkshire's parishes. Here though, this is a place where you can pick up the trail and park your car in an actual designated car park, rather than just on the side of a road somewhere.

The hills around here mean some features we see are much different to the norm too. How about the Woodhead Tunnel for example, built to carry railway locomotives in the 1800's underneath the very backbone of the British Isles? it was one of many along this now disused railway line. Then there's the reservoirs, and one very large one in particular is located in these hills - Winscar - providing water to the surrounding communities in both South and West Yorkshire. We're only scratching the surface even then, because there's an abundance of small hamlets here as well, like Carlecotes.

Unmistakeable Peak District scenery and all it has to offer is what you'll find in Barnsley's far North West. This is DUNFORD.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the borough of Barnsley. There are 17. Here's the NINTH one - Dunford.

I was in Sheffield recently. Decided to explore the famous Peak District Area that was not too far from Endcliffe Village where I was staying. It was an afternoon that was well spent.
