Much of the city's medieval architecture remains intact and is remarkably well preserved and restored. Its centre is the largest carfree area in Belgium. Highlights are the Saint Bavo Cathedral with the Ghent Altarpiece, the belfry, the Gravensteen castle, and the splendid architecture along the old Graslei harbour. Ghent has established a blend between comfort of living and history; it is not a city-museum. The city of Ghent also houses three béguinages and numerous churches including Saint-Jacob's church, Saint-Nicolas' church, Saint Michael's church and St. Stefanus.
In the 19th century Ghent's most famous architect, Louis Roelandt, built the university hall Aula, the opera house and the main courthouse. Highlights of modern architecture are the university buildings (the Boekentoren or Book Tower) by Henry Van de Velde. There are also a few theatres from diverse periods.
The beguinages, as well as the belfry and adjacent cloth hall, were recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 1998 and 1999.

Restaurants and culinary traditions[edit]
In Ghent and other regions of East-Flanders, bakeries sell a donut-shaped bun called a mastel (plural mastellen), which is basically a bagel. Mastellen are also called Saint Hubert bread, because on the Saint's feast day, which is 3 November, the bakers bring their batches to the early Mass to be blessed. Traditionally, it was thought that blessed mastellen immunized against rabies.
Ghent has the world's largest number of vegetarian restaurants per capita.[13]

The city is host to some big cultural events such as the Gentse Feesten, I Love Techno in Flanders Expo, the 10 Days Off musical festival, the International Film Festival of Ghent (with the World Soundtrack Awards) and the Gent Festival van Vlaanderen (nl).

Most notably, Ghent boasts a nature reserve (Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen, 230 hectare[14]) and a recreation park (Blaarmeersen, 87 hectares)
Op wandel door Brussel
Vandaag (10 januari 2020) namen we de bus naar Brussel. Na een uurtje op de bus te hebben doorgebracht kwamen we eindelijk aan in Brussel.
Brussel is de hoofdstad van België, van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, de Franse Gemeenschap en het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest. Is de moeite om eens gaan te bezoeken.

Leuven: bierhoofdstad van België 30-12-2019
De stad Leuven ligt centraal in België, in de provincie Vlaams-Brabant. Leuven is met ongeveer honderdduizend inwoners een middelgrote stad in België. Het ligt op ruim dertig kilometer van de Belgische hoofdstad Brussel. Leuven heeft de bijnaam ‘Bierhoofdstad van België”. Deze naam is gebaseerd op een tweetal elementen: de aanwezigheid van de Artois-brouwerij (tegenwoordig Anheuser-Busch InBev) en de vele studenten die in Leuven studeren aan de KU Leuven of andere scholen. Het bier vloeit rijkelijk binnen het studentenleven. Vooral op de Oude Markt worden er wekelijks heel wat glaasjes Stella Artois en andere bieren weggetapt. Als bezoeker kom je terecht in een dynamische, jonge stad waar altijd wel iets te beleven valt. Diverse festivals, feesten en andere evenementen staan op de jaarlijkse kalender. In de zomermaanden vallen deze samen onder Het Groot Verlof. Als er niets georganiseerd wordt kun je in Leuven heerlijk winkelen, genieten van heerlijke spijzen en dranken, fietstochten maken of de bezienswaardigheden van de stad ontdekken. Niet voor niets dat Leuven steevast een hoge positie heeft in de top 10 van best bezochte Belgische steden.

The city of Leuven is centrally located in Belgium, in the province of Flemish Brabant. Leuven is a medium-sized city in Belgium with about one hundred thousand inhabitants. It is located over thirty kilometers from the Belgian capital, Brussels. Leuven has the nickname Beer Capital of Belgium. This name is based on two elements: the presence of the Artois brewery (now Anheuser-Busch InBev) and the many students who study in Leuven at the KU Leuven or other schools. Beer flows abundantly within student life. Especially at the Oude Markt, many glasses of Stella Artois and other beers are tapped away every week. As a visitor, you find yourself in a dynamic, young city where there is always something going on. Various festivals, parties and other events are on the annual calendar. In the summer months, these come together under the umbrella of the Great Holiday. If nothing is being organized, Leuven is a great place to store, enjoy delicious food and drink, go cycling or discover the sights of the city. Op wandel langs de velden van Steenhuffel
Vandaag vertrekt onze wandeling aan eetcafé de Grens, die ligt op de grens met Malderen, Steenhuffel en Buggenhout , daarna trokken we langs de mooie natuur en velden van Steenhuffel. Steenhuffel is een dorp in de Belgische provincie Vlaams-Brabant. Het is net als Malderen een deelgemeente van Londerzeel.

Mechelen is een stad in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen. Mechelen ligt pal tussen (en dichtbij) Antwerpen en Brussel,aan de rivier de Dijle en is dus ideaal als uitvalsbasis voor allebei: 20 minuten sporen en je bent er. De stad heeft een lange geschiedenis, maar heeft veel meer te bieden dan alleen traditie. De Financial Times noemde Mechelen een van de 10 Europese steden van de toekomst. Die eer hebben we te danken aan onze vele jonge, goed opgeleide inwoners. En wist je dat er gratis wifi is voor iedereen? Overal!

Liège-Guillemins railway station is the main station of the city of Liège, the third largest city in Belgium. It is one of the most important hubs in the country and is one of the 4 Belgian stations on the high-speed rail network.
The first railway station of Liège-Guillemins was inaugurated in May 1842, linking the valley to the upper Ans station. In 1843, the first international railway connection was born, linking Liège to Aachen and Cologne.
The station was modernised and improved in 1882 and in 1905 for the World's Fair in Liège. This Beaux-Arts station was replaced in 1958 by a modern International style building that was used until June 2009, a few months before the opening of the new Calatrava-designed station. Merchtem Peizegem I vertrek tractorparade
2de Verlichte Tractorparade door Groot-Merchtem
Vandaag, op 10 december 2022 trok voor de tweede maal een verlichte tractorparade door de straten van Groot-Merchtem. Start om 18:00 u in Peizegem - Leireken. Aankomst voorzien rond 21u aan de Feestzaal-Brussegem . Het was de moeite waard. Wij gingen een kijkje nemen bij voor en bij het vertrek.

2nd Illuminated Tractor Parade through Groot-Merchtem
Today, on 10 December 2022 an illuminated tractor parade passed through the streets of Groot-Merchtem for the second time. Start at 6pm in Peizegem - Leireken. Arrival scheduled around 21h at the Feestzaal-Brussegem . It was worth the effort. We went to have a look at before and at departure.

Vandaag, op 10 december 2022 trok voor de tweede maal een verlichte tractorparade door de straten van Groot-Merchtem. Start om 18:00 u in Peizegem - Leireken. Aankomst voorzien rond 21u aan de Feestzaal-Brussegem . Het was de moeite waard. Wij gingen een kijkje nemen bij voor en bij het vertrek.

Today, on 10 December 2022 an illuminated tractor parade passed through the streets of Groot-Merchtem for the second time. Start at 6pm in Peizegem - Leireken. Arrival scheduled around 21h at the Feestzaal-Brussegem . It was worth the effort. We went to have a look at before and at departure.

Dendermonde is een stad in de Belgische provincie Oost-Vlaanderen. De stad ligt in de driehoek Gent-Brussel-Antwerpen, een van de meest verstedelijkte gebieden van het land. Het is de hoofdplaats van het arrondissement Dendermonde en ligt in de Denderstreek. Alle 10 jaar gaat het Ros Beiaard uit in deze stad. In 2020 is het spijtig genoeg niet kunnen doorgaan door de Coronacrisis.

Deze morgen een bezoek gebracht aan de jaarmarkt van Londerzeel. Toen we daar toekwamen was het nog stil, maar toen we vertrokken zaten de terrassen vol en was er veel volk op de been. Het was van voor de Corona geleden dat we er nog naar toe geweest waren.

Eng: This morning we visited Londerzeel's annual fair. When we got there it was still quiet, but when we left the terraces were full and there were lots of people on their feet. It had been since before the Corona that we had been there.
