This industrial city in West Flanders came through a revival in the 19th century with the completion of the Roeselare-Leie Canal.
In the decades that followed, Roeselare would be described as the Manchester of Belgium, and has a port on the canal still bustling with activity.
In 1875 a young Albrecht Rodenbach, who later became an important poet, led a protest against the use of French in education at the city’s Klein Seminarie (minor seminary), spearheading the Flemish Groote Stooringe student revolt.
This was a big step in the “Dutchization” of Flemish secondary education.

De stad Leuven ligt centraal in België, in de provincie Vlaams-Brabant. Leuven is met ongeveer honderdduizend inwoners een middelgrote stad in België. Het ligt op ruim dertig kilometer van de Belgische hoofdstad Brussel. Leuven heeft de bijnaam ‘Bierhoofdstad van België”. Deze naam is gebaseerd op een tweetal elementen: de aanwezigheid van de Artois-brouwerij (tegenwoordig Anheuser-Busch InBev) en de vele studenten die in Leuven studeren aan de KU Leuven of andere scholen. Het bier vloeit rijkelijk binnen het studentenleven. Vooral op de Oude Markt worden er wekelijks heel wat glaasjes Stella Artois en andere bieren weggetapt. Als bezoeker kom je terecht in een dynamische, jonge stad waar altijd wel iets te beleven valt. Diverse festivals, feesten en andere evenementen staan op de jaarlijkse kalender. In de zomermaanden vallen deze samen onder Het Groot Verlof. Als er niets georganiseerd wordt kun je in Leuven heerlijk winkelen, genieten van heerlijke spijzen en dranken, fietstochten maken of de bezienswaardigheden van de stad ontdekken. Niet voor niets dat Leuven steevast een hoge positie heeft in de top 10 van best bezochte Belgische steden.

Lokeren Belgica
Los descubrimientos arqueológicos en la zona de Lokeren demuestran que el área ha estado habitada desde el período Neolítico. En tiempos del Imperio romano una de sus rutas discurría a lo largo del río Durme y fueron los romanos quienes bautizaron a la región con el nombre de Waasland, que deriva de la raíz germánica Wasu que significa “tierra pantanosa”. Sin embargo, la mención más temprana del nombre Lokeren data de 1114. A diferencia de los asentamientos anteriores, la nueva aldea se desarrolló en la margen derecha del río Durme. A mediados del siglo XII ya era una localidad parroquial independiente siendo sus principales actividades económicas la agricultura y el lino. La industria textil fue un importante factor de desarrollo para la ciudad hasta mediados del siglo XX.
En 1555, Carlos V le otorgó al pueblo de Lokeren el derecho a establecer un mercado. Durante el siglo XVI y el siglo XVII, toda la región de Waasland quedó en la línea de fuego entre las tropas protestantes de Holanda y las filas católicas de España, lo que ocasionó frecuentemente consecuencias terribles para la población local. Después de la Revolución francesa, la región se convirtió en parte del nuevo Departamento del Escalda y Lokeren fue la cabecera de uno de los cantones. Esto no duró mucho tiempo dado que el departamento fue dividido en 1800 y Lokeren se convirtió en parte del distrito de Dendermonde. Napoleón Bonaparte promovió al pueblo otorgándole la categoría de ciudad en 1804. Kayak trip on the Zuidlede River, on a beautiful autumn day.
Starting at Stenenbrug, Puyenbroeck, I paddle to the east. After a while I come to a transfer point at Triphon restaurant, Eksaardedam. Then the tour continues through Eksaarde, where the river narrows and there is overhanging vegetation. The kayak tour ends at a dam, near the Spletterenbrug, Lokeren. There's also a video with a part of the return paddle trip, at Sunset :
Kajaktocht over de Zuidlede, op een mooie herfstdag.
Oostwaarts vanaf Stenenbrug, Puyenbroeck, peddel ik vooral door de natuur. Na een tijdje kom ik aan een overstappunt bij restaurant Triphon, Eksaardedam. Daarna gaat de tocht verder door het centrum van Eksaarde, waar de rivier versmalt en er overhangende vegetatie is. De kajaktocht eindigt bij een stuwdam, ter hoogte van de Spletterenbrug, Lokeren. Ensuite, la visite se poursuit à travers le centre d'Eksaarde, où la rivière se rétrécit et la végétation en surplomb. Le tour en kayak se termine à un barrage près du Spletterenbrug, Lokeren.
