Places to see in ( Kinross - UK )

Kinross is a burgh in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. It was originally the county town of Kinross-shire. The site of the original parish church and churchyard are located down a small wynd overlooking Loch Leven, a little away from the town.

Kinross was originally linked by railway to Perthshire, Fife and Clackmannanshire until the rail links gradually disappeared. At one time three independent railway companies had their termini at the town. The Fife and Kinross Railway came from the east, the Kinross-shire Railway came from the south and The Devon Valley Railway came from the west. Recently Kinross has expanded considerably, especially since the construction of the M90 motorway - the main north-south artery which bypasses the town. Many people working within a commuting radius of Kinross have settled in the town owing to its convenient central location and excellent local amenities. Loch Leven is also a popular holiday base for tourists, who especially appreciate its proximity to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Perth and St Andrews (all lying within an hour's drive of Kinross).

The burgh is attractively located on the shores of Loch Leven, and there are boat trips around the loch and to Loch Leven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was famously held prisoner in 1567. There are roughly 4000-5000 people living in Kinross. The vast majority of children living in Kinross will attend Kinross High School, with the others also possibly attending local private schools such as Dollar Academy.

Kinross was also the home of Flight Sergeant George Thompson whose posthumous Victoria Cross in 1945 is often cited as the best merited of the entire air war. He was the wireless operator in a Lancaster of No. 9 Squadron on a dawn raid against the Dortmund-Ems Canal when the plane was struck by a salvo of two 88mm shells.

Kinross offers many opportunities for getting out and being active, with countless options for walking and cycling in the local area. A recently developed path called the Loch Leven Trails has been developed which offers 12.5 km of walking and cycling heritage trail around the shoreline of Loch Leven. It begins at RSPB Vane Farm Nature Reserve via Findatie to Kinross Pier/Kirkgate Park. The local leisure centre in Kinross - Loch Leven Leisure also opportunities for all ages and abilities to stay active all year round. Kinross also has 3 amateur football teams. Kinross AFC who currently play in the Fife Kingdom Caledonian Football League. Fossoway AFC who play in the Fife 1st division and Portmoak AFC who play in the Perthshire 3rd division.

Spring Road Trip Drive To Visit Cowdenbeath West Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland Spring travel video of an April road trip drive, with Scottish bagpipes and drums music, to visit Cowdenbeath in West Fife. The town of Cowdenbeath grew up around the extensive coalfields of the area and became a Police Burgh in 1890. It is alleged that the infamous graverobbers Burke and Hare sourced some of their cadavers from local cemetery, to supply to the Scottish surgeon Robert Knox for dissection. When the actual name of Cowdenbeath came into being is not known, but it is thought to have originated when turnpike roads were first made and that it marked the spot of an inn and later of a tollhouse erected in the 17th century. Cowdenbeath first came into prominence around 1820 as a stop on the north bound coaching route to Perth, Perthshire.

The surname Beath was first found in Fife, at the Hill of Beath, a hill and a village in Fife, Scotland just outside Dunfermline and joined to Cowdenbeath. The village is best known as the location of the meeting of the Covenanters at which John Blackadder was one of the preachers in the summer of 1670. As of 1896, it had a population of about 1,300 people. Beath has been spelled Beath, Beeth, Beith, Bait, Baith and others. Robert Beath, aged 25, arrived in South Australia in 1852 aboard the ship Medina; Andrew Beath, born 1829, aged 45, was a Scottish agricultural labourer, from Fife who travelled from Glasgow aboard the ship Oamaru arriving in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, South Island, New Zealand on 17th February 1875; William Beath landed in Virginia, America, in 1713; Adam Beath landed in Charlestown, Massachusetts, America, in 1716; Walter Beath arrived in New England, America, in 1718; Robert Beath settled in Charleston, South Carolina, America, in 1766; Henry and Robert Beath arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, America, in 1830.

Coronavirus travel restrictions have now been eased in Scotland, it is now possible to travel out of your local area for non essential reasons.

Lochgelly Cemetery Scotland

The town is built on a hill with a ridge six hundred feet above sea level separating it from the loch. The principal superior is the Earl of Minto with some of the town actually in Ballingry parish owned by the Earl of Zetland.

KEELBY: West Lindsey Parish #11 of 128

West Lindsey is a big district! It stretches from Newton on Trent in the South West where it touches Dunham Bridge, to the outskirts of Grimsby to the North East, within sight of the major port of Immingham. There is no wonder that it has 128 parishes. As a West Lindsey boy though, I do feel right at home wherever I land myself in the district, and despite never coming to this one before, home feels like home!

This one was filmed after a day out with the family in Cleethorpes, and whilst they sampled the delights of one of the village watering holes, I had a walk around this lovely corner of West Lindsey.

What I found was astonishing. You will never have seen a village hall quite like this one, that is for sure, and whilst the village may be relatively small and generally residential, it packs a lot in. There's some hidden away stuff too, like the pond which has been filled in at one of the junctions.

The 2007 floods are commemorated in tje cemetery, there's more than a few local amenities, and generally a happy, Northern Lincolnshire vibe to this dormitory village. A lot of the residents here are expats from other places, mainly Yorkshire or other Lincolnshire villages, but everyone seems welcoming...although us Lincs folk generally are, right?

Loved every minute of this one and hopefully you will too. This is KEELBY.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in West Lindsey. There are 128. Here's the ELEVENTH one – Keelby.

Winter Snow Road Trip Drive To Visit Newburgh In North Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video of a Winter snow road trip drive East on the A913 road, with Scottish bagpipes and drums music, from Abernethy in Perthshire, to where the Lindores Abbey Whisky Distillery is located on Abbey Road on visit to Newburgh in North Fife. The distillery is closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The earliest record of scotch whisky cited by the exchequer roll for 1494 is a commission from King James IV to Friar John Cor of Lindores Abbey to make about eight bols of malt or 580 kg of aquavitae. The abbey is now the location of Lindores Abbey distillery. Newburgh was on the route from important parts of central Scotland, including Perth and Scone, to St Andrews, a key religious centre in Scottish history. In 1266 Newburgh was granted burgh status by King Alexander III of Scotland, as a burgh belonging to the Abbot of Lindores. In 1600, Newburgh was given to Patrick Leslie, son of the Earl of Rothes, a powerful Scottish family, and in 1631, Newburgh was made a Royal Burgh by King Charles I. At its peak, there were several hundred handlooms in Newburgh, before power looms brought an end to handloom weaving. Weaving memories survive through such a name as Shuttlefield, a street off the western end of the High Street. The linen cloth produced in Newburgh was of very good quality and would have been shipped for trade by merchants using the River Tay. Robert Hunter, the lead editor of the Encyclopædic Dictionary, which he produced in seven volumes between 1879 and 1888. In addition, he was an ordained minister and missionary for the Free Church of Scotland, and a notable geologist, becoming a Fellow of the Geological Society, was born in Newburgh, Fife in 1823 to John Mackenzie Hunter of Portpatrick, Wigtownshire, an excise officer and Agnes Strickland of Ulverston, Lancashire, England. He was educated at the Grammar School, Aberdeen where he came first in the open exam for university bursaries and thus went to Marischal College at the University of Aberdeen. He studied Latin, Greek, Mathematics and Natural Science, frequently coming first in the exams.

During the coronavirus pandemic I have been a volunteer driver doing some shopping etc; for elderly Scots. From Tuesday 5 January, mainland Scotland moved from Level 4 to a temporary Lockdown. Fresh snow is expected to hit Scotland with the weather forecast anticipating as much as 15cm to fall over a 24 hour period. Stirling, the Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and Glasgow are among the place to potentially see the worst of the conditions.

Old Photographs Of Guardbridge Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Guardbridge, a village in the north east of Fife, on the east coast. It is approximately 3 miles north west of St Andrews, and is situated on the estuary of the River Eden, at the junction of the A91 road between St Andrews and Stirling and the road between Leuchars and the Tay Road Bridge. The village takes its name from a 15th century six arched bridge built by Bishop Henry Wardlaw, who founded the University of St Andrews.n 1873, William Haig and two of his sons formed the Guardbridge Paper Company to find a more profitable use for their Seggie whisky distillery which had been established there since 1810. The mill went into production in 1874. As the mill developed the village grew around it, with new housing and roads to attract and accommodate workers. Before the First World War the labour force reached over 400, reaching a peak of 620 in the late 1950s. The paper mill was previously the main local industry and was operated by Curtis Fine Papers. On July 24, 2008, the mill went into receivership and 180 workers were made redundant. Many locals were employed elsewhere in Fife, Dundee, Edinburgh or even further afield. The building which played host to the mill is now Eden Brewery. David Finlay, the most famous villager from Guardbridge, was the son of of a shepherd George Finlay and his wife Susan Small. He was 22 years old, and a lance corporal in the 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch, Royal Highlanders, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Vross. On 9 May 1915 near Rue du Bois, France, Lance Corporal Finlay led a bombing party of 12 men in the attack until 10 of them had fallen. He then ordered the two survivors to crawl back and he himself went to the assistance of a wounded man and carried him over a distance of 100 yards of fire swept ground into cover, quite regardless of his own safety. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 21 January 1916 and is remembered on the Basra Memorial.
