Soulange Canal - Video Tour - Pointe-des-Cascade - Québec - Canada
The Soulanges Canal is an abandoned shipping canal in Quebec, Canada. It follows the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River between Pointe-des-Cascades and Coteaux-Landing, bypassing the rapids between Lake Saint-Louis and Lake Saint-Francis. In between, it passes through the towns of Les Cèdres and Coteau-du-Lac. It superseded the first Beauharnois Canal which was on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence. It is 23 kilometers (14 mi) long and had a 4.3-meter (14.1 ft) draught. Five locks measuring 85.3 m × 14 m (279.9 ft × 45.9 ft) give a total rise of 25 meters (82 ft).
The Soulanges Canal was named after the Soulanges Seigneury which was granted in 1702 by Governor Louis-Hector de Callière to Pierre-Jacques de Joybert, Knight and Lord of Soulanges.
Operation of the Soulanges Canal was powered by a small hydro electric generating station. Le Petit Pouvoir is located near the middle of the canal and provided power for the motorized lock gates, electrical operation of the swing bridges, and illumination for the entire length of the canal at night. It was the first canal in the world to have its entire passageway lit by night, allowing round-the-clock operation.
It opened in 1899 and remained in operation until 1958 when it was in turn superseded by an enlarged Beauharnois Canal which is now part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Today, a popular cycling path follows the route of the canal.[3] In the past there have been plans to reopen the canal to pleasure boats but these have not materialized.

Soulanges Canal Lights & Coteau Landing, Quebec
With the Canadian border being closed, we were unable to get out in the Spring to visit family and take a short trip with them. It is unlikely that we will be doing any more trips this year.
So, we are now posting our pictures from prior vacations so you can enjoy some more of our travels. Unfortunately, we were using a camera with no video, no dash cam and no GoPro.
Just remember that all of our videos that you are watching are posted after we get back.

Le lieu historique national de Coteau-du-Lac, situé à près de 40 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Montréal aux abords du Saint-Laurent, témoigne d'une histoire riche de plusieurs millénaires.
En raison de sa position stratégique sur le fleuve, principale voie de pénétration du continent, le site tient un rôle majeur dans le développement du transport fluvial au pays. Lieu de passage fréquenté d'abord par les nomades amérindiens, Coteau-du-Lac devient une véritable voie d'évitement pour les autres voyageurs, français et britanniques.
Dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle, on construit sur les lieux un canal à écluses, premier ouvrage du genre en Amérique du Nord et ancêtre direct de la Voie maritime du Saint-Laurent.

After our short stay in Edmonton seen in our last video, Karen and I decided to drive back to our holiday cabin via the David Thompson Highway known as Highway 11, a very scenic route through some incredible countryside known as 'David Thompson Country', a vast region that links the prairies of Alberta to the foothills of the Canadian Rockies.
Along the way, we visit the stunning Abraham Lake, a man-made reservoir for the Big Horn Dam and stop at the wonderful Mistaya Canyon Trailhead off the Icefield Parkway near the Saskatchewan River crossing for a quick hike and a visit to this very beautiful canyon surrounded by snowy mountain peaks and carved by the rushing waters of the Mistaya River.

VIA operates The Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver, crossing much of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. It is one of the most famous train trips in the world.

Driving from Pierrefonds (Montreal), Quebec to Cornwall, Ontario - Part 1
Taking Boulevard Saint-Jean South to Autoroute du Souvenir (Highway 20), then heading East to Chemin Lotbiniere (Highway 338 East), which becomes Chemin du Canal a bit further East, which then becomes Rue Principale in Les Coteaux through Saint-Zotique, then Chemin de la Frontiere, which eventually becomes Highway 2 in Ontario.
Highway 2 in Ontario stretches all the way from the Quebec border, right down to Tilbury, Ontario where it joins Highway 401 close to Windsor, Ontario.
Highway 2 generally hugs Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River, and was the main way to get to from Toronto (and further Southwest) to the Quebec border for many years, until Highway 401 was built.
Highway 2 is generally the scenic route compared to the Highway 401, though do not expect scenery to equal the Croatian Magistrala highway (along the Adriatic Coast) or the Lower/Upper Corniches in Cote d'Azur in France.
