Eltz Castle in Germany: Would you like to live here?

Luxury, romance and a fairytale atmosphere — that's how we imagine life at the medieval Eltz Castle. But what is it really like to live there? Spoiler: there are 80 rooms, all of which require a little maintenance. DW's Hannah Hummel asks owner Jakob Graf zu Eltz about life at the castle back then and now. The castle resident has even set up his home office there. Would that be something for you, too?

Charlotte, Anne & Emily Bronte - Walking in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters

Emily Bronte, Anne Bronte, and Charlotte Bronte lived 180 years ago. We visit Bronte Country and walk in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters, piecing together their tragic short lives as we visit places they lived or frequented.
The Brontes wrote some of the most dramatic fiction right here in West Yorkshire and many of the places still exist. On our walk, we will head to where it all started at the Bronte's birthplace in Thornton. Visit the school that Charlotte Bronte immortalised as Lowood School in Jane Eyre. See Oakwell Hall which she based Fieldhead on in Shirley. Walk the wild Haworth Moors to Top Withens where Emily Bronte found inspiration for Wuthering Heights, and a whole lot more.
All the time telling the story of how the 3 Bronte Sisters came to be the famous writers we all know today.

Paris to Zurich by Train TGV Lyria FIRST CLASS | Epic European Adventure #EP5

We take the TGV Lyria train in first class all the way from Paris, France to Zurich, Switzerland. The journey takes 4 hours from Paris Gare de Lyon station to Zurich Hauptbahnhof stopping at Dijon, Belfort-Montbéliard TGV, Mulhouse and Basel along the way.

After we arrive in Zurich we check into our apartment called HITrental Niederdorf Apartments, they are in a great location in the centre of the City.

After resting for a bit we catch the tram to the Lindt World of Chocolate Museum in Zurich. On the tour you discover the history of Swiss Chocolate through interactive exhibits. The best part is the free unlimited chocolate tasting of all the Lindt Chocolate flavours. We really did eat so much free Chocolate at the Lindt Home of Chocolate we started to feel sick.

We then catch a ferry on Lake Zurich back to the City where we explore before having dinner back at our apartment.

Located next to Lake Zurich, at the foot of the Alps and in the heart of Europe, Zurich is a very cosmopolitan city.

About the train journey
Paris Zurich in 4:04 from Paris Gare de Lyon 488 km apart, Zurich is only 4 hours and 4minutes from Paris Gare de Lyon thanks to TGV Lyria, which covers this distance at a speed of 320 km/h.

From city centre to city centre, TGV Lyria provides the fastest and most comfortable transportation from Paris to Zurich. Your TGV Lyria leaves Paris Gare de Lyon in the 12th district in the eastern part of Paris. You arrive at Zurich station (Zurich Hauptbahnhof), right in the heart of the Swiss city.

With TGV Lyria you can make the best use of your time between Paris and Zurich by relaxing or being productive, and you enjoy a travel experience with no compromises. It is a smooth journey without the inconvenience of connections and with no queuing.

Liège (/liˈɛʒ, liˈeɪʒ/ lee-EZH, lee-AYZH,[2][3][4] French: [ljɛʒ] (listen), locally [li.eːʃ]; Walloon: Lîdje [liːtʃ]; Dutch: Luik [lœyk] (listen); German: Lüttich [ˈlʏtɪç] (listen)) is a major city and municipality of Wallonia and the capital of the Belgian province of Liège. The city is situated in the valley of the Meuse, in the east of Belgium, not far from borders with the Netherlands (Maastricht is about 33 km (20.5 mi) to the north) and with Germany (Aachen is about 53 km (32.9 mi) north-east). In Liège, the Meuse meets the river Ourthe. The city is part of the sillon industriel, the former industrial backbone of Wallonia. It still is the principal economic and cultural centre of the region.

The municipality consists of the following districts: Angleur, Bressoux [fr], Chênée, Glain [fr], Grivegnée, Jupille-sur-Meuse, Liège, Rocourt, and Wandre. In November 2012, Liège had 198,280 inhabitants. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1,879 km2 (725 sq mi) and had a total population of 749,110 on 1 January 2008.[5][6] This includes a total of 52 municipalities, among others, Herstal and Seraing. Liège ranks as the third most populous urban area in Belgium, after Brussels and Antwerp, and the fourth municipality after Antwerp, Ghent and Charleroi.[6]

Etymology
The name is of Germanic origin and is reconstructible as *liudik-, from the Germanic word *liudiz people, which is found in for example Dutch lui(den), lieden, Polish ludzie, Czech lide, German Leute, Old English lēod (English lede) and Icelandic lýður (people). It is found in Lithuanian as liaudis (people), in Ukrainian as liudy (people), in Russian as liudi (people), in Latin as Leodicum or Leodium, in Middle Dutch as ludic or ludeke.[7]

Until 17 September 1946, the city's name was written Liége, with the acute accent instead of a grave accent.[8][9][10]

In French, Liège is associated with the epithet la cité ardente (the fervent city). This term, which emerged around 1905, originally referred to the city's history of rebellions against Burgundian rule, but was appropriated to refer to its economic dynamism during the Industrial Revolution.[11]

History
For a chronological guide, see Timeline of Liège.
Early Middle Ages

Although settlements already existed in Roman times, the first references to Liège are from 558, when it was known as Vicus Leudicus. Around 705, Saint Lambert of Maastricht is credited with completing the Christianization of the region, indicating that up to the early 8th century the religious practices of antiquity had survived in some form. Christian conversion may still not have been quite universal, since Lambert was murdered in Liège and thereafter regarded as a martyr for his faith. To enshrine St. Lambert's relics, his successor, Hubertus (later to become St. Hubert), built a basilica near the bishop's residence which became the true nucleus of the city.[citation needed]

A few centuries later, the city became the capital of a prince-bishopric, which lasted from 985 till 1794. The first prince-bishop, Notger, transformed the city into a major intellectual and ecclesiastical centre, which maintained its cultural importance during the Middle Ages. Pope Clement VI recruited several musicians from Liège to perform in the Papal court at Avignon, thereby sanctioning the practice of polyphony in the religious realm. The city was renowned for its many churches, the oldest of which, St Martin's, dates from 682. Although nominally part of the Holy Roman Empire, in practice it possessed a large degree of independence.[citation needed]

BERNINA EXPRESS | The Most Beautiful Train from Switzerland to Italy | European Adventure #EP6????????????????

We take the Bernina Express, the world’s most scenic train journey from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. Travelling First Class in an amazing panoramic carriage we have a great view as we pass through the mountains in the Swiss Alps.

The fabulous Bernina Express is a narrow gauge train with panoramic sightseeing cars run by the Rhätische Bahn between Chur in Switzerland and Tirano in northern Italy. It's perhaps the most scenic Alpine train ride train of all - although the Glacier Express competes for the title - and one of the most scenic train rides in the world. It forms part of an alternative slow scenic route between Zurich & Milan, and an excellent scenic overland journey from London, Paris or Zurich to Milan, Florence, Venice or Rome. You can ride it all year round, a completely different experience through Alpine snows in winter and through sunny green meadows in summer.

Chur is an Alpine city and the capital of the Graubünden canton in eastern Switzerland. Winding streets in the car-free old town lead to the 13th-century, three-naved Cathedral of the Assumption, in the courtyard of the Bishop's Palace. The Brambrüesch aerial cableway ascends to a plateau with trails, panoramic views and winter ski slopes. From Chur, the Bernina Express train crosses the Alps into Italy.

Tirano is a town in Valtellina, located in the province of Sondrio in northern Italy. It has 9,053 inhabitants and is adjacent to the Switzerland-Italy border. The river Adda flows through the town.

Colico is a city in the province of Lecco, Lombardy, Italy. It is situated on the northern arm of Lake Como, where the river Adda enters the lake. Colico is the most important city in the northern part of Lake Como, which is often identified as its Colico branch.

D-DAY Beaches Of France (A Motorhome Journey)

We're really starting to wish that we had left more time to see more of Normandy before the weather really turns as there is just so much to see and do. In this video we leave Etretat and drive to the D-Day landing beaches where we stay over in the town of Courseulles-sur-Mer - aka Juno beach - where more than 14,000 Canadians stormed the 8-kilometre stretch between Courseulles-sur-Mer and St. Aubin-sur-Mer on 6 June 1944.
We also visit the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, that honors American troops who died in Europe during World War II. It is located on the site of the former temporary battlefield cemetery of Saint Laurent, covers 172.5 acres and contains 9,388 burials.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
We make vlogs, not travel guides. We don't film everything we see or do. Our videos cannot tell every story or show every place we visit. Our videos are merely a short snippet of sometimes a week's worth of life on the road and it's intended to show our experience as full-time travelers. As we're constantly on the move it's also not always possible to take the time to research every single location. We really appreciate when people offer us advice or make suggestions for our next visit. Please don't make assumptions or be rude. To us or to each other.

Walking Tour in Leiden / Netherlands - City with a rich cultural heritage / Episode2 - 4k

Leiden is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. The municipality of Leiden has a population of 119,713, but the city forms one densely connected agglomeration with its suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten and Zoeterwoude with 206,647 inhabitants.

The Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) further includes Katwijk in the agglomeration which makes the total population of the Leiden urban agglomeration 270,879, and in the larger Leiden urban area also Teylingen, Noordwijk, and Noordwijkerhout are included with in total 348,868 inhabitants. Leiden is located on the Oude Rijn, at a distance of some 20 km (12 mi) from The Hague to its south and some 40 km (25 mi) from Amsterdam to its north. The recreational area of the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) lies just to the northeast of Leiden.

A university city since 1575, Leiden has been one of Europe's most prominent scientific centres for more than four centuries. Leiden is a typical university city, university buildings are scattered throughout the city and the many students from all over the world give the city a bustling, vivid and international atmosphere. Many important scientific discoveries have been made here, giving rise to Leiden's motto: ‘City of Discoveries’.

The city houses Leiden University, the oldest university of the Netherlands, and Leiden University Medical Center. Leiden University is one of Europe's top universities, with thirteen Nobel Prize winners. It is a member of the League of European Research Universities and positioned highly in all international academic rankings. It is twinned with Oxford, the location of the United Kingdom's oldest university. Leiden University and Leiden University of Applied Sciences (Leidse Hogeschool) together have around 35,000 students. Modern scientific medical research and teaching started in the early 18th century in Leiden with Boerhaave.

Leiden is a city with a rich cultural heritage, not only in science, but also in the arts. One of the world's most famous painters, Rembrandt, was born and educated in Leiden. Other famous Leiden painters include Lucas van Leyden, Jan van Goyen and Jan Steen.

Leiden was formed on an artificial hill (today called the Burcht van Leiden) at the confluence of the rivers Oude and Nieuwe Rijn (Old and New Rhine). In the oldest reference to this, from circa 860, the settlement was called Leithon. The name is said to be from Germanic *leitha- canal in dative pluralis, thus meaning at the canals.
Canal is actually not the completely proper word. A leitha (later lede) was a human-modified natural river, partly natural, partly artificial.

Leiden has in the past erroneously been associated with the Roman outpost Lugdunum Batavorum. This particular castellum was thought to be located at the Burcht of Leiden, and the city's name was thought to be derived from the Latin name Lugdunum. However the castellum was in fact closer to the town of Katwijk, whereas the Roman settlement near modern-day Leiden was called Matilo.

Leiden was sacked in 1047 by Emperor Henry III. Early 13th century, Ada, Countess of Holland took refuge here when she was fighting in a civil war against her uncle, William I, Count of Holland. He besieged the stronghold and captured Ada.

Leiden received city rights in 1266. In 1389, its population had grown to about 4,000 persons.

Leiden today
The city's biggest and most popular annual festival is celebrated on 3 October and is called simply 3 Oktober. The people of Leiden celebrate the end of the Spanish siege of 1574.
It typically takes place over the course of two to three days and includes parades, a hutspot feast, historical reenactments, a funfair and other events. Since 2006, the city has also hosted the annual Leiden International Film Festival.

Leiden has important functions as a shopping and trade centre for communities around the city.

The city also houses the Eurotransplant, the international organization responsible for the mediation and allocation of organ donation procedures in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Slovenia. Leiden also houses the headquarters of Airbus, a global pan-European aerospace and defence corporation and a leading defence and military contractor worldwide. The group includes Airbus, the leading manufacturer of commercial aircraft worldwide.
