THE MOST MAGICAL ISLAND IN JAPAN | Miyajima Travel Guide

When visiting Hiroshima, it is a MUST to visit the incredible island of Miyajima, known as the 'Island Where God Lives'. From the cute deer who are waiting to welcome you as soon as your arrive, to the delicious traditional restaurants and shops on Omote Sando Street, to the jaw dropping views you get from the top of Mt Misen, there is something for everyone on this beautiful island. Ideally I would recommend staying overnight at a local Ryokan, but a day trip is also a great way to visit, just make sure you leave quite early in the morning if you plan on climbing up and down the mountain. Hope you enjoy the video! xx

The travel health insurance I use - PassportCard Nomads:

*I highly recommend this travel health insurance because you don't have to pay out of pocket for your medical expenses and they have very reasonably priced long term plans. You can buy the packages for shorter trips as well, but they're especially fantastic for digital nomads and nomads who want regular health insurance when they are abroad. I am an affiliate of this company, but of course use the plans myself.

Solo Travel in Miyazaki Japan | Kyushu Trip

I traveled to Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, southwestern Japan. This is where you will find Japan's Easter Island. Miyazaki has tropical atmosphere and it's a relaxing place to visit. Also, you'll find a delicious chicken nanban!

Kyushu trip started from Osaka. I took a cool overnight ferry to Kagoshima.

Things to do in Miyazaki, Japan!

Hi! I’m Maggie, a military spouse and travel obsessed 31 year old. I’ve been to over 30 countries and have been living overseas for 6 years now. I hope you enjoy my channel! Below are some links to my favorite sites, please note that some of these are affiliate links and if you choose to purchase/book from them I will make a small commission. As always thanks for supporting my channel and my passion to create content!

My amazon favorites:

I always book hotels through booking.com:

Enjoying my content? Buy me a coffee!

I am especially excited about this weeks video because we are going to Miyazaki, Japan! We’ve actually been to Miyazaki before but never made it all the way out to the coast. I had plans to go earlier in the summer but the week we had planned to go we saw torrential downpours and decided to reschedule. This trip has been on my list of places to go because of the beautiful dog friendly Airbnb that we found. A friend actually stayed in the Airbnb last spring and also recommended it so I knew I wanted to go.

JUMP TO:

Hyuga Beach: 2:49

Tjukurpa Coffee: 4:40
Umagase: 5:36
Hyuga Surf Camp Airbnb House Tour: 8:10
Udo Shrine: 9:40
Aoshima and Devils Washboard: 10:39

I wasn’t sure about the city the Airbnb was in (Hyuga, Miyazaki) but we ended up loving the small surf town vibes that it gave off. It wasn’t touristy at all and honestly felt like a local hang out. We let Olive swim on the beach in a huge tide pool and then when all the surfers left for the workweek we let her let loose on the beach and run to her hearts content. It wasn’t crowded at all, but I would say that is more likely due to the time of year. I’m sure during the height of summer Hyuga is a VERY popular place to be.

Hyuga was about a 4.5hr drive from Sasebo and we took the route through Oita on the way there. We stopped at a coffee shop AND a brewery and I definitely recommend both of them! There is something really great about finding these random places out in the middle of nowhere! It made the drive much more enjoyable to have fun stops along the way.

Once we got to the Airbnb we relaxed for the night. If you’re looking for a dog-friendly Airbnb near the beach in Miyazaki DEFINITELY check out the Hyuga Surf Camp.

I’ll share pins of all the fun places we went in Hyuga (some were mentioned in this video, others were not):

I can’t recommend all of these places enough, we really enjoyed everywhere we went and had such a great time in Miyazaki! I hope this info helps if you’re planning a trip there anytime soon!

Yakushima: an Oasis of Unspoilt Nature | World Natural Heritage in Japan

Yakushima, located off the southern tip of Kagoshima, is a natural haven filled with enchanting forests, rich biodiversity, and expansive oceanside views—earning it World Natural Heritage status in 1993 ( Said to be the inspiration for the setting of Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, the forests’ millennia-old yakusugi trees, moss-covered rocks, and sparkling streams create truly awe-inspiring memories.

Beyond its ancient trees, Yakushima’s beaches are filled with rich marine life—including treasured sea turtles—making them prime snorkeling spots. The ocean also lends itself to the island’s natural onsens. These fleeting hot springs are only accessible twice a day and offer unparalleled views of the ocean.

Aside from Yakushima’s nature, its local communities offer plenty of opportunities to interact with residents, try island cuisine, and learn about regional industries.

Wikipedia info:
Ōmura is a castle town, and was the capital of Ōmura Domain, ruled by the local Ōmura clan for over 900 years in pre-Meiji Japan. It was the site of considerable foreign trade and missionary activity during the late Muromachi period, and the Catholic saint Marina de Omura hails from this city. Due to its proximity to the trading settlement at Dejima in Nagasaki, was one of the first areas of Japan to re-open to foreign contact after the end of the national seclusion policy after the Meiji Restoration. In the opera Madama Butterfly, set in nearby Nagasaki, the place name Omara in the line ed alla damigella Butterfly del quartiere d'Omara Nagasaki probably refers to Ōmura. From 1868-1945, Ōmura was host to numerous military facilities as part of the Sasebo Naval District, most notably that of a major airbase for the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. The former naval base was the location of the squalid[2] Ōmura Migrant Detention Center, where mainly Korean refugees—termed stowaways (mikkōsha synonymous with smuggler)—were held until deportation, frequently for several years. Since August 1996 the nearby Ōmura Immigration Reception Center in a modern building serves the same function.[3]

The modern city was founded on February 11, 1942. It was largely destroyed by the American bombing on October 25, 1944. Its postwar recovery was assisted by the construction of Nagasaki airport offshore in Ōmura Bay, and by other public works projects.

Biking to Cape Toi, Kushima, Miyazaki, Japan

Cape Toi, located in the south of Miyazaki Prefecture, is a cape at the east end of Shibushi Bay, which is in the southernmost part of the Nichinan-kaigan Coast. Gentle hills extend, and you can observe wild horses, called Misaki-uma, living and grazing there. It is said that the Misaki-uma are the descendants of army horses left grazing and which became wild 300 years ago. They are now designated as a natural monument. At the Horse House in the Toi-misaki Visitor Center, information about the ecology and living circumstances of the Misaki-uma is displayed on panels.

Urwälder, wilde Küsten und einsame Gipfel | Outdoor Japan | Yakushima

Abenteuerurlaub? In Japan??
