The Best Ramen in Kumagaya City at Kikuchi Hiroki

Kikuchi Hiroki (きくちひろき) is the best ramen shop in Kumagaya if all the locals I talked to are to be believed. It is a direct descendant shop from the infamous Ichijyoryu Ganko Ramen, or just Ganko in short. Even without this information here, the ramen nerds in the know might deduce it from the big beef femur bone at the entrance, which is a telltale sign of shops with a relationship to Ganko.

While there are many similarities between Ganko and Kikuchi Hiroki, it is not a simple copy, which would be hard to do anyway. Rather, Kikuchi Hiroki builds upon its Ganko heritage and creates a new interesting style that Ganko fans can surely appreciate as well.

The soup is a wild mix of a hard to pin down broth and an almost violently strong and salty soy sauce tare. If I had to guess, I would say that there are at least in some amounts pork, chicken, beef and dried fish elements in the broth. The noodles look basically like the yellow eggy noodles of Ganko, they might possibly even be the same. The most obvious visual topping is the copious amount of abura pork back fat that covers the whole surface of the bowl, if you order the kotteri option (こってり), but there are also assari (あっさり) options on the menu with much less pork back fat. The negi green onion and menma bamboo shoots offer a welcome zing and crunch to distract a bit from the heaviness and saltiness of the bowl. The chashu is very well seasoned and basically falls apart if you try to pick it up.

On the counter of Kikuchi Hiroki you will find basically all tare seasoning varieties that the ramen shop has to offer, so if the bowl is not seasoned enough for you or palate fatigue is setting in, you can easily adjust the bowl to your liking. In similar fashion, there is also dashi on the counter, so you can actually thin out the bowl if it is too strong or rich for you.

Since Golden Tiger has opened basically on the other side of the block which Kikuchi Hiroki is on, there is finally some real ramen competition in Kumagaya. However, since Golden Tiger is a relatively new shop, most locals will still recommend you to go to Kikuchi Hiroki. It's going to be interesting to follow up in a few years. Who will be the local favorite then? Will Golden Tiger take the crown or will Kikuchi Hiroki stay on top. Let's see, but I can personally tell you that both shops are definitely worth the trip, might as well eat at both back to back. Bring an empty stomach, you'll need it.

Find Kikuchi Hiroki (きくちひろき) on Google Maps:

埼玉の桜名所 5K Saitama japan Cherry blossoms Hanami spots, kumagaya Motoarakawa 元荒川の桜並木 熊谷桜堤

桜名所 元荒川の桜並木 熊谷桜堤(埼玉県/Saitama Japan)/I shot a video of the Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, and the Motoara River Cherry Blossom Trees in Konosu City, which I wanted to visit once among the many cherry blossom viewing spots in Saitama Prefecture Japan.

Motoara River Cherry Blossom Trees (Kounosu City, Saitama Prefecture Japan)
This is a cherry blossom viewing spot with about 500 cherry blossom trees lined up on both banks of the Motoara River, which runs through the residential area near JR Fukiage Station, for about 2.5km.
There are plenty of places to see the cherry blossoms on the bank or on the promenade along the river, and there are 17 bridges of various sizes in the Fukiage area alone.
You can enjoy various landscapes depending on the season, such as a water mirror where flowers are reflected on the river surface when it is in full bloom, and a flower raft where the water surface is dyed pink.

Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi (Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture)
Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi, which has been certified as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, has an amazing collaboration of about 500 Yoshino cherry trees that bloom over 2km on the bank of Arakawa and yellow canola blossoms that bloom close to each other.
This area was known as a famous place for cherry blossoms in the Edo period, but it overcame hardships such as death in the Meiji period and burning in the Taisho period.
When the Arakawa River was renovated in 1952, cherry trees were planted as part of the Kumagaya City 20th Anniversary Project, and it became the current Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi.

A suburban area of Tokyo rich in nature and with many tourist sites

Area Characteristics

Saitama is an inland prefecture with more than 7 million people. With an area of 3,797km2(1,466mile2), it is bigger than the 179th-biggest nation of Samoa(2,842km2=1,097mile2). Access to the southern part of the prefecture which includes Omiya and Urawa is excellent as a bedroom community of Tokyo while the northern area which includes the city of Chichibu has plenty of nature.

Major Sites

Saitama Prefecture has Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park among many other sightseeing sites to enjoy nature including the downstream area of Nagatoro Gorge. Along with the landmarks of Saitama New Urban Center and Saitama Super Arena, there is a great variety of spots to see such as The Railway Museum, Bonsai Village and Kawagoe which has been dubbed “Little Edo”.

Food

Soka senbei (rice crackers), Kawagoe potato cakes and Kumagaya gokabo sweets are the 3 famous confections of Saitama. Furthermore, the prefecture is also famous as a treasure house for its comfort food including Kitamoto tomato curry which won a national curry contest, Hatogaya yakiudon (fried udon noodles) which has been recognized as one of the Top 5 yakiudon in Japan, and a form of karaage (deep-fried chicken) whose breading is made from Soka senbei. As well, there is Sayama tea which is among the Top 3 teas in the country and Coedo beer from Kawagoe which has even won acclaim abroad.

Transportation

There are 15 railways operated by JR and private corporations going from Tokyo into Saitama, so these are recommended over buses and cars. It’s customary to take the train from Tokyo Station for Omiya via Ueno or go through Ikebukuro to reach Kawagoe and Chichibu. Although Saitama has plenty of north-south lines, it has a dearth of east-west lines so if you are considering touring through the prefectural sightseeing spots, renting a car is convenient.

Our visit Nikko travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting mountains, waterfalls, temples, shrines and lakes. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Nikko tourism brochure, Nikko itinerary or Nikko, Japan tour.

10 Things to do in Nikko Tour | Japan Travel Guide Video Transcript:

After a month in Tokyo, Nikko was everything we were hoping for! We knew we were in for a treat on the train ride over once we started seeing forests and mountains all around us and the town did not disappoint.

Nikko was the breath of fresh air we were looking for; during our visit we hiked through shrines and temples, cruised a beautiful lake at the base of a volcano, sampled some local dishes featuring tofu skin, and basically had the perfect city break.

So in this travel guide, we are going sharing some of our favourite things to do in Nikko, so you too can plan your weekend escape!

The Shinkyo Bridge you see today was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some form has stood on this very same spot for much longer...even if its origins are a bit unclear.

Nikko is home to numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. We focused our visit on the Toshogu Shrine.

Now for a quick history lesson; the Toshogu shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was Japan’s last feudal military government, with the shogun as its leader.

Kegon is Nikko’s most famous waterfall. It stands almost 100 meters tall and the waters that feed it comes directly from Lake Chuzenji.

We were feeling pretty hungry after all that sightseeing, so we decided to find a restaurant serving up the local specialty: yuba! Or tofu skin.

I ordered the ramen with yuba and Sam got the udon with yuba. The tofu skin was fluffy and absorbed all the flavours of the miso.

Lake Chuzenji is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. We cruised around the lake for a bit, but then got off at one of the early stops to continue onwards to Yumoto Onsen.

Yumoto is a small hot springs town that is located in part of Nikko National Park. We then enjoyed a little walk along Lake Yunoko, before hopping back on a bus to Senjougahara Moor.

The Senjogahara Marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some great hiking opportunities within Nikko National Park.

And that’s a wrap for our Nikko travel guide! This proved to be the perfect weekend escape from Tokyo. We visited everything you see here over the course of 2 days, but this place is even better if you can come for 3 or 4 nights. Nature abounds, there are countless shrines and temples to visit, plus the local cuisine was exquisite! Now you have a few ideas of things to do around Nikko when you visit. Wishing you happy travels and see you next time!

This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.
