Ljubljana, Slovenia: City of Dragons | What to See and Do in a Day

Ljubljana, Slovenia is known as the City of Dragons and these winged creatures are the symbol of Slovenia's charming capital city. Legend goes that the city was founded by Jason (of Jason and the Argonauts) when he killed a dragon near the source of the Ljubljanica River. The dragon is a symbol of pride as a protector of the city and you find dragons everywhere, from the coat of arms to the bridges to the souvenir postcards. In this video, we explore the historical city centre by both land and water, before making our way to a Slovenian art commune called Metelkova Art Center. You don't want to miss Ljubljana's castle, which sits high above the city, the Triple Bridge, the pink church, and, of course, the Dragon Bridge. To top it all off, we try a traditional Slovenian food that is so special its recipe is protected by law: Slovenian National Cake. Get your own slice...you won't want to share!

Portorož, Slovenia - Beach resort and spa town on the Adriatic Sea

Portorož or Portorose is the most popular Slovenian resort town situated along the Adriatic coast. It is famous for its spa tradition: it is a place where, from the 13th century, the Benedictine monks treated their patients with sea salt and mud therapies. The official status of Portorož resort was obtained only in 1885 after the opening of the first hospital, and in 1910 the first large hotel - Palace - was opened. Today, apart from the rich spa culture, the destination is also known for its mild Mediterranean climate, the beautiful surrounding hills and shallow warm sea. Portoroz is buzzing with life, especially during warmer months, with its main promenade adorned by numerous hotels, casinos and restaurants. Though it has something for all budgets the town has an air of exclusivity which draws well-heeled holidaymakers from all over Europe. Besides thermal complexes, the resort is also famous for its rich cultural life and variety of interesting sites, including its main historical symbol - Hotel Kempinski Palace Portoroz. There was a time when only the wealthiest guests of the resort could stay at this fashionable hotel. Portorož is also known for its first-class casinos, many of which have also acquired the status of historical sites.
The most popular casinos and other entertainment facilities can be found on the waterfront. There is a hilltop Church of St. Bernardin, a former monastery from the 15th century and to the south there’s Forma Viva, an area dotted with unique stone sculptures. Portorož is a great destination for people seeking an active holiday. There are numerous opportunities for water sports, cycling and horse riding. It is a perfect starting point for excursions and daily tours. It is only a stone’s throw away from the medieval pearl, the town of Piran, and the beautiful cultural and historical monument that is the Lipica Stud Farm. Galleries, numerous cultural and entertainment events; specialities of Istrian cuisine; superb wellness services and facilities; – guests can enjoy all of these during their stay in the popular holiday resort of Portorož.

Italy's BEST City To Live In? ???????? North Italy's Hidden Gem | Udine

North Italy doesn't get enough love, especially the eastern side. Living in the
Friuli Venezia Giulia ourselves, we really want to share with you this hidden gem that Italy has. Don't get us wrong, we love visiting the popular cities like Rome, Milan and Venice but there is more to see in Italy. Especially if you wan to experience something more unique, authentic and without the huge tourist lines, check out Udine.

Udine, a hidden gem nestled in the northeastern part of Italy, is a city that beautifully intertwines ancient charm with modern vibrancy. Often overlooked by tourists in favor of more famous Italian destinations, Udine offers a unique and authentic Italian experience. Here's why this city is a must-visit:

- **A City Steeped in History:** Founded over a thousand years ago, Udine flaunts a rich history visible in its medieval and Renaissance architecture. The city's heart is Piazza della Libertà, acclaimed as the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland.

- **Cultural Fusion:** Udine sits at a crossroads of Latin, Germanic, and Slavic cultures, offering a unique blend that is evident in its language, architecture, and customs. This multicultural fusion makes it a fascinating spot for cultural enthusiasts.

- **Culinary Delights:** Food in Udine is a serious affair. The city is known for its traditional Friulian cuisine, a delightful mix of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences. Key dishes to try include:
- *Frico*: a mouth-watering cheese and potato dish.
- *Prosciutto di San Daniele*: a world-renowned dry-cured ham.
- *Gubana*: a delicious, spiral-shaped cake filled with nuts, raisins, and grappa.

- **Wine Wonderland:** Surrounded by vineyards, Udine is a paradise for wine lovers. It's a gateway to the famous Friuli Venezia Giulia wine region, known for exceptional white wines like Friulano and Ribolla Gialla.

- **Art and Literature:** The city boasts an impressive artistic heritage. The Tiepolo Galleries, for instance, exhibit works of the famous painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Additionally, it was the home of the poet Pasolini, adding a literary depth to its cultural tapestry.

- **Vibrant Nightlife:** Despite its historical aura, Udine has a youthful spirit, partly due to its university. The city comes alive at night with bustling bars and cafes, especially around Via Mercatovecchio.

- **Proximity to Nature:** Just a short drive from the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, Udine is perfect for those who love combining city exploration with outdoor adventures.

- **Unique Traditions:** Experience the traditional ‘Tocatì’ – a local custom where friends gather in taverns to enjoy wine, chat, and play cards.

- **Architectural Marvels:** Don't miss the Udine Castle, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

In a nutshell, Udine is a blend of historical intrigue, culinary excellence, and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for young travelers seeking an authentic Italian experience beyond the usual tourist trails.
