Things to do in Konstanz and the Bodensee in Germany!

Here is our Top 10, enjoy!

Konstanz is a charming and historic city located in the southwestern corner of Germany, right on the shores of Lake Constance (also known as Bodensee in German). The city is famous for its stunning natural beauty, its well-preserved medieval architecture, and its rich cultural heritage. With a population of around 85,000 people, Konstanz is a relatively small city that offers a high quality of life to its residents and visitors alike. In this essay, we will explore the various aspects of Konstanz and the Bodensee region, including its history, culture, geography, and attractions.

Geography and Climate

Konstanz is situated on the northeastern edge of Lake Constance, which is the third-largest freshwater lake in Europe and borders Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The city is located in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, which provide a stunning backdrop to the town. The lake itself is surrounded by picturesque countryside, vineyards, and orchards, making it a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and water sports enthusiasts.

Konstanz has a mild climate, with warm summers and cool winters. The city experiences a relatively high level of rainfall throughout the year, which helps to keep the surrounding countryside lush and green. The average temperature in the summer months is around 20°C (68°F), while in winter, the temperature drops to an average of 2°C (36°F).

History and Culture

The history of Konstanz dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Constance. In the Middle Ages, the city became an important center of trade and commerce, thanks to its strategic location on the shores of Lake Constance. During this time, Konstanz was also a center of religious and intellectual activity, and it played a significant role in the Reformation.

Today, Konstanz is a vibrant cultural center, with a rich and diverse range of museums, galleries, theaters, and music venues. The city is home to several renowned cultural institutions, including the Bodensee Theater, the Municipal Museum, and the Rosgarten Museum. Konstanz is also famous for its annual Carnival celebration, which is one of the largest and most colorful in the region.

Attractions and Activities

One of the main attractions of Konstanz is its beautifully preserved old town, which is located on a peninsula between the Rhine River and Lake Constance. The old town is home to several impressive medieval buildings, including the Cathedral of Konstanz, which dates back to the 11th century. Other notable landmarks include the Council Building, which hosted the Council of Constance in the early 15th century, and the picturesque Konzilgebäude, a former monastery that now houses a variety of shops and restaurants.

The Bodensee region offers a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors of all ages. In addition to water sports and hiking, the area is famous for its cycling routes, which wind through scenic countryside and quaint villages. The region is also home to several world-class golf courses, as well as numerous spas and wellness centers.

For those interested in history and culture, the Bodensee region is a treasure trove of museums, galleries, and historic landmarks. The Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen is a must-see for aviation enthusiasts, while the Stifts Museum in St. Gallen is home to a stunning collection of medieval art and artifacts. Situated in southern Germany, bordering Switzerland, Konstanz boasts a unique blend of German and Swiss influences, making it a captivating and cosmopolitan town.

The Council's legacy is visible in the stunning Konstanz Minster, a grand cathedral that dominates the town's skyline. Its impressive structure, adorned with beautiful stained glass windows, offers panoramic views of Konstanz and the surrounding lake.

Strolling through the town's charming streets, visitors will encounter well-preserved medieval buildings, cobblestone squares, and quaint alleys. The Niederburg district, with its half-timbered houses and narrow lanes, captures the essence of old-world charm. Discover hidden gems along the Rhine River, such as the picturesque Rheinsteig promenade, which leads to the enchanting fishing village of Staad.

The town's lively market, held twice a week, is a must-visit for food enthusiasts, showcasing an array of regional products and delicacies.

For those seeking outdoor adventures, Konstanz is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. The nearby Swiss Alps provide ample opportunities for hiking, skiing, and mountain biking. Explore the picturesque Hegau region with its volcanic landscapes, ancient castles, and vineyards, offering scenic trails and excellent wine tasting experiences.

Konstanz's convenient location also makes it an ideal base for exploring the wider Lake Constance area. Konstanz, Germany

Welcome to my three-minute film of the sights and sounds of Konstanz (Constance) in Germany, taken while I was still getting used to my new Nikon P900 Coolpix digital camera. This is a university town on the western shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee in German), close to the border with Switzerland. If you like traditional historic architecture, the variety of age and style in Konstanz’s buildings should delight you.

The famous Romanesque cathedral alone exhibits elements from several other periods: the Gothic and Renaissance styles are there, and the theme continues in the Old Town (Niederburg); just walking the streets looking is a popular pastime, and no wonder: the frescoes on the Town Hall and other buildings make the Old Town into an open air art gallery. About halfway through the video there are some modern buildings, co-existing happily with their historic neighbours. Mozart (who else?) provides the soundtrack, along with some background street noise and at times, birdsong.

The later part of the movie was shot down at Konstanz’s lake-side gardens and port. Here I get a chance to show what the Nikon can do: as the excursion boat leaves Konstanz, I zoom out with the P900 from 2,000 mm (83x optical zoom) to just 24mm, and the ship becomes a tiny dot in the far distance.

????????3 Popes 700 hundred prostitutes and 4 years time. That was the Council of Constance. It took place from November 1414 to April 1418 and was a meeting of the church leadership in Constance.
The congregation should restore the unity of the church. The overnight stay for a month costs between one and two guilders. The wine was cheap and the 700 prostitutes did a good job with the men of the council too. Since then the wildest party on Lake Konstanz. At the end all three Popes had abdicated, the new Pope was called Martin the V and the division of the Church was prevented.
