10 Things to do in Nakano: Tokyo's Cheap Budget District

These are my carefully selected 10 top things to do in Nakano, the secret budget district of Tokyo. I included gems like Koala March pastries, Daily Chico, Namco Arcade, Horumon Yakiniku and where to get a FREE Gyoza dinner to complete an epic afternoon in Tokyo. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!

???? 7-Day Tokyo Pocket Itinerary:

(exclusive Tokyo discount offers)

???? Essential Japan Rail Pass:
($215 USD, 10% discount)
➜ Your ticket to exploring Japan efficiently!

Tokyo is overrun by tourism, luckily for you there is an alternative nobody is talking about yet. The Nakano district is just 5 minutes west by train from Shinjuku and a hidden gem in Tokyo. Nakano is famous for being the oldskool Anime, Manga & Gaming mecca compared to the hugely popular Akihabara electronic town district plus is it extremely cozy and welcoming compared to obvious tourist hot spots of Tokyo.

Download my FREE map of Nakano:

Nakano is especially great to visit during a rainy day in Tokyo since Nakano's primary shopping street and the Nakano Broadway complex, which houses 250 stores, are all indoor. Nakano Broadway includes super fun places, super cheap Japanese snack shops, plenty of arcades and comic book stores to keep you entertained throughout the day.

Whoever says Tokyo is expensive is an amateur traveler and is just doing it wrong. Most travelers go to Shinjuku, Shibuya & Ginza which are quite expense. Together with my friends Heather, Kelly and Bobby we enjoyed an incredibly cheap evening food adventures in Nakano.

Start your adventure in Nakano by walking through the Sun Mall shopping street until you end up at the Nakano Broadway complex where you can browse through at least 30 Mandarake store. Mandarake is THE pre-owned comic book dealer of Tokyo since 1987. Every Mandarake store has a different theme. For the most unique Mandarake store head to the 3rd floor where you can enter a special shrine that sells vintage tin toys.

The best part of the Nakano Broadway complex is the basement. Here you'll find gigantic cheap grocery stores with incredible products ranging from household items to dirt cheap fish and delicious sushi pre-made meals.

Near the back of the basement you'll find the Daily Chico soft-serve ice cream store that sell this ridiculous 8 flavors, 40-centimeter-tall soft-serve ice cream cone which makes for hilarious selfies and sells for 480 YEN, $4 USD!

In the evening I recommend you explore the extreme cozy back alleys on the east side of the Sun Mall shopping street. This area houses plenty of sake bars, karaoke shops and izakaya’s (Japanese drinking spots) but above all wagyu beef and steak houses. Wagyu is expensive fat marbled beef that will melt on the tip of your tongue. After some digging I found that Horumon Yakiniku offers the best bang for your buck. Their wagyu beef was mouth-watering delicious.

Another place to visit is Terrie's Dog Cafe. Entrance is FREE but does require you purchase a plain tea or coffee with rates starting at only 300 YEN, $2.80 USD. Terrie's Dog Cafe is a shelter for rescue dogs so please do the right thing and support these poor little cuties.

My favorite part of Nakano is the atmosphere, it is cozy, friendly and fun, especially on a rainy day. With the massive amounts of indoor shops there is something to do for everyone. Do not hesitate and make the 5-minute train journey just west of Shinjuku main station.

In conclusion, Nakano is the definition of a cheap day in Tokyo. Especially for travelers on a serious budget. Do not pay tourist prices in the obvious tourist districts of Tokyo. Head out of the tourist comfort zone and explore the lesser known areas. You won't be disappointed!

????????????I was walking around JR Kokubunji Station (JR国分寺駅) in Tokyo (東京), Kokubunji City (国分寺市), Japan (日本).

I walked around Kokubunji Station in the south exit and north exit area.

It’s a typical residential area in west Tokyo.

“Kokubunji Station is a railway station in Kokubunji, Tokyo, Japan, operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and private railway operator Seibu Railway.” from Wikipedia.

It’s about 15 minutes to walk. I enjoyed it a lot. Please check it out!

Kokubunji: The Belly Button of Tokyo | Off-the-beaten track Japan | 国分寺観光

Explore the delights of Kokubunji, the belly button of Tokyo, in the latest video on the Maction Planet YouTube channel!

I was invited to spend a day with the Kokubunji Tourism Association on Friday 17 January 2020 to share ideas and discuss ways they could grow visitor numbers to the area.

I made a video of my adventures so that Tokyo tourists could appreciate the number of fascinating sites in the undervisited suburbs. Maction Planet is a huge supporter of initiatives to expand tourism away from the so-called ‘Golden Route’ of Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto and Hiroshima into less-explored areas of Japan. The vast majority of these efforts take place in an effort to direct tourism traffic to Japan’s more rural prefectures. However, even within the Tokyo Metropolis, there are so many under-explored areas.

-----------------

Kokubunji is located on the Musashino Terrace of western Tokyo, approximately in the geographic centre of Tokyo Metropolis – the belly button of Tokyo, as some of the local guide maps purport. The water sources along the Kokubunji Gaisen (cliff line) include the headspring for Tokyo’s No River, a tributary of the Tama River. The area of present-day Kokubunji was part of ancient Musashi Province. It was the site of a significant temple, the Musashi Kokubunji temple, built during the Nara period (714-794 AD). This temple has given its name to the town.

Places featured in the video:

Tonogayato Garden: Tonogayato Garden is tucked into a riser of the Musashino Plateau. First developed in 1913, the garden came under threat of redevelopment in the late 1960s which prompted a huge outcry. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government bought it in 1974 and opened it to the public in 1979. The garden is beautiful and full of natural and human-made features, such as a shishi-odoshi (a bamboo and water feature made to scare off wild animals) and the Koyotei (“Autumn Leaves Pavilion”) tearoom.

Terukyu Soba Restaurant 蕎麦てる久: Delicious soba noodles. The area is famous for soba due to the spring water used to make them.

Fudobashi (c. 1745): Originally called the Ishibashi – the stone bridge. In 1832, locals built a memorial to thank the bridge’s stones for being quarried and used! A small stone statue of the Fudo Myoo (AKA Acala, a Buddhist deity) nearby Fudobashi.

Otaka no michi お鷹の道– Hawk Road: Used by the Tokugawa family in the Edo period (1603-1868) as a place for falconry (hunting game with trained hawks). You can now wander along a path along a peaceful canal through residential backstreets.

Masugata-no-ike, 真姿の池: The Masugata Pond of True Form (真 (ma) means true and 姿 (sugata) means form or shape). The Masugata-no-Ike (Masugata Pond) is believed to have healing powers. A legend dating back to 848AD says that after bathing in the pond, Tamatsukuri Komachi recovered from a disfiguring illness and her beautiful “true form” was restored. Today, a small shrine to Benzaiten (Goddess Sarasvati) — one of Japan’s shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) — rests on a small island in the pond.

Nagaya-mon Gate: The former Residential House of Honda (本多) Family. An elegant long-house gate from the Edo period (1603-1868)

Musashi-Kokubunji Temple Remains: In 741 AD, the Emperor Shomu decreed that around 60 provincial Buddhist temples be built throughout Japan. Musashi-Kokubunji, founded in the Tenpyo-hoji era (757- 65 AD), was one of the largest. The temple loaned its name to the area, but was destroyed by fire in 1333 during the Battle of Bubaigawara between Nitta Yoshisada and the Kamakura shogunate which signalled the end of the Kamakura Period (1185-1333). The museum holds archaeological finds and a model of the original temple.

Kokubunji Temple: Reconstructed in 1335, 1733 and 1987.

Yakushido Temple: Features wooden carvings from the late Heian period (794–1185)

Tosando-Musashi Michi Road Remains: One of seven ancient roads dating back to the Nara period (714-794). We even got to see one remains of the original road.
