Kiveton Park Station 11/7/18

A look at the stations around Doncaster heading out towards Scunthorpe, as well as covering the stations between Lincoln Central and Sheffield via Worksop, annoyingly we went on a day where the pacers weren’t operating so really did defeat the whole object of the visiting these particular stations that’s the ones between Lincoln and Dannal, so another trip is planned to cover these, however we still had lovely weather whilst filming so please enjoy!

SHIREOAKS: Bassetlaw Parish #1 of 66

Ok so today something a little different for you. Not a Rotherham parish, not a Barnsley parish and not a Doncaster parish. This one is TVI's first foray OUT of South Yorkshire and into another county. Welcome to Nottinghamshire people!

The opportunity was too great to not take this one up when I filmed Thorpe Salvin, because literally a mile or so from Netherthorpe Airfield, you can be in the centre of this next parish, our first one in Bassetlaw, and boy is this one a good place to start! Bassetlaw has 66 parishes (NOT 67 as I said previously in a video - I forgot Norton and Cuckney have now merged into one), a right off the bat, what this one has probably won't be matched easily by some of the other 65.

You'll find an old colliery here, with a pit top used in pretty much the same was as Kiveton Park's was, and partially built on the land it once had is a marina. Yes - a MARINA - which is used by narrowboats on the Chesterfield Canal which passes right through the centre of the parish. There's also a train station here, and one of the finest churches I've ever seen.

All that is before you consider the history around Tub Row, the row of 56 terraces that stands opposite the church that didn't have any mains water until 1932, and so had to collect rainwater in their back yards, earning it the nickname. Speaking of names, this parish once had an oak tree planted where the Nottinghamshire boundary met Derbyshire and Yorkshire. The tree is no longer there, but a new one is planned to be planted at some point.

That fact the tree was there though is what led to the name of this place being what it is. This is SHIREOAKS.

****

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the district of Bassetlaw. There are 66. Here's the FIRST one - Shireoaks.

Worksop Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Nottinghamshire, and around 25 miles north of Nottingham, is the town of Worksop.

A settlement has existed in Worksop since at least Norman times. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Werchesope'. The name comes from 'Weorc', an Old English person's name, and 'hop', meaning valley or enclosure.

Geographically Worksop is situated on the River Ryton at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire at the northern end of the county. In 1296 it was granted a town charter during the reign of Edward I.

In 1777 the Chesterfield Canal opened, which passed through Worksop. This paved the way for growth in the town as industries emerged. Worksop's economy at this time mostly revolved around agriculture. The town was to be transformed with the discovery of coal in the area. The first coal mine was Shireoaks Colliery, which opened in 1859. The mining industry would provide employment to Worksop up until the 1990s when the pits eventually closed.

Today Worksop's economy revolves mostly around the service industry. It is situated roughly between Nottingham, Sheffield and Lincoln, making it practical for commuting purposes for those employed outside of the town.

Famous people from Worksop include football manager Graham Taylor, musician John Parr and golfer Lee Westwood.

WALES: Rotherham Parish #20 of 31

Don't be fooled by the name of this place, you are still firmly in England, although the name of the village which gives this parish it's name is thought to originate from the country of the same name.

You won't find any rolling Welsh valleys or snow capped peaks, nor will you find the locals speaking a language different to English. Trust me, there are no words beginning with LL around here.

What you will find though is our first look at a railway station on this channel, and like London buses, two come along at once! You'll also find a lovely country park - South Yorkshire's biggest no less - in the West of the parish, not to mention the Community Woodland that has sprung up as a result of the local colliery being closed.

There was a ton of other things to see here, so I will let this near 20 minute video do the talking.

You might not find any flags bearing a red dragon around here, but I promise you, you are in WALES.

ASTON CUM AUGHTON: Rotherham Parish #31 of 31

Two months ago, a small YouTuber by the name of Andy finally decided to have a go at doing something crazy - visit all 10.449 civil parishes in England and record the whole thing on his GoPro - an idea which he first had back in August 2020, but one to which he never really gave any serious thought.

After finally gaining the confidence to at least try it, beginning the journey with Harthill with Woodall - a video which let's be fair, is not the greatest ever on the platform - that idea has a whole lot of encouragement from people in and around Rotherham.

Oh and Doncaster.
...and Worksop.
...and Barnsley

Oh and even in some places in West Yorkshire, Not to mention there's some encouragement on an international level because The Village Idiot has reaches New York and parts of Australia given some of the messages I've had! The point of all this is that whilst TVI might have started small, it's now grown into something beyond my wildest dreams already.

So I present you with the last instalment in the Rotherham series before I head off to other parts of the country, and this one is a good one to finish the borough with. There's any number of schools, two big parks, a huge library, churches, cracking views over the valleys around and a tenth tier football club that rather amusingly nicknames it's stadium after one of the most famous in the world.

It's taken just over two months, but here we are in the 31st and final parish in Rotherham Metropolitan Borough - ASTON CUM AUGHTON.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the borough of Rotherham. There are 31. Here's the THIRTY-FIRST and FINAL one - Aston cum Aughton.

We continue our walk along the missing section of the disused Chesterfield Canal, starting where we left off in part 1 - the old Killamarsh Central Station on the Transpennine Trail south of Sheffield.

We can follow the route of the old canal path for a while, until it is lost to a housing estate in the town of Killamarsh. Crossing Sheffield Road at the old Belk Lane Lock and Lock House, we pick up the disused hollowed out canal again.

It is only after we start to enter Norwood that we leave behind the urban sprawl and light industry and the charm of the old canal starts to shine through again. We pass under a small bridge dating back to the 1830s and then enter the series of 13 locks as we ascend the Norwood Lock complex.

At the top of the locks, we can see the old bricked up portal to the disused Norwood Tunnel. Left to ruin after a collapse in the early 1900s cut off this whole western section of the canal.

We then hike under the M1 motorway, over the top of the old Kiveton Park Colliery and Kiveton Community Woodland and meet up again with the canal as it would have emerged from the other end of the tunnel all those years ago.

From Kiveton Park onwards, the canal is fully restored all the way back to the River Trent.

And that concludes our 9 mile explore over 2 videos as the missing section of the Chesterfield Canal. The efforts to reopen this lost 9 miles is still underway and remains an ambitious task as can be seen in the two videos

For anyone interested in reading more about the restoration plans of the Chesterfield Canal, have a read of this link

RUFFORD: Newark and Sherwood Parish #76 of 84

NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #76: RUFFORD

Welcome to Rufford, which is one of the smallest villages in Newark and Sherwood, yet commands the largest area of any parish in the district. That fact is due to the sheer size of Rufford Country Park, an enormous tract of land which was all part of the Rufford Estate. Mind you, if you think the land it covers now is extensive, think again. At its peak, the Rufford Estate covered approximately 29 square miles.

Following the dissolution of the monasteries, Rufford Abbey and its land was granted to the Earl of Shrewsbury. George Talbot, husband to Bess of Hardwick and The 6th Earl, George Talbot, transformed the old abbey into a country house. It was then often visited by James I and Charles I who liked to hunt in Sherwood Forest.

In 1626 the house passed to the Savile family who continued to improve both it and the estate it sits within. The Savile’s had a hand in many of Ruffords most well known features like the mill, the lake, and even the roads that run around it. Famed for many a reason, the best bit about Rufford Country Park is that today, its all completely free to walk around.

So what are we waiting for? Lets do it!

Another former canal arm off the Chesterfield Canal. This time closer to the Chesterfield end. The Norbriggs Cutting left the main canal route between Renishaw and Staveley at the 6 mile post. It ran for around 1 mile before terminating at a wharf on what is now the main Chestefield to Worksop road (A619) at Norbriggs.

The canal was opened at some stage between 1775 and 1777, just before the the main canal to Chesterfield has opened.

As we found, the route of the canal is still evident, but well overgrown. In some areas, the canal cutting has been reclaimed by farming and as an access to neighbouring houses. The Cuckoo Way trail that follows the towpath all the way to the River Trent is signposted from where the wharf once stood

At the Norbriggs end of the canal was one of the earliest examples of a railway in Derbyshire - known as a Newcastle Rail Road (or Newcastle Raile Way as it was also known). This horse drawn railway ran on wooden rails and connected the canal to nearby colliery workings and helped bring coal traffic to the canal. This railway was disbanded in the 1790s.
