SCROOBY: Bassetlaw Parish #12 of 66

If you thought Austerfield was the only place that the Pilgrim Fathers story has connections to in this part of the world, well think again. There's quote a few of them around the South Yorkshire/Bassetlaw border area and today's parish is perhaps the one with the most history connected to the Mayflower's journey some 400 years ago.

That's because William Brewster, one of the separatists, lived here in the Manor House, which now is owned by the Dunstans, and is currently being restored to it's former glory. The Pilgrim tale is etched all over this village, from the information boards, to the names of the properties, to the apple tree that's been planted in the centre. You cannot escape it.

I do try though in this video to show that the village isn't all about the Pilgrim Fathers;. Take for example the watermill (Monks Mill), with it's lovely pond and attractive exterior, or the park and the village hall both of which have much bigger roles in the community than just informing passers by of the history.

In fact, if you go a little further afield within the parish boundaries you encounter some much more gruesome history with the story of John Spencer, and a nice woodland burial ground designed to make remembering our loved ones that little more manageable for the living.

All in all you're not going to escape the history like the separatists did, but there's a lot more to see in the parish of SCROOBY.

Doncaster Floods - Kirk Sandall

Doncaster’s River Don runs next to a canal River Dun Navigation. The Don was spilling over into the canal & here you can see the expanse of water near St Oswalds Church in Kirk Sandall.

After leaving Willowfield's Self build Meeting I explored some stops in the Doncaster area. Canal side Park ups. Garden centre refreshments. Pubstop at George and Dragon in Whitely near Doncaster

Kirk Sandall Station 13/5/19

We head up to Yorkshire again to cover some more stations which are served by the Pacer Bus units. These units are now entering their last few months in service and as such we are doing a lot of revisits to get as much footage of these iconic units as possible. These are the individual station videos for the two day trip,

KIRK BRAMWITH: Doncaster Parish #31 of 43

We're not quite finished with the Northern section of Doncaster just yet, and this one's the last one in the combined area of the Moss and District Parish Council area. Whilst Fenwick had the area's only pub, this one has the area's only church, and it' is quite some structure, being an old Norman Church dating from 1120.

Perhaps the standout feature of the church lies inside, and as ever due to Covid, I still have to get inside one, but this one would have been one of the ones I would have liked to have done so at, with the temptation to try to find all 27 mice...you'll have to watch the video to find out what that means! There's also a bell in the tower, all on it's lonesome, which is the oldest bell in the Diocese of Sheffield.

Google Maps reckons you can walk from the main village to the other village in the parish and back in 26 minutes, which I put to the test in this video. Was Google Maps accurate? Normally I would say not 100%, but on this occasion it would seem to be right. A nice walk down the country lanes there and back is punctuated only by the New Junction Canal.

Speaking of the canal, we see it not once but twice here, crossing both a lift bridge like the one in Sykehouse, and a swing bridge, where the road literally rotates. All of this is the backdrop to a pretty pair of villages, one slightly bigger than the other, bit with a combined population of 320 people.

Welcome to the very small, lovely little parish of KIRK BRAMWITH.

Cruising the cut Long Sandall to Barnby Dun time lapse: MY Abus

On Friday 8 June we cruised from Long Sandall to Barnby Dun on the Sheffield and South Yorkshire navigation canal near Doncaster. The opening footage was shot using a Canon 350D (The Rebel in America) and stitched into timelapse video in HitFilm Express 4.
The remainder of the footage was shot using a GoPro Hero original and the end portion compressed into fast motion footage also in HitFilm Express.

STAINFORTH: Doncaster Parish #41 of 43

Three to go in Doncaster and all of them are in the North Eastern corner of the borough. To be fair, they're all different, none of the three can honestly say they are alike, not 100% anyway and you'll see why when we've been around all three. We're beginning the final push in Doncaster with a parish that has town status, and one that was once just seven households ground around a tiny piece of land near the River Don.

There's a lot more to it now, and once again we've hit a mining area, one of those parts of South Yorkshire that saw a huge boom in population when the mines were a thing in these parts. Arguably, you'd say that Hatfield Main Colliery that provided this town with the mining jobs which like so many other places were inevitably lost, did very well compared some of the others in Doncaster. This one lasted until 2015, barring a brief closure beforehand.

It doesn't produce coal anymore though and although the winding wheels and the equipment is still there, they stand empty and alone in a vast wilderness that's only punctuated by the occasional roar of a lorry as it makes it's way to the M18 on a brand new link road. There's much more to this town though than mining.

Check out the story behind the main church, vey unique in it's creation and backstory. There's a canal linked to the Sheffield Navigation, a market which still exists despite its very existence being threatened by the ever important market in Bawtry historically attracting more people. There are memorials all over the place, a fantastic war memorial in the grounds of the cemetery and a heap of shops which despite it all still operate as shops should. The reputation this place gets really doesn't ring true at times.

All of this, and that colliery still stands, for now. It will hopefully stay standing and provide generations to come with a lasting memory of what made this town what it is. This is the amazing town of STAINFORTH.

500 SUBSCRIBER SPECIAL - WELCOME TO DONCASTER

Hello everyone!

As promised here is the 500 subscriber special that I’ve been working towards. THANK YOU for each and every sub this channel has got!!

I have an idea for the 750 mark too now. It won't be a video, but rather an experiment...if you're intrigued, come and join the party if you haven't already!

This is a DONCASTER themed special and it does focus on the town centre, an unparished area of the borough. I still have to visit 16 parishes in the borough. They are in no particular order:

SPROTBROUGH & CUSWORTH, BRODSWORTH, THORNE, AUCKLEY, CANTLEY, TICKHILL, ROSSINGTON, BAWTRY, EDENTHORPE, ARMTHORPE, STAINFORTH, KIRK BRAMWITH, FISHLAKE, SYKEHOUSE, HATFIELD and BARNBY DUN WITH KIRK SANDALL.

Quite a lot still to do within Doncaster!

As I said before, I couldn’t have got this far without you. YOU are the reason I can do this. .So I hope you enjoy this special video dedicated to your town centre. Fun fact, I used to live in Doncaster a few years ago, so I do know it very very well. Doesn't mean I won't have missed anything though! Feel free to leave comments as always, but most of all enjoy the trip around the town!

See you down the road..

EVERTON: Bassetlaw Parish #10 of 66

You'd be forgiven for thinking I've changed my channel idea when you look at the name of this place. As big a football fan as I am, don't worry, I'm not about to stand outside Goodison Park with my GoPro (Liverpool City Council has no parishes anyway!), rather, I'm in the Bassetlaw parish of the same name as the blue half of Merseyside.

This one's got a lot to see. There are two chapels, a church, a village hall with an OS map in it's porch and a windmill which only finished working in the 1940's that's valued at well over half a million pounds. All that is just in the main village.

The parish covers a much wider area, claiming half of Drakeholes including the tunnel that the Chesterfield Canal uses to get under the Roman Road that is now the A631, and then up in the North Western corner, we find the beauty spot that is Harwell Woods and Barrow Hills, located in the smaller settlement of Harwell.

Phew! That's a lot right? Well that's not all, because the parish has a massive recreation ground too, funded and maintained by the Metcalfe Trust, named after a guy that left his land to the parish as well as neighbouring Scaftworth.

This might not be Goodison Park, but it's definitely good if you're a resident. This is EVERTON.

Trains at Doncaster - 10/05/2023

Filmed on 10/05/2023. We return to another regular playground for our trainspotting session. But, this time and after rain fell for an evenings worth of freight at Doncaster (Season 10 Episode 12)

Since our previous visit back in 2022, there has been a few changes to train services. Northern has bought back their regular Adwick to Sheffield services back to running hourly rather than every 2 hours previously. Due to a broken down train earlier in the day near Ferriby (a rear coupling broke on 2 waggons) Northern services between Sheffield/Doncaster to Hull has been with issues with trains running heavily delayed or even cancelled or turned around at earlier stations such as Doncaster vice Sheffield.

December timetable changes see's some radical changes and shakeup to some of their train services. For the South Pennines Route, Transpennine Express are now running daily trains between Cleethorpes now extending through to Liverpool Lime Street via Manchester Piccadilly. Although, most train services are running as far as Manchester Piccadilly. Also, will see the introduction of the Nova 3 sets which will be running as well as remaining on Scarborough diagrams.

Cross Country Trains as of May timetable changes will be seeing more trains serving Doncaster with an introduction of trains running every 2 hours between Newcastle and Reading via Doncaster. Using their fleet of class 220 and 221 Super Voyagers.

MAPPLETON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #123 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #123: MAPPLETON

Welcome back to the East Yorkshire coast folks! This is the parish of Mappleton which sits 3 miles to the South of Hornsea. As well as Mappleton village the parish includes the hamlets of Rolston, Cowden and Great Cowden, and it all overlooks the North Sea on the fastest eroding cliff in the whole of Europe.

In 1991, sea defences were built in order to protect the village and the B1242 which is the main road through Mappleton. Before that, intense sea erosion that had threatened to swallow up not just the cliff, but also the village itself. Although it’s still eroding away, it’s now slowed to a point where it is no longer a threat to the settlement. The success of the project created a larger higher sandy beach for Mappleton.

Locals and tourists alike can now enjoy the fabulous Mappleton Beach, a popular local attraction at the bottom of the cliff, which has a free car park at the top. You do have to have your wits about you on Mappleton Beach. Coastal erosion often reveals lots of explosive material thanks to a former RAF bombing range located down the coast at Cowden.

As well as the beach, the village itself offers a lot for such a small place. Here you can enjoy the old post office tea rooms and the fabulous Grade II listed church. Mappleton is also one of the best places to visit to see some of the UK’s coastal wartime defences.

So get your Speedos on, it’s time for a paddle in the sea!
