Places to see in ( Castleford - UK )

Places to see in ( Castleford - UK )

Castleford is a town in the metropolitan borough of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, to the north of the town centre the River Calder joins the River Aire and the Aire and Calder Navigation.

Castleford is the site of a Roman settlement. Within the historical Castleford Borough are the suburbs of Airedale, Cutsyke, Ferry Fryston, Fryston, Glasshoughton, Half Acres, Hightown, Lock Lane, Wheldale and Whitwood. Castleford is home to the rugby league Super League team Castleford Tigers.

Queen’s Park in Castleford provides evidence of Roundhouses used by the Anglo Saxons. This was a strategic area due to the views of the entire settlement. The history of the area includes Oliver Cromwell’s encampment in nearby Knottingley and Ferrybridge (originally thought to be in Castleford itself) whilst his forces laid siege to Pontefract Castle.

Castleford is only 0.93 miles (1.5 km) away from the M62 at Junction 32 via the A656 road. It has other A roads that criss-cross the town and provide access to Junction 31 on the same motorway. The River Aire and the River Calder have a confluence just north west of the town and also feed the Aire and Calder Navigation. Whilst it is an industrial waterway, it also hosts tourism with moorings on the Castleford Cut of the Navigation.

Castleford also had a second service to Leeds that left eastwards and swung north onto the former Castleford to Garforth Line, which would see services calling at Ledston & Kippax, before arriving in Garforth and continuing to Leeds.

( Castleford - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Castleford . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Castleford - UK

Helmsley, North Yorkshire, UK ????????

Helmsley is situated on the River Rye, North Yorkshire, England just about 24 miles due north of York. This small town still retains it medieval layout especially around its market square. The town may be small but it has some fascinating attractions including the national centre for Birds of Prey, Helmsley Castle, Helmsley Arts Centre and the Walled Gardens. However due to the current lockdown in place, some of these attractions were closed.

Helmsley is a perfect small town for a half day visit or to have a short break from the busy city life. Its location is perfect to explore the local Howardian Hills, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

WAKEFIELD | A walk through the City Centre of Wakefield, West Yorkshire!

WAKEFIELD | A walk through Wakefield City Centre in West Yorkshire, England
We visited the city of Wakefield Yorkshire to have a look around the streets
This was filmed in November 2021 and shows a quiet city centre

Wakefield is a city in West Yorkshire, England. It is a cathedral city (we show Wakefield Cathedral in this video too) and is set on the River Calder.

In the 18th century, Wakefield traded in corn, coal mining and textiles. In 1888 its parish church acquired cathedral status. These days Wakefield is a quiet city but comes to life at night due to the great nightlife here and the wild parties and nights out you can have!

It is the first time we have visited here and filmed the city and whilst it's nice to have a nice quiet peaceful walk it would have felt better to have a more thriving city centre. Where was everyone!?

We wander the streets on this city tour and try and find some of the blue plaques that the council has put up to celebrate and educate people about Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

I hope you enjoy this walk around Wakefield. If so please subscribe to see where I go next!

SWILLINGTON: Leeds Parish #10 of 38

Historically the full title for today’s offering in Leeds included “-in-Elmet”, which refers to the association of the village with the region of Elmet which we’ve met previously. However, as with many other places the -in-Elmet has been lost in modern times with only a few exceptions such as Barwick-in-Elmet and Sherburn-in-Elmet surviving.

While some residents commute to the nearby cities of Leeds and Wakefield or the larger towns of Garforth or Rothwell many are able to make their livelihood here. The Astley Lane Industrial estate provides a good number of jobs in many different fields of industry and almost certainly, the village's biggest employer is the multinational, award winning, specialist lubricants manufacturer, Rocol.

It was once a coal mining village, though the pits were worked out and closed, some years before the industry itself was all but destroyed. There was also a brickworks, Hansons, which is now abandoned. Several streets are named after Sir John Lowther, better known as Lord Lowther, an English landowner and Member of Parliament.

Both Lord and Lady Lowther are buried in the graveyard of St Mary's Church, and speaking of the church, have you ever wondered why confetti is thrown at weddings? Thomas Dealtry, rector from 1872–1878, is credited with having introduced the habit of throwing confetti, from his observation of rice thrown at Hindu weddings in his previous position as Archdeacon of Madras

There’s the second most Northerly vineyard in the UK here too and for some strange reason, the boundaries include Woodlesford Lock. Otherwise the unparished area of Woodlesford lies to the South of the village of SWILLINGTON.

Kippax In Leeds (West Yorkshire)

Some Ariel footage from the area,

KIPPAX: Leeds Parish #16 of 38

Today we’re on the top of a hill with some amazing views over West Yorkshire. Avid cricketers amongst you might know this place as there’s a brand of cricket bat with the same name. Musician Robert Harvey, of the band The Music, of which I’m a huge fan, is from here as well, so let’s have a look around - we’ll take the long road, and walk it (See what I did there?)

Of Anglo-Saxon origin, it was recorded as Chipesch in the Domesday Book, and was also known as Kypask and Kypax from the 13th century onwards. The placename seems to be composed of an Anglo-Saxon personal name Cippa. The village was first established in a wooded area of ash trees. The pronunciation of the name seems to show Scandinavian influence

Despite being an administrative centre for hundreds of years, the population remained small and it was mostly agricultural until the late-18th century. That’s when coal mining began on a small scale in bell pits. The discovery of coal seams in neighbouring Allerton Bywater saw it undergo a rapid expansion. It wasn’t long before it was transformed into a typical northern mining community in the 19th century

It has now adjusted to a new status as a commuter village. In some ways it’s ideally situated where it is. Its proximity to the A1/M1/M62 means that many residents now commute to Leeds, Castleford, London, Wakefield or York rather than working locally. Its status as a commuter village is seen when we look at how the age groups break down. 58% of residents are of working age, more or less the typical commuter village percentage

Come to the viewpoint and see how far you can see from KIPPAX.

MICKLEFIELD: Leeds Parish #15 of 38

There have been lots of new builds in this place in recent years, and given it stands on a railway line, and has its own railway station, this is a desirable location. It is a village of two halves linked by the old Great North Road. Housing in general consists mainly of late 19th century/early 20th century terraced cottages built for miners although there are some larger pre-war semi-detached houses too.

The name is derived from Old English and it means “Great Field”, and is listed in a Royal Charter of 963 AD which makes it one of a very special set of Yorkshire townships. That’s because due to that fact, it has a recorded history older than that of the Domesday Survey in 1086. It’s believed to have been settled as early as 620AD

Prior to this it lay in the Kingdom of Elmet. Crop marks in the area, the proximity of a Roman Road and earthworks at nearby Castle Hills suggest it might have been here in Romano-British times. The main road through the village was an ancient north/south trade route. The main road regained its importance during the Tudor Era and became the Great North Road turnpike in 1741.The village’s only pub honours the Blands family who were Lords of the Manor from 1600 to the 1920s and sole landowners from 1750 to 1830.

This is an area of Leeds that has been a site of coal mining since the 13th century. Owing to it having one of the nearest collieries to the new Selby Coalfield, the workforce was amongst the first to have the offer of relocation to Selby on the pits closure in 1980. With mining now gone, Hook Moor Wind Farm is the newest site of industry and you can see the wind turbines from pretty much anywhere in the village

If you live here you’re either from the North (OId) or the South (New) – but both halves are undoubtedly MICKLEFIELD.

Abbey House Museum tour 2019 (Things to do in Leeds)

A journey back in time to the 19th century, where we explore the traditional high street shops and homes of the time.

Abbey House Museum. Things to do in Leeds.

Abbey House museum is situated just three miles from Leeds City Centre, and is one of the more unique things to do in Leeds. It is actually the former gate house to the ruins of the old onastery referred to as Kirkstall Abbey. Here is a link to a seperate video about that:

I was shocked to discover that many of the shops of that time are quite similar to those of today. Of course there are many noteable differences, but the general concepts are the same. The chemists back then sold many additional products just as they do today. The pub looks like many small, traditional pubs of today. It was fascinating to look around and see how similar, and set how different things were back then.

Up stairs there are a few other exhibitions which are changed semi regularly. On this visit there was an exhibition hilighting the dangers that accompany many every day items including childrens toys.

Another exhibition looks at childrens story books and features displays for Humpty Dumpty, and the old woman who lived in a shoe.

Sandal Castle Wakefield West Yorkshire

Sandal Castle – zrujnowany średniowieczny zamek w Sandal Magna, dzielnicy miasta Wakefield w West Yorkshire, nad rzeką Calder.

Sandal i Lowe Hill były zamkami ziemnymi typu motte-and-bailey z drewnianymi wieżami na kopcu i podzamczem z drewnianymi palisadami i głębokimi rowami. Motte został podniesiony do 10 metrów (33 ft) z otaczającą go fosą o głębokości 7 metrów (23 ft).

Kamienny donżon był okrągły z czterema wieżami, każda o wysokości czterech pięter; dwa z nich blisko siebie tworzyły bramę, a wschodnia wieża zawierała studnię o głębokości 37 metrów (121 stóp).

Schody z barbakanu prowadziły do portu wypadowego.

W 2003 roku zapewniono drewniany chodnik, aby umożliwić dostęp do szczytu motte bez powodowania erozji.

THORP ARCH: Leeds Parish #18 of 38

So today there’s a village to walk around, but first we’ve got to get there, starting from where we left off last week. That means our first landmarks are not within the village. First up is HMP Wealstun Prison formed by an amalgamation two prisons built in 1965. The amalgamation took place in 1995 and it was an historic development for the Prison Service

The resulting prison had a category C closed side and category D open side within one establishment. Further building development has taken place at the prison in recent years. It’s now a category C prison fully, and opened as such in 2010 after building work was completed on the former category D part of the prison. Wikipedia lists one notable inmate – Owen Oyston

The village is on the north bank of the River Wharfe which separates it from Boston Spa to the south. This will be the very first time we’ve encountered the River Wharfe on the channel. The Wharfe is 65 miles long making it the 21st longest river in Britain. It is a public navigation from Tadcaster to its junction with the Ouse near Cawood and its tidal from Ulleskelf to the Ouse.

The village is quite small in comparison to the area that the parish boundaries cover. It has relatively few amenities but it does have a primary school and public house. The first written record of the village was in the Domesday book when it consisted of three farms, a church and a mill. It was recorded as “Torp”.

After the Norman conquest, the village became part of the lands which passed to Osbern of Arques and as a result became known as Thorp D'Archis and this eventually became THORP ARCH.

Moss Side in Manchester, England

Moss Side is an inner-city area of Manchester, England, 1.9 miles (3.1 km) south of the city centre. It had a population of 18,902 at the 2011 census.[1] Moss Side is bounded by Hulme to the north, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Rusholme and Fallowfield to the east, Whalley Range to the south, and Old Trafford to the west.

As well as Whitworth Park and Alexandra Park, Moss Side is close to Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan universities.[2] Manchester City played at Maine Road in Moss Side between 1923 and 2003.travel,

Parallel to this is Alexandra Road, which continues as Alexandra Road South past Alexandra Park (Alexandra Road was formerly one of two main shopping streets in Moss Side). Landmarks on Princess Road are the Royal Brewery and the Princess Road Bus Depot, built originally for the tramways in 1909 and used by Stagecoach Manchester until 2010.[18][19]

The western border of the Moss Side Ward is bounded in part by Withington Road. Parts of the eastern border are bounded by Wilmslow Road, where it meets Whitworth Park, and Parkfield Street. To the south, the border includes Alexandra Park, Horton Road and part of Platt Lane. To the north, the ward border mainly runs along Moss Lane East.[20]

The built environment of Moss Side is broadly characterised as a high-density residential area. This includes mainly Victorian and Edwardian terraces to the east and centre, with more recent developments, primarily the Alexandra Park Estate, built in the 1970s to the west of Princess Road.

The Moss Side Sports and Leisure Complex (north of Moss Lane West) was upgraded for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and has a gym and a variety of other sporting facilities.

Moss Side Community Allotment
Moss Side has longstanding Afro-Caribbean and South Asian populations. There has also been a recent increase in residents from other communities, including those from Somalia and Eastern Europe.[47]

A number of local community and voluntary groups provide social support, as well as cultural and leisure opportunities to each of these communities.[48] These organisations and institutions include The West Indian Sports and Social Club, the African and Caribbean Mental Health Service, and the African-Caribbean Care Group, which serve the Afro-Caribbean community.[49][50] The Caribbean Carnival of Manchester is also held in the area every August, usually in Alexandra Park.[51] The Indian Senior Citizens group provides support for the elderly within the Indian community.[49] Additionally, the Somali Bravanese Sisters and the Polish School Manchester cater to the Somali and Polish communities, respectively.[52][53]

The Reno was a late night club at the junction of Princess Road and Moss Lane East in Moss Side. The Reno and the Nile (upstairs from the Reno) were Manchester's most famous drinking clubs for the city's West Indian community and played a key role in the development of black culture in the city.[54]

Moss Side is also home to a population with a keen interest in green politics and sustainable living, with initiatives such as the Moss Cider Project and Carbon Co-op. Moss Side Community Allotment states its aim as involving volunteers in growing and making available locally produced organic food.[55] A local disused space, known as 'The Triangle', involved a community group in regenerating wasteground into a communal garden.[56] Other groups, such as Bowes Street Residents Association have sought to 'green' the area through the use of 'alley gating' and planting in contained alleys.[57] The 'meanwhile garden' on the site of the former bus depot is currently being turned into an apple orchard.[58] With the aim of changing perceptions of the area, a group of local residents acting as 'community ambassadors' was also formed in January 2012.[59]

The Millennium Powerhouse youth service caters for 8- to 25-year-olds and includes a music studio, fitness studio, dance studio, sports hall and offers information and advice to young people, including a library, along with recreational and sport groups. Windrush Millennium Centre, which provides adult education and other community facilities, is situated on Alexandra Road. Additionally, the area features a number of Polish and Indian restaurants and eateries.[60][61] It has also in recent years seen the opening of several Somali cafes.[32]
