KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK in ONE DAY | Grant Grove, Zumwalt Meadow | USA road trip & travel vlog

Here is everything we did while spending a day in Kings Canyon National Park!

Trails in this video:
Roaring River Falls:
Zumwalt Meadow Trail:

Check out the previous video to see what we did in Sequoia National Park the day before:

And before that, Los Angeles:

After spending a full day in Sequoia National Park the day before, we are stayed the night in a tent cabin in Grant Grove in Kings Canyon. Highly recommend. We made some Teriyaki rice and lasagna for dinner over the jet boil.

The next morning we used the showers by the cabins (which you can only use if you are staying in the cabins). And then we checked out at the John Muir Lodge.

We then did a quick drive over to Grant Grove village, where there is a visitor center, a gift shop, a restaurant, and a market. Everything was closed as we were getting an early start to our day, but we will stop by here on our way out later today.

We were spending some time in the Grant Grove area for a bit as we go to check out the second largest tree in the world, General Grant. Check out my Sequoia National Park video to see the number one largest tree in the world, General Sherman. The Grant Tree Trail is only a half mile loop with some spectacular trees along the way. I think my favorite part of this trail was actually this fallen tree that you could walk in. After wel head back to the car, we will begin our journey into the depths of Kings Canyon.

The drive into the actual canyon part of this park was about 30-40 miles, and it probably took us a little over an hour to get to the bottom. This windy road that takes you down to the canyon floor is called the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. I highly recommend stopping at some of the pullouts on this road to take in the views. Also to take a break from the white knuckle drive.

The entrance sign is down at the bottom of the canyon even though we technically started our morning in this park.

We checked out the Cedar Grove market; this is in the same building as the Cedar Grove Lodge. We didn’t find souvenirs that we wanted, but there were quite a bit of food options considering how isolated we were from the rest of society.

Next we head down the road to do a little hike, called Roaring River Falls. It is actually barely a hike, as this out-and-back walk is only about 3 tenths of a mile round trip.

About 4 minutes down the road from Roaring River Falls is the Zumwalt Meadow Trail. This 1.5 mile trail is supposed to be a loop, but it has technically been temporarily labeled as an “Out and back” trail because some of the boardwalk areas are broken near the end of the loop. However, when we went in September 2021, we completed the loop even though the boardwalk was broken, and it saved us from having to trek all the way back the way we came, saving us about 30-40 minutes.

Now we will head back out of the canyon and begin the next leg of our trip towards Yosemite National Park

But first, lunch. We will stop again at the Grant Grove village and make some sandwiches, as well as get a few snacks from the market.

Grant Grove Trail - Kings Canyon National Park

Hiking to the Grant Tree. Grant Grove Trail Kings Canyon National Park.

Located just 1.5 miles from the Kings Canyon Visitor Center, at 6,600 feet elevation, Grant Grove is one of the oldest and most popular regions of Kings Canyon National Park. First protected in 1890 as General Grant National Park, it contains the park’s largest sequoia tree, the General Grant Tree, which was proclaimed the Nation’s Christmas tree by President Coolidge in 1926.

The Grant Grove Loop is a wonderful, easy introduction to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. As the name suggests, the General Grant Tree is the star. General Grant is one of the largest trees in the world (third largest, according to signage along the trail), and undeniably impressive. It’s hard to capture the scale of these trees in photos; giant sequoias must be experienced in person to appreciate their full grandeur. The General isn’t the only big tree in this grove — more massive monarchs of the forest await your upward gaze.

Grant Grove is home to one of the largest trees in the world, and the largest Christmas tree on earth—the General Grant Tree. Considered only slightly smaller than General Sherman, considered the largest surviving tree on earth, General Grant is a mesmerizing natural wonder worthy of a visit.

Located in modern day Kings Canyon National Park, the General Grant tree is either the second or third largest tree on earth and one of the most famous giant sequoias in the world.

But Grant's Grove is home to more than just the world's largest Christmas Tree. There are many other incredible and sobering trees and stumps found within this remarkable grove. From the Fallen Monarch, a giant tree named for General Grant's civil war nemesis Robert E Lee, and colossal charred stumps that remind visitors of giant sequoias lost forever, Grant Grove is a treasure trove worthy of profound respect.
