S1 – Ep 344 – Kimberley – The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!

Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

KIMBERLEY: Broxtowe Parish #3 of 10

BROXTOWE PARISH #3: KIMBERLEY

Welcome to Kimberley, one of the towns of Broxtowe, located on the Western fringes of the City of Nottingham. Like many of the other towns and villages in the area much of the history of the town is tied up with the mining and lace industries aided and abetted by the coming of the railways. Its history goes back much further than that though.

It was recorded in the Domesday Book as “Chinemarelie”, and the main landholder at that time was William Peverell who owned large swathes of land in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Over the years Kimberley has expanded to merge almost imperceptibly into neighbouring towns and villages to form a continuous urban landscape from Nottingham to Heanor, encompassing the towns of the Erewash Valley.

Kimberley’s landmarks are plentiful. For a start, look no further than the war memorial, easily the most recognisable structure in the town and a depiction of it used as the logo of the town’s main school. Then there’s a 100 foot high water tower built to supply Nottingham with drinking water from the Derwent Valley. It also has some railway history including two old stations. What really sells this one though would be the buildings of the former Hardy and Hanson’s Brewery. After all its the business which made Kimberley famous.

There’s lots of hills in this one as well. Kimberley definitely ain’t flat! Let’s go!

S1 – Ep 150 – Victoria West – The Diamond Way between Cape Town and Kimberley!

After our stuck-in-the-mud experience on the Bokpoort road we took the tar road to Victoria West. It was interesting to learn that it marked the beginning of the Diamond Way between Cape Town and Kimberley. As we approached Victoria West, we saw beautiful pink flamingos on the dam just before town and they did a fly-by just for us. On entering the town, we could sense the rich history. Our stay at Merino Junction in the centre of town was fabulous. We rarely stay in hotels, so this was special. The food was amazing and not to mention our warm and cozy room. The next morning we were up early and ready to explore the rest of the town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #bokpoort #victoriawest #merinojunction,

10 Best Places to Visit in Australia - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

Located between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Australia is the world’s largest island and its smallest continent. There’s room to move in the Land Down Under, and with so many sights to discover and enjoy, there’s a great incentive to go on a walkabout adventure. Whether exploring the traditional lifestyle of the nation’s Aboriginal people, relaxing on a sun-kissed beach or reveling the night away in a city hot spot, Australia has something special to offer every visitor. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Australia:

Poorest Cities in the UK – Nottingham

Why is Nottingham so poor? Oh, my Nottingham! So we wish to exclaim. Alas! Salvos being fired from both sides of the divide hasn’t given us a cause for exultation in Nottingham. Can you count the number of times Nottingham has been named the poorest city in the UK within 7 years? There is definitely some requiring attention in and about this city. Oh you who dislike Nottingham, please know that you haven’t found support in this video. And you enthusiastic admirers of this city, we’re not out here now to increase your fan base. As usual, we would look at the available facts regardless of fervent rebuffs of figures by the city officials, and serve you nothing but the truth.
Figures in Public Domain
Let's peep into what available data reveals about Nottingham's situation. We start with figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Nottingham’s gross disposable household income (GDHI) is the lowest in the UK. According to the last available figures, the average yearly after-tax earnings in the city is 12,445 pounds. With that amount, residents of Nottingham resident's earnings are over 7,000 pounds less than the national average. Those who consider this alone will be justified in their assertion that Nottingham is one of the poorest cities.
The employment rate also doesn’t bode well for the city. According to the last available figures, only 57 percent of all Nottingham’s 16 to 64-year-olds are at work. This is the lowest employment rate of all major cities in the United Kingdom. This is one of the reasons the city is the poorest of 179 areas across the country. But when you look at the overall scores, Nottingham isn’t just at the bottom, it’s so far behind the rest.
As expected, this breeds crime, the rate of which has increased across the region. We all know that there’s a close link between deprivation and poverty and crime. While explaining his decision to establish the Nottingham School of Boxing in the city, Marcellus Baz, of Sneinton, a repentant gang member said that he saw there were many areas of deprivation in the city and he wanted to get the youth there to work.

Council’s Rejection
This appears to be a kind of indictment of the city council. We, therefore, understand it keeps rejecting the ranking giving a lot of reasons. Well, this is not an isolated response. This has always been the position of Nottingham’s council. One of the reasons given by the council is that it has many affluent suburbs that aren’t captured in the figures as part of the city's official boundaries. For that reason, the results, they said, have been skewed by geography. The council further states that based on its own calculation, the figure that would truly represent the city’s situation is 16,000 pounds per person once affluent suburbs like West Bridgford and Beeston have been included.
The council believes that Nottingham would move up to the 56th position of the UK districts if the places where people have more disposable income are included in the city figures. It claims that more than half of the people employed in Nottingham City live in surrounding districts.
Also, the city council always blamed the unusually high student in the city for the low ranking. As usual, the council says the city’s apparent poor economic performance is a result of 46,000 students who are less likely to be in full-time or well-paid forms of employment. According to the council, the figures of these people have diluted those of the individuals in well-paid and highly-skilled jobs who live in more prosperous adjoining boroughs.

The Big Hole, Kimberley Diamond Mine in South Africa - Bonus Clip | THE UNJUST & US

Check out Inspired Risk's first feature-length documentary:

During our journey back from Nairobi to Cape Town, we stopped to check out The Big Hole, a diamond mine in Kimberley, South Africa. This deleted scene gives a more detailed look at our visit to this unique place.

The Big Hole, Open Mine, Kimberley Mine or Tim Kuilmine is an open-pit and underground mine, and claimed to be the deepest hole excavated by hand, although this claim is disputed.

The first diamonds here were found by Erasmus Jacobs on Colesberg Kopje by members of the Red Cap Party from Colesberg on the farm Vooruitzigt belonging to the De Beers brothers, in 1871. The ensuing scramble for claims led to the place being called New Rush, later renamed Kimberley in 1873. From mid-July 1871 to 1914 up to 50,000 miners dug the hole with picks and shovels, yielding 2,720 kilograms (6,000 lb; 13,600,000 carats) of diamonds.

Since the early 2000s, an effort to register the Big Hole as a World Heritage Site has been underway.

In 1872, one year after digging started, the population of the camp of diggers grew to around 50,000. As digging progressed, many men met their deaths in mining accidents. The unsanitary conditions, scarcity of water and fresh vegetables as well as the intense heat in the summer, also took their toll. On 13 March 1888 the leaders of the various mines decided to amalgamate the separate diggings into one big mine and one big company known as De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, with life governors such as Cecil John Rhodes, Alfred Beit, and Barney Barnato. This huge company further worked on the Big Hole until it came to the depth of 215 metres, with a surface area of about 17 hectares and perimeter of 1.6 kilometres. By 14 August 1914, when over 22 million tons of earth had been excavated, yielding 3,000 kilograms (14,504,566 carats) of diamonds, work on the mine ceased after it was considered the largest hand-dug excavation on earth. By 2005, however, it was reported that a researcher had re-examined mine records and found that the hand-dug portions of the Jagersfontein and Bultfontein diamond mines, also in South Africa, may have been deeper and/or larger in excavated volume. There are other, larger, mine excavations, but these were created using earth-moving equipment rather than manual labour.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a global diamond certification system. The certification scheme was adopted on 1 January 2003 and renders any global trade of diamonds without government issued certificate as illegal. The efficacy of the Kimberley Process is dependent on its state-led border controls however, these are being undermined by weaker national governments. Organizations such as the Global Witness pulled out of the scheme on 5 December 2011, claiming that the scheme does not provide markets with certainty that the diamonds are not conflict diamonds. Both the Kimberley Process and the US Clean Diamond Trade Act aim to ensure that purchased diamonds are 'morally clean' and are not associated with any foul play. Leonardo DiCaprio's movie Blood Diamond reveals the foul play that can exist in diamond trade and a reference to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is made at the end of the film.

With mining operations closed down in 1914, the open pit became an attraction for visitors to the city. By the 1960s, a gathering together of relics of Kimberley's early days, including old buildings and sundry memorabilia, began to be organised into a formal museum and tourist attraction. In 1965 De Beers appointed Basil Humphreys as museum consultant, with the museum being substantially upgraded as an open-air representation of early Kimberley. These upgrades included streetscapes, dioramas, and exhibits of mining technology and transport. There was an official opening during the Kimberley centenary celebrations in 1971. One of the attractions was the Diamond Hall. The Mine Museum went through subsequent upgrades. Between 2002 and 2005 De Beers invested R50 million in developing the Big Hole into a tourism facility, based on the idea of creating a lasting legacy for the people of Kimberley. The new facility, the Big Hole Kimberley, and its theme of 'Diamonds and Destiny', was expected to double visitor numbers to the Big Hole.
