Old Photographs Bellshill North Lanarkshire Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Bellshill a town in North Lanarkshire, located 10 miles south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles West of Edinburgh. In the late 1700s the parish of Bothwell, which encompasses modern Bellshill, was a centre of hand loom weaving with 113 weavers recorded. Demand for coal to feed British industry meant that by the 1870s 20 deep pits coal mines were in operation in the area. Hughie Gallacher was born in 1903 in Bellshill in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was a Scottish football player in the 1920s and 1930s. In 624 senior games, Gallacher scored 463 times. He is one of the Scotland national football team's most prolific goalscorers with 23 goals from his 20 internationals, a remarkable strike rate of more than a goal a game. Gallacher was one of the Wembley Wizards who beat England 5–1 at Wembley Stadium in 1928. Alex James was born in Mossend in 1901 and brought up in Bellshill in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Alexander Wilson James was a Scottish footballer who is most noted for his success with Arsenal in London, England. James played as an inside forward, as a supporting player for the main strikers. He was famed for the excellent quality of his passing and supreme ball control.

Walking The Antonine Wall Trail, Kirkintilloch to Castlecary, Scotland, directions and Roman history

This is the walking route from Kirkintilloch to Castlecary, following the path of the Antonine Wall, built by the Romans after they had invaded Scotland. The film shows what remains today of the wall, the Roman forts and some beautiful scenery. We walked the best preserved and most scenic parts of the wall, between Kirkintilloch and Falkirk, over 2 days.

You will have heard of Hadrian’s Wall, but you may not be aware that they built a second wall further north, the Antonine Wall. The Romans built this wall between AD 142-3, in Scotland and occupied it for at least 20 years. It extended over 37 miles from the Clyde to the Forth.

Day One – This has a really scenic route, from Kirkintilloch to Twechar. You will visit Bar Hill, the best preserved fort along the Antonine Wall. There is beautiful scenery and great stretches of the Antonine Wall ditch from Castle Hill, Dullator and also at Toll Park. The film gives directions for the walking route which was just under 8 miles long approx.

We started our walk from Banks Road, Kirkintilloch, from there walk down the track and head east along the canal footpath. At the Tintock Wood sign keep left and then cross under the canal, through the tunnel and continue along the path east until you reach Twechar where you get the first glimpse of the Antonine Wall ditch. Cross over the bridge and continue down main street until you reach the war memorial, turn left up the track until you reach Bar Hill Roman Fort. Head up Castle Hill, for great views, before walking one of the most impressive sections of the ditch, as you head down the slope.

If you are in need of refreshments when you reach Twechar, there is a pub on the right of main street or further up the road you will find the Healthy Living Centre, which offers basic food and drinks.

After Castle Hill follow the sign-posted path, before you cross the B802. Continue to follow the path to Croy Hill, with spectacular scenery and views. The fort is north of Croy Hill on the descent although nothing remains today. Turn left at the cross path then take the next right towards Castlecary. When you come to the road head right and walk along it. When you come to a railway bridge take the left path and follow the path until you come to another railway tunnel, pass through it. You will see some spectacular ditch in this section at Dullator. Continue along the path, past Westerwood farm, which sits on the site of a Roman fort. Be prepared the track at the north of Cumbernauld airport is overgrown and difficult to walk through. The stretch of the ditch at Tollpark is much better and this has a long section of ditch and pleasant views to the north. This brings you to the end of the day 1 route. If you are following the 2 day walking route, when you reach Wyndford Road make your way to your accommodation. If you are staying at the Castlecary Hotel continue along the walking path directly ahead, until you reach the back of the Hotel. If you are staying at the Black Bull in Cumbernauld Village, take a right and walk down to the B816, where you can catch the X37 to the village or continue walking if you have the stamina. Please note the last bus is 7pm approx, so check times. Directly opposite the bus stop is the Wardpark Film Studios where they filmed some of The Avengers Age of Ultron and The Outlander tv series.

If you want to do the full 2 day walk and are driving to the area you can park your car near Lenzie train station then catch an X87 bus from Kirkintilloch Rd to John Street, which is close to Banks Rd. At the end of day 2 you can take the train from Falkirk back to Lenzie.

Tips: My advice come prepared for all types of weather, it didn’t stop raining on day 2!

I have made a number of films about Roman Britain and one showing all the remaining Antonine wall sites that you can still visit today. BodyCam – Kilsyth Scotland - An early October walk around Kilsyth town center.

Kilsyth is a town roughly halfway between Glasgow and Stirling in North Lanarkshire Scotland.

From earliest recorded times Kilsyth was one of the main routes between Glasgow, Falkirk and Edinburgh, and is very close to the Roman Antonine Wall, the Forth and Clyde Canal and the main Glasgow to Edinburgh railway line, with the nearest railway station at Croy.

There is archaeological evidence of settlement since Neolithic times. The Romans recognized the strategic significance of Kilsyth; the Antonine Wall forts of Bar Hill and Croy Hill are clearly visible from the present-day town. In the Middle Ages, Kilsyth held a key strategic position on one of the main routes across the narrowest part of Scotland. It was the site of two, now ruined, castles at Balcastle and Colzium. These were shown in Timothy Pont's map of 1580 and can also been seen on Blaeu's map which was derived from it. The town officially came into being in 1620 although a barony of Kilsyth preceded this. Regarding the name of the town, modern research into Kilsyth's toponymy leads to different findings than earlier analysis.

The civil war Battle of Kilsyth took place on hillsides between Kilsyth and Banton in 1645. Kilsyth was later closely associated with the various attempts by the Jacobites to regain the crown. Bonnie Prince Charlie is reported to have spent the night in the town in January 1746. The battlefield is now under the Townhead Reservoir (Banton Loch) which is a largely artificial body of water used to feed the Forth and Clyde Canal, close to its highest elevation. The canal was cut through Dullatur Bog in 1769-1770 bringing economic benefit to Kilsyth.

Historically the parish was known as Moniabrugh, or one of its variants, with its name changing sometime in the 18th century. The town economy has shifted over the past three centuries from dairy farming, handloom weaving, tambouring and extractive industries (coal mining) to light engineering, transport and service industries. Many of the townsfolk of working age now commute to work in larger towns or Glasgow.

Summer Road Trip Drive To Dalyell Estate In West Lothian Scotland

Tour Scotland Summer travel video of a road trip drive East on the A803 and A904 roads from Linlithgow on ancestry visit to the Dalyell Estate in West Lothian. There was a manor house on the estate by 1478, when records indicate the owner was an Archibald Meldrum, son of the late James Meldrum of the Bynnis. In 1599, it was owned by James Lord Lyndsay, who sold it to Sir William Livingston of Kilsyth. In 1599, it was owned by James Lord Lyndsay, who sold it to Sir William Livingston of Kilsyth In 1612 the estate was purchased by a wealthy and well connected Edinburgh burgess, Thomas Dalyell. Dalyell was a butter merchant, who had become prosperous importing butter from the Orkney Islands to Leith in Edinburgh, to be sold as axle grease. In 1601, he had married the daughter of Edward Lord Kinloss and, when the Scots King James VI ascended to the English throne and Kinloss was made his Master of the Rolls in London, England. Dalyell obtained the lucrative post of deputy. In that senior position, he acquired enough of a fortune to return to Scotland and join the landed gentry. He bought the lands of Bynnis and Croceflattis with the manor place thereof , and the Dalyell family have lived on the estate ever since
