KENDAL Cumbria [Lake District Tour]

We visit Kendal in the Lake District, Cumbria England for a tour of the town centre where Kendal Mint Cake and beautiful Lake District views are amongst it's claims to fame!
Also watch Whitby ????????

Kendal is a small market town set in the Lake District of the UK situated near Windermere and Lancaster and close to Grasmere and Ambleside. With it's historic market place and town hall this town is a must visit for anyone visiting Cumbria or spending time in the lakes.

Gimbal Walk TV takes a walk around the town centre for a look at the buildings, the little alleyways and yards, and a nosey inside the market to see the things to see in Kendal and to have a look at the restaurants, cafes, hotels and guesthouses here.

Think of it as a bit of a Lake District guide to Kendal

Kendal is situated to the south of the Lake District, six miles from junction 36 of the M6 motorway. It is just nine miles to Windermere lake and only a few miles from the sea. The market town is especially well placed to cater for everyone’s holiday needs.

The town boasts a population of some 28500 (2021) and is home to a fair selection of shopping arcades. It also boasts two castles, two museums and a host of historical buildings and bridges. There are fine restaurants, quality hotels and a multitude of public houses. The local schools are excellent, the crime rate low and the views would please the most demanding photographer.

Getting to Kendal
The town is fed by: The A65 from North Yorkshire to the South. The A591 from Barrow and Ulverston to the North. The A684 from Sedbergh to the East. The A685 from Appleby to the North East. The M6 motorway some 6 miles away to the South, providing easy access to Penrith and Carlisle and then onto Scotland.

Kendal railway station is on the branch line from Oxenholme to Windermere. Nearby Oxenholme railway station is on the West Coast Main Line from London to Glasgow.

Railway passengers can alight in Kendal from the Kendal to Windermere service, and can travel to the town from further a field by the West Coast main line from London Euston to Glasgow, getting off at Oxenholme, about two miles outside of the town.

Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around 9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all within an hour or two’s travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding.

Today the town is home to a thriving retail sector, with no less than five shopping arcades. Namely, K Village, the Westmorland Shopping Centre, Blackhall Yard Shopping arcade, the Elephant Yard and Wainwright’s Yard. The Town Centre has mostly been pedestrianised and offers a safe connection point for all these shopping areas.

In this walking tour I even buy some Kendal Mint Cake (although never get to try it as I give it away to someone on the streets of Kendal Town Centre!)

Lake District, 10 Lakes Tour, England

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
England's Lake District is one of the prettiest parts of the United Kingdom as we'll show you in our driving tour that's going to be visiting most of the lakes of this wonderful area in the northwest of Great Britain, sharing with you some astonishingly pretty views.
We'll also visit some of the small towns that dot this landscape and we will take you on a boat ride from one end of Ullswater to the other, it's the second largest Lake in the Lake District, although it's only 9 miles long, so you'll find that the Lake District is relatively compact in size.
It's about 30 miles wide and about 40 miles from north to south, all included in the National Park that was created in 1951.
Windermere 2:53 Ambleside 4:00 Rydalwater 5:14 Grasmere 5:51 Thirlmere 9:51 Derwentwater 10:50 Buttermere 13:44 Crummockwater 14:17 Keswick 15:06 Castlerrig Stone Circle 15:33 Ullswater 17:36 Brotherswater 20:11 Troutbeck 21:08 Peter Rabbit 21:56
Especially when guided by a tour company like Mountain Goat with our excellent driver, Kevin, in their minibus that will take us to all of the main sights without any effort on your part. We’re going to show you a one-day trip summarized in this movie in which we see the major lakes.
While it's called the Lake District for a good reason – that's the main attraction – there are many other sites to see, like the old stone bridge, the beautiful countryside we’re driving past, the mountain streams and lakes of course.

Top 5 Things to do in Kendal

We went around Kendal to find the top 5 things to do and here is what we thought was the best!

Places to see in ( Kendal - UK )

Places to see in ( Kendal - UK )

Kendal, anciently known as Kirkby in Kendal or Kirkby Kendal, is a market town and civil parish within the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, England. Historically in Westmorland, Kendal is situated about 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Windermere, 19 miles (31 km) north of Lancaster, 23 miles (37 km) north-east of Barrow-in-Furness and 38 miles (61 km) north-west of Skipton. The town of Kendal lies in the valley or dale of the River Kent, from which it derives its name

Kendal today is known largely as a centre for tourism, as the home of Kendal mint cake, and as a producer of pipe tobacco and tobacco snuff. Its buildings, mostly constructed with the local grey limestone, have earned it the nickname Grey Auld Town. Kendal stands on the River Kent, surrounded by low hills. Kendal is near (but not in) the Lake District National Park. When the National Park was formed in 1951 the boundary was deliberately shaped to exclude Kendal. Although a relatively small town, Kendal is an important commercial centre for a wide area thanks to its rural location. Kendal is affectionately referred to as The Gateway to The Lakes.

Kendal railway station is situated on the Windermere Branch Line and gives connections to Windermere railway station to the north, and Oxenholme Lake District railway station (on the West Coast Main Line) and Lancaster railway station to the south. Kendal is around 8 miles (12 km) from the M6 motorway, and is bypassed on the west by the A591 road, linking it to Windermere, Keswick and the A590 leading to Barrow, as well as being the terminus of the A65 road to Kirkby Lonsdale, Skipton and Yorkshire and a destination on the A6 road to Penrith. The Lancaster Canal was built as far as Kendal in 1819, but the northern section was rendered unnavigable by the construction of the M6.

Kendal Walk: Town Centre【4K】

In England's most northwesterly county of Cumbria is the town of Kendal.

It lies on the River Kent on the outskirts of the mountainous Lake District in what was originally the county of Westmorland prior to uniting with Cumberland to form Cumbria in 1974.

The town is known for its production of pipe tobacco and snuff. Its nickname is the Auld Grey Town in reference to the grey limestone buildings. Another claim to fame is the Kendal mint cake named after the town. This came about as the result of a lucky accident in a mint producing factory - the end product of which became an ideal snack for hikers and mountaineers owing to its glucose content. Sir Edmund Hillary took some along on the way to conquering Mount Everest!

The walk starts overlooking the entire town from a high vantage point before proceeding into the town centre and navigating three bridges over the River Kent.

Kendal - Lake District

Kendal is a town located in the county of Cumbria, in northwest England. It is situated in the Lake District National Park, a picturesque region known for its stunning landscapes, lakes, and mountains. Kendal is often referred to as the Gateway to the Lakes due to its proximity to this popular tourist destination.

The town of Kendal has a rich history that dates back to Roman times. It was originally a market town and later became an important center for the wool industry during the medieval period. Kendal's historic past is reflected in its architecture, with numerous buildings and structures that showcase different periods of its development.

One of Kendal's notable landmarks is Kendal Castle, a ruined medieval fortress located on a hill overlooking the town. The castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Another significant attraction is the Kendal Parish Church, also known as the Church of Holy Trinity. This impressive church dates back to the 13th century and features beautiful stained glass windows and a unique wooden ceiling.

Kendal is also famous for its culinary heritage, particularly the Kendal Mint Cake. This sweet treat, made from sugar, glucose, and peppermint, has been produced in the town since the 19th century. It gained popularity as a source of energy for mountaineers and explorers due to its high sugar content.

Additionally, Kendal hosts an annual event called the Kendal Mountain Festival, which celebrates outdoor adventure and mountain culture. The festival includes film screenings, guest speakers, and exhibitions related to mountaineering, climbing, and other outdoor activities.

Overall, Kendal offers a blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and outdoor pursuits, making it a popular destination for tourists and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
