Tarawera waterfalls, Kawerau New Zealand

This is Toanga, respect our land if you do wish to visit here.

To get to this waterfall you have to drive to Kawerau, a smaller town in the Bay Of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. South - East of Tauranga.

The road to get to the waterfall is private forestry road which require permits which you can purchase from iSite in Kawerau from there they will direct you to the right road :)
There is an optional 2 hour walk or to see the falls it is a round trip of 40mins.

Enjoy and please remember to only leave footprints.

Tarawera Waterfall and Tarawera Outlet Tracks - Bay of Plenty, New Zealand North Island - May 2020

We had wanted to do this waterfall when we first got to the Bay of Plenty, but it was all shut down during the COVID Lockdown. As soon as we dropped to level 2, we got our access permit and headed up. The hike kept you entertained the whole way up. Shimering crystal clear water, boulders and caves, underground waterfalls, rapids, rope swings. It was one of our favourites.

From the DOC Website:

Follow the track that leaves the carpark heading upstream along the Tarawera River. You will reach a bridge crossing over Tarawera River and the track continues upstream until you arrive at the falls viewing area where you can fully appreciate their splendour. Signs at the viewpoint explain the cultural and natural significance of the area.

Back-track to return to the carpark or continue along the tramping track to Tarawera Outlet (approximately another 2 hours one way).

Note: There is structural damage on the Tarawera Falls Track. The track has been re-routed to allow access to and from the falls however caution is required.

Facilities: A toilet is located at the carpark. There is a viewing area with a seat at the falls.

Access permits

Permits to the Tarawera Falls and Tarawera Outlet cost $10 per vehicle from 1 August 2018.

I discovered a stunning waterfall at my camp ???? ???????????????????? ????

The Tarawera Falls are spectacular with the water surging straight out of fissures high in a cliff face. The bluff was formed by a massive lava flow! Continuing on up the bluff to the top of the falls you find where the Tarawera River disappears underground, astonishing that such a big river does that. There’s numerous waterfalls and cascades as you walk further upstream and the blues of the water is remarkable. A couple of hours further on, I reached the Tarawera Outlet, Tarawera Lake and enjoyed a picnic lunch of lettuce wraps at the DOC camp.

????SUBSCRIBE TO CHANNEL:

The road to the Camp is currently closed so there’s foot or boat access only. It’s a lovely camp site which I plan to return to for an overnight camp.

The track is very well benched and you access it via Kawerau. Permits from the Kawerau iSite are required as you enter through private forest land. Don’t rely on Google Maps as there’s closed roads, iSite will advise which roads are open.

This scenic drive from Queenstown to Lake Pukaki is one of the best things to do in New Zealand and one of my favourite road trips in South Island. It is a 2.5 hour drive without stop. But you have to stop to experience so many different places along the way. Take a day trip and relax the beautiful drive is the best way to travel south Island.
Lake Pukaki is the largest lake in the Mackenzie District covering 178 sq kms along the northern edge of the Mackenzie basin under the magnificent presence of New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mount Cook. Glacial fed, its waters are turquoise blue caused by ‘glacial flour’ particles suspended in the water.

Lion Rock - Piha

Piha, New Zealand's most famous surf beach.

A very popular holiday destination, but also dangerous and prone to rips which can be very unforgiving, so much so that there is even a tv programme called Piha rescue, so better to stay within the patrolled areas.

But Piha is not all about the surf and black sand, it has a rugged beauty with dramatic scenery, and it's here that you will find Lions Rock!

Lion Rock is Piha’s most iconic landmark, offering spectacular views to those who climb it. Access to the top is prohibited due to a previous rockfall making the top section unstable and dangerous.

It's also a sacred site and was a landmark of great importance to Te Kawerau a Maki people who lived on the lower slopes during seasonal periods of fishing, the summit was used by them as a last line of defence during attack from other tribes of the time.
