Narita station is just one station away from Narita Airport Terminal 2, and there are so many things to see, eat and explore!
Here are 10 ways to spend your layover or spare time before/after your flight!

- Here’s a street that lasts about 800m with over 150 restaurants and souvenir shops. It prospers as a temple town from the Edo era, and you can see some of the remains from that time.
01:25 ✅ Try the delicious YAKI DANGO!
- Japanese dango are round glutinous rice flour (mochiko) dumplings that are served with a bamboo stick. On each skewer, there are typically three dango balls. We tried this Yaki Dango with miso sauce and it was so good! Price was ¥400.
02:01 ✅ Eat different STREET FOOD like this lamb skewers.
- There are a lot more types of street food you can find, especially when there are special traditional Japanese events. On this day we had this lamb skewers for ¥450.
03:19 ✅ Try their specialty UNAGI (freshwater eel).
- Narita is home to Lake Inbanuma, the Tone River, and Naganuma, where once upon a time people could catch freshwater fish such as Unagi. It’s usually pricey, but you could also try the skewers for only ¥350.
04:41 ✅ Visit the NARITASAN SHINSHOJI TEMPLE and the 3-storied pagoda.
- Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is a large and highly popular Buddhist temple complex in Narita. Admission is free, and you can also enjoy the beautiful pagoda.

- These are random fortunes written on strips of paper, which are usually received by making a small offering (usually ¥100) and randomly choosing one from a box, hoping for the resulting fortune to be good. We got “uncertain luck” this time ????

- It’s a large garden of 165,000sqm using the hilly land behind the Main Hall of Shinsho-ji Temple completed in 1928. There’s a lovely pond with koi too.

- Also known as “Heiwa no Daito” is a 58m-tall structure that was built in 1984. You could visit the museum on the ground level too.
12:39 ✅ Try the sweet CANDY APPLE.
- Candied apples, ringo ame in Japanese, is a popular treat which you will always find at Japanese festivals. We were lucky to find a stall in Naritasan and the price was ¥300 for the small one.
13:46 ✅ Eat at ISOMARU SUISAN in front of Narita station.
- Before riding the train home, we had dinner at this restaurant located just in front of the station. If you love seafood, here’s the place to go! We got grilled squid, sashimi/seafood bowl for reasonable prices.

Located in the well-preserved Edo-era town of Sawara in Katori City, Chiba, the Grand Festival is a 300-year-old historical event. There are two parts to this event: the summer and autumn festivals. The autumn Suwa-jinja Aki Matsuri and the summer Yasaka-jinja Gionsai are together known as the Grand Festival of Sawara. A total of 24 floats, 14 of which are paraded around the town in the autumn Suwa-jinja Aki Matsuri. The teams have a beautifully melodic chanting called Sawara-bayashi, and dancing takes place while the teams are taking breaks.
The town of Sawara prospered in the Edo era as it was a major transportation, using the Tone River to ship goods into Edo, Tokyo.
Dashi (floats)
14 floats parade during the autumn Suwa-jinja Aki Matsuri. The floats are 4m tall and have figures mounted on top modelled after mythical and historical figures. The floats are decorated with fine carvings of folk tales, lions, dragons, and hawks carved by master burinists. Turning the floats is a major undertaking with teams using wooden logs to jimmy the float into position.
Sawara-bayashi chanting
Sawara-bayashi is the festival chant. There are over 40 songs performed by musicians riding on the floats, and add to the unique atmosphere of the festival. This tradition has continued for 300 years. When the floats are stationary the teams pulling them around the town perform dances and drink.
Inoh Tadataka
Sawara is known as the home of Inoh Tadataka (1745-1818), a man who surveyed the geographical features of Japan and created the first map of the country during the Edo era.
