There are not many tourists who know about the historical town of Kurashiki on the outskirts of Okayama. I was very fortunate to find out about this area when I was passing through and I would highly recommend you visit here if you enjoy the more traditional side of Japanese culture. It is very easy to get to if you are already staying in Okayama or there is also the option of staying right in Kurashiki with many beautiful ryokans. In today's Japan Walking Tour series, join me on a sunset walk at Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama!
Kurashiki (倉敷) is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the capital city of Okayama.
Kurashiki has a preserved canal area dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name Kurashiki can roughly translate as the town of warehouses for rice warehouses.
Many of Kurashiki's former warehouses have been converted into museums, shops and cafes. Ohara Museum is the most impressive of Kurashiki's museums, displaying a large collection of works by famous Western artists.
This canal area is a 10-minute walk from Kurashiki Station. You can enjoy a nice peaceful walk and feel like you are in historical Japan.
