Kamnik is one of the most beautiful medieval cities of Slovenia preserved to our days. The most beautiful part of the city is certainly its old center. Narrow streets and red-tiled houses have preserved the unique spirit of the Middle Ages to this day.
Kamnik is the center of Slovenian beekeeping. Here they breed carnian bees (Apis mellifica carnica), which were still bred by the Romans in the eastern Alps. Today, this breed is called kranjska bee.

Velika planina smjestila se u Sloveniji u Kamniško-Savinjskim Alpama, sjeveroistočno od Kamnika. Prosječna nadmorska visina iznosi 1500 metara, a najviši vrh Gradišče visine je 1666 metara. To je ujedno i najveće pastirsko naselje u Europi sa 140 koliba. Kamnik, Slovenia ~ 4K Virtual Walk
Kamnik is a historical town with a tidy and attractive medieval core, with its houses and portals of hewn stone, balconies, and arcades. It is located on the right bank of the Kamniška Bistrica River and south of the Kamnik Alps.
For centuries Kamnik controlled the pass in the Tuhinj Valley to the east that was indispensable for moving goods from the coastal areas to Štajerska and Koroška. But when the route was redirected via Trojane to the south-east in the 1600s, Kamnik fell into a deep sleep and only awakened in the late 19th century when the town was linked by rail to Ljubljana.
Kamnik's most important historical sight is The Little Castle (Mali Grad), located on a low hill above the southern end of the main square. The story tells that the Little Castle was home to Veronika, a legendary countess who was turned partly into a snake when she refused to help the Christian faithful build a church. In her rage at having been asked to contribute, she struck the entrance to the castle with her fist - the imprint of her hand is still visible today. Veronika continues to rule the treasure of the Little Castle and, in a way, the community of Kamnik too. She appears both on the town seal and on the licence plate of every car registered there. There are many interesting churches and other buildings in this town, one of them being an attractive beige-and-orange house with the glassed-in loggia (the building used in the thumbnail for this video) designed by famous people Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Another cultural attraction that you must not miss when you visit Kamnik is Miha Maleš Gallery which contains works of the eponymous painter and graphic artist who was born in Kamnik in 1903.

Medieval Town Walk Tour - Kamnik, Slovenia
Take a walk in old medieval town Kamnik.
Kamnik is a town in northern Slovenia. It is the central settlement of the Municipality of Kamnik. It encompasses a large part of the Kamnik Alps and the surrounding area. The town of Kamnik has three castles as well as many examples of historical architecture.
The name Kamnik was first mentioned in the 11th century. The first time it was mentioned as a town was in 1229, when it was an important trading post on the road between Ljubljana and Celje. This makes the town one of the oldest in Slovenia. In the Middle Ages, Kamnik had its own mint and some aristocratic families among its residents. The town was among the most influential centers of power for the Bavarian counts of Andechs in the region of Carniola at the time. The only remnant of the Bavarian nobility are the two ruined castles which are both strategically built on high ground near the town center. The Franciscan monastery built in the town itself is a testament to its importance. The building is well preserved and has undergone extensive renovation in recent years.
Most of the old town center is built in an Austro-Hungarian style. Most of the facades have been renovated in recent years but the process is still ongoing.

Hike Slovenia ,Velika Planina (Big Pasture) high in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps
A lovely hike in the Kamnik Alps. It's a high alpine hike to traditional Herdsman Huts. During the summer, herdsman bring their cattle to graze in the pristine meadows. You can drive to the car park and pay 10.00eu for parking. You can take the cable car and chair lift to the top (for a fee).
You can even rent the huts, use as a home base for hiking in summer and skiing in the winter. This hike I'm accompanied by my 2nd cousin Zdenka and her grand daughter Rhea, along with my wife Melissa.
