Top 7 Things to do in Arashiyama Japan

Here are my Top 7 Things to do in Arashiyama, Japan. This is also my travel guide for Arashiyama in Kyoto, Japan! Arashiyama is a neighborhood in northwester Kyoto and has so many amazing activities including hikes, parks, food, temples, bamboo, onsens, and MUCH more!

Kakuda Kouseien (角田香勢園) is my favorite hidden gem in the area that serves fresh milled matcha by the kindest shop owner. There is a lot of street food around the area that you can buy, the Tenryu-ji temple, the bamboo forest, Station Center, Togetsu-kyo Bridge, a Monkey Park, and a foot bath all in the same area!

The Top 10 Places in Kyoto (Japan)

The Top 10 Places in Kyoto #kyoto #japan #top10 #top10placesinkyoto #arashiyama #kinkakuji #kiyomizu #ginkakuji #fushimi #heian #palace #keage #nanzenji #nijo #shrine

1. Arashiyama
Arashiyama is in the far west of Kyoto, tucked along the base of the Arashiyama Mountains (meaning “Storm Mountains”). It’s a fair distance from the center of Kyoto: whether you go by train, bus, bicycle or taxi, you’re generally looking at about a 30-minute trip. Still, it’s worth it for the number of great sights here.

2. Fushimi Inari
Fushimi Inari Shrine (伏見稲荷大社, Fushimi Inari Taisha) is an important Shinto shrine in southern Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which straddle a network of trails behind its main buildings. The trails lead into the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari, which stands at 233 meters and belongs to the shrine grounds.

3. Kiyomizu
Kiyomizudera (清水寺, Pure Water Temple) is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall's pure waters. The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

4. Kinkakuji
Kinkakuji (金閣寺, Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408. Kinkakuji was the inspiration for the similarly named Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), built by Yoshimitsu's grandson, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, on the other side of the city a few decades later.

5. Heian Jingu
Heian Shrine (平安神宮) has a relatively short history, dating back just over a hundred years to 1895. The shrine was built on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the capital's foundation in Kyoto and is dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who reigned from the city, Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei. Heian is the former name of Kyoto.

6. Nanzenji
Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺), whose spacious grounds are located at the base of Kyoto's forested Higashiyama mountains, is one of the most important Zen temples in all of Japan. It is the head temple of one of the schools within the Rinzai sect of Japanese Zen Buddhism and includes multiple subtemples, that make the already large complex of temple buildings even larger.

7. Keage Incline
The Keage Incline is a two-minute walk from Keage station on the Tozai subway line in Kyoto. The Keage Incline was a canal inclined plane system that helped transport rice, sake and soy sauce to Kyoto from neighboring Shiga prefecture from 1891 to 1948. Since the area is hilly, this inclined plane was built to transport ships. Many tourists visit this area because there are a lot of temples and shrines like Nanzen-ji, Zenrin-ji, and Heian Shrine. Walking on the tracks overgrown with weeds you can feel a relaxed calmness take over. If you go further down the slope you will get to a boat and a cradle that was used to carry the boats up the slope. It is interesting to get to know about the history of the incline.

8. Ginkakuji
Ginkakuji (銀閣寺, Silver Pavilion) is a Zen temple along Kyoto's eastern mountains (Higashiyama). In 1482, shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa built his retirement villa on the grounds of today's temple, modeling it after Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), his grandfather's retirement villa at the base of Kyoto's northern mountains (Kitayama). The villa was converted into a Zen temple after Yoshimasa's death in 1490.

9. Imperial Palace
The Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所, Kyōto Gosho) used to be the residence of Japan's Imperial Family until 1868, when the emperor and capital were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo.

10. Nijo Castle
Nijo Castle (二条城, Nijōjō) was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). His grandson Iemitsu completed the castle's palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the castle by adding a five story castle keep.

Kyoto Temples, Shrines & Gardens, Japan [Amazing Places 4K]

Kyoto has been capital of Japan for more than thousand years (794-1869), and its Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, palaces and classical gardens have become symbol of the Japanese cultural tradition, art & architecture.
Seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto are on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Kyoto illustrates the development of Japanese wooden architecture, particularly religious architecture, and the art of Japanese gardens, which has influenced landscape gardening the world over. (whc.unesco.org/en/list/688/)

Walking around Arashiyama park / 4K Kyoto

Arashiyama is the second-most important sightseeing district in Kyoto. It’s filled with temples and shrines, but the star attraction is the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.

The main street of Arashiyama, along with the famed Togetsu-kyo Bridge, which form the heart of Arashiyama, is nothing but a tourist circus.

Zhou Enlai's poem in Kameyama Koen!

This park is located in the Arashiyama area and the entrance is alongside the river. You have to walk away from the bridge and follow the path next to the river. After a couple of 100 meters there is a path that leads up the mountain. The peak of the mountain is about 340 meters. As you follow the path you will see on your right the stone commemorating Zhou Enlai's visit to Arashiyama. He was moved by the cherry blossoms and mountain greenery. The four poems Zhou Enlai wrote about his visit are engraved on a stone monument: Arashiyama in the Rain.

京都亀岡の苗秀寺に医いてまいりました。
撮影時は紅葉のピークはまだでしたが、今頃はピークを迎えていると思います。
苔の参道に落ちる紅葉が大変美しかったです。

The highlight of Miaoshuji Temple is the autumn foliage. Miao Shu-ji Temple is also known as Kameoka's Maple Tree Temple, and the view from the Yakuimon Gate is said to be spectacular.

Miao Shuji Temple is also said to have been founded in the Nara period (710-794). It is said that the temple name Miaoshu-dera derives from the phrase 'the spirit seedlings in the forests will excel indefinitely and without limit'. Miaoshu Temple is said to have been a Kokubun nunnery and a temple of the Yugashu sect of Buddhism. It was later converted to the Tendai sect in the Heian period (794-1185), with Dengyodaishi Saicho as its founder, and remained a major power until it was devastated by Oda Nobunaga's vassal Akechi Mitsuhide's invasion of Tamba in the Warring States period, and details of its past are no longer known. The area has been lost. In 1625 (Kan'ei 2), in the early Edo period, Matsudaira Narishige, the fourth head of the Matsudaira family and the first lord of the Kameyama domain in Tamba, rebuilt the temple as a Soto-shu temple in Noshita, where it had once stood. In the mid-Edo period, the present site, the ruins of the Kameyama clan's mountain castle, was given to Aoyama Inaba, who became the feudal lord of the Kameyama clan in Tamba, and was later re-established by Matsudaira Nobumine, the 11th head of the Katahara Matsudaira family and the first feudal lord of the Kameyama clan in Tamba. Matsudaira Nobumine built the present Hodo (main hall). Miaoshu-ji enshrines the principal deity, Shaka Nyorai.
Miaoshu-ji is a Soto Zen temple.

京都亀岡の鍬山神社に行ってまいりました。
生憎の曇り空で、折角の紅葉も少しくすんでしまいました。
当たり前ですが陽の光って本当に大切ですねぇ...

Built in 709, Kuwayama Jinja was long protected by the feudal lords of Kameyama Castle. This shrine's long history and close proximity to Kameyama Castle established a strong relationship between the feudal lords and the citizens of the town. It was also an ideal location for the fall festival (the Kameoka Festival held in October). It honors the Shinto God credited with creating the Tamba region in which Kameoka is located. The area where Kameoka sits now was once a lake. It is said that a Shinto God dug a path through the mountains with a hoe, which drained the lake and became the Hozugawa River. This shrine is named after that act (in Japanese, kuwa means hoe and yama means mountain). Registered as a national cultural asset, Kuwayama Shrine is famous for its maple trees. The leaves turn such brilliant colors in the fall that the shrine seems as if it is surrounded by fire.
