The lords of Heverlee built a first castle here in the 14th century. From the beginning of the 16th century the current castle was built in renaissance-style. It was extensively renovated in neo-gothic style in the 19th century. In 1916 the duke of Arenberg donated the domain to the university.

The Arboretum, Nottingham
We ventured into town and decided to pop to The Arboretum whilst we were there. This is a nice little park which has a small lake, aviary, bandstand, flowers and wildlife.
We fully support walking for mental wellbeing. Spending time outdoors is known to lift mood, elevate relaxation levels and reduce stress and anxiety. Why not give it a try?

Bornem Golden Village - Filmpjes Jan De prins
Bornem is uitgegroeid tot een bruisend en levendig dorp .Aangenaam om te wonen.
Bornem was al bewoond in de Gallo-Romeinse tijd. De naam werd in 1101 Burnehen gespeld (verblijf bij de bron)
Het 'Land van Bornem' is als zelfstandige heerlijkheid tot stand gekomen in de periode van de plundertochten van de Noormannen (9de eeuw). Strategisch gelegen aan de Schelde, op de plaats waar nu het Kasteel de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde staat aan de huidige Oude Schelde.

The territory was already inhabited in the Gallo-Roman times. The name was spelled in 1101 Burnehen (stay at the source).
The 'Land van Bornem' came into being as an independent glory during the period of the plunderings of the Normans (9th century). Strategically located on the Scheldt, on the site where the Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde castle now stands on the current Oude Schelde.

De Kalmthoutse Heide is een natuurgebied in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen, nabij het dorp Kalmthout en de Nederlandse grens. Het gebied bestaat voornamelijk uit heide met vennen, zandverstuivingen en dennenbos. Het natuurreservaat maakt deel uit van een aaneengesloten natuurgebied dat zich aan beide zijden van de Belgisch-Nederlandse grens uitstrekt en een oppervlakte beslaat van ongeveer 3750 ha,het Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide.
The Kalmthoutse Heide is a nature reserve in the Belgian province of Antwerp, near the village of Kalmthout and the Dutch border. The area consists mainly of heather with fens, sand drifts and pine forest. The nature reserve is part of a continuous nature area that extends on both sides of the Belgian-Dutch border and covers an area of approximately 3750 ha,the Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide.

Antwerp is a major destination in Belgium in the region of Flanders. It is renowned for being the world's leading diamond city and more than 70% of all diamonds are traded there. The Diamond Market is the hub of the economic section in Belgium. More than 85% of the world’s rough diamonds, 50% of cut diamonds, and 40% of industrial diamonds are traded in the city. Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium. It has a beautiful historic city center, and is world-renowned for its fashion industry. The port of Antwerp is the second largest in Europe, and a major economic player in Belgium.
The name Antwerp is most likely derived from aan de werpe, which is Dutch for at the throw, referring to a place where the bending river throws its sand. Locals might tell you of an ancient urban legend, saying it comes from Hand werpen, which translated is throwing (a) hand(s). In the official flag, the castle het Steen and the hand of Antwerp are shown.
In the 16th century, Antwerp was one of the most important financial centres of the world, where traders from all over Europe and Asia sold and bought their goods. After the siege of Antwerp in 1585 by the Spanish, this role as a financial centre was taken over by Amsterdam. Nevertheless, since the 19th century and especially the 20th century, Antwerp has made a serious economic comeback.
The public transportation company De Lijn operates a dense network of buses, trams, and pre-metro (underground tram) connections in the city and its surroundings. Most things to see are near or within the Boulevards, the half-moon of avenues where there were once 16th century city-walls. This old town center, with a diameter of about 1.5 km can be walked, but there is excellent public transport.
The municipality comprises the city of Antwerp proper and several towns. It is divided into nine entities (districts):

Antwerp is the focus of lines to the north to Essen and the Netherlands, east to Turnhout, south to Mechelen, Brussels and Charleroi, and southwest to Ghent and Ostend. It is served by international trains to Amsterdam and Paris, and national trains to Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Brussels, Charleroi, Hasselt, Liège, Leuven and Turnhout. A small airport, Antwerp International Airport, is located in the district of Deurne, with passenger service to various European destinations. A bus service connects the airport to the city centre.

The Bollekesfeest is a showcase for such local products as Bolleke, an amber beer from the De Koninck Brewery. The Mokatine sweets made by Confiserie Roodthooft, Elixir D'Anvers, a locally made liquor, locally roasted coffee from Koffie Verheyen, sugar from Candico, Poolster pickled herring and Equinox horse meat, are other examples of local specialities. One of the most known products of the city are its biscuits, the Antwerpse Handjes, literally Antwerp Hands. Usually made from a short pastry with almonds or milk chocolate, they symbolize the Antwerp trademark and folklore.

Een verslag van mijn bezoek aan Arboretum Kalmthout op een mooie zondagmiddag in februari. De bomen zijn kaal, maar de hamamelis of toverhazelaar bloeit. Dit arboretum staat daar om bekend en er komen daarom veel bezoekers rond 1 februari!
I visited Arboretum Kalmthout on a nice day in February. This arboretum is famous for the hamamelis (witch hazel) which is blooming now. Because of that, there are many visitors in the park.
Jag besökte Arboretum Kalmthout på en trevlig dag i februari. Det finns många besökare i trädgården eftersom trollhasslarna blommar. Detta arboretum är känt för det.

The castle on the estate housed noble families for many generations. The estate is named after Karel de Coloma, chamberlain to Empress and Queen Maria Theresia of Austria. After his marriage to Baroness Eugenia Roose, he became owner of the castle. The garden developed step by step into the superb collection of roses it has today. In 1994-1995 the first rose garden was developed. The garden has predominantly red and white roses, referring to the colours of the Roose baronetcy. The geometric design reflects the original style of the estate and recalls the vegetable garden it replaced. The enormous interest and appreciation resulted in a successor: the Flemish rose garden. The result was a range of 250 different varieties. The idea of a rose trail quickly took shape and this resulted in the design of a garden tracing the history of rose cultivation and an international rose garden. These were opened in the year 2000. In the winter of 2001-2002, the tower building was restored and was given a new function as a rose museum. In 2004, a standard rose garden was opened. The roses here are grouped by colour. 2009 was the year of the Japanese rose garden, with more than 150 varieties and the Chinese rose garden was officially opened in 2012. The rose garden is still under full development. Annually, new countries and more varieties of rose are introduced. More information:
