Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Driving Tour 4K
Kailua-Kona is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. It is also known as Kailua (a name it shares with a community on the windward side of Oʻahu), as Kona (a name it shares with the district to which it belongs) and as Kona Town. Kailua-Kona is the second-largest settlement on the island of Hawaii (after Hilo) and the largest on the island's west side, where it is the center of commerce and the tourist industry. Kailua-Kona is served by Kona International Airport, just to the north in the adjacent CDP of Kalaoa. The population was 19,713 at the 2020 census, up from 11,975 at the 2010 census.
Kailua-Kona was the closest major settlement to the epicenter of the 2006 Kiholo Bay earthquake.
Kailua-Kona's boundaries were altered significantly for the 2020 census. The eastern portion of Kailua-Kona became part of the neighboring Holualoa CDP, while the western portion of Holualoa became part of Kailua-Kona.

5 things to do in Kailua Kona
You know when you are driving around Kailua Kona and see a building or a road and you never knew what was in there or down that road? Well, we uncover five of these in this video for you!
One of these, One Aloha Shave Ice, is a building you drive by ALL the time off of Kuakini Highway and probably have never stopped to taste this DELICIOUS Hawaii treat made with natural flavors.
Or how about driving down Lunapule Road and there's a white building with little shops..you will find TeaLicious Kona and it's quaint tea room and delicious pastries.
Enjoy finding a hidden garden? Then you will be happy to discover the Sadie Seymore Botanical Garden with its trellises of blue jade ivy and red and yellow Mysore Trumpet vines. Bonus is the Full Circle Thrift Store. Further north of town, have you driven past the Natural Energy Lab (NELHA) and wondered if there was a beach down there? There is!
How about Moku'aikaua Church? The oldest Christian church in Hawaii sits right in the center of Kailua Kona with its beautiful spire behind wrought iron gates. (There is a story you will discover in the video about our attempts to show you the interior!)

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii - Downtown Kona (2018)
Kona is a moku or district on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi in the State of Hawaii. In the current system of administration of Hawaiʻi County, the moku of Kona is divided into North Kona District (Kona ‘Akau) and South Kona District (Kona Hema). The term Kona is sometimes used inaccurately to refer to its largest town, Kailua-Kona. Other towns in Kona include Kealakekua, Keauhou, Holualoa, Hōnaunau and Honalo.
In the Hawaiian language, kona means leeward or dry side of the island, as opposed to ko‘olau which means windward or the wet side of the island. In the times of Ancient Hawaiʻi, Kona was the name of the leeward district on each major island. In Hawai‘i, the Pacific anticyclone provides moist prevailing northeasterly winds to the Hawaiian islands, resulting in rain when the winds contact the windward landmass of the islands – the winds subsequently lose their moisture and travel on to the leeward (or kona) side of the island. When this pattern reverses, it can produce a Kona storm from the west. Kona has cognates with the same meaning in other Polynesian languages. In Tongan, the equivalent cognate would be tonga; for windward, the associated cognate would be tokelau.
Kona is the home of the world-famous Ironman World Championship Triathlon which is held each year in October in Kailua-Kona. The Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park marks the place where Captain James Cook was killed in 1779. Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park and Honokohau Settlement and Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park are in Kona.
The volcanic slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa in the Kona district provide an ideal microclimate for growing coffee. Kona coffee is considered one of the premium specialty coffees of the world.
In pop culture, the region served as the basis of the Beach Boys' song Kona Coast from their 1978 album M.I.U. Album.
Kona is the home of one of the main bases of the international Christian mission organization YWAM, and the University of the Nations, first founded here.
HAWAII BIG ISLAND - Beaches and volcanic lava ???? | Kailua-Kona
Hawaii's Big Island is unlike any other Hawaiian island. Imagine seeing volcanic lava everywhere (thankfully, today mostly solid lava from past eruptions). Still, very impressive. At the Big Island, you'll find one of the most active volcanoes in Hawaii and the world, the Kilauea, but that's only one of the 5 volcanos there. This scenario is even at the beaches in the Big Island, as you see volcanic rocks mixed with sand. And we went to one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii: Magic Sands beach. We were lucky we could get in, as there was sand! ???? After starting the day trying the famous Kona Coffee, we also drove up the Kohala Coast to see the resort area, which is pretty amazing, and finished back downtown Kailua-Kona for a lovely sunset. I have been to Kona Hawaii several times so I finally compiled my list of the 5 Best Things to do in Kona Hawaii. Kona is a great town - it is my favorite place to stay on the Big Island and it is also a port for Cruise Ships.

Like anything worthwhile, Makalawena Beach makes you work a little bit to enjoy it. This secluded white sand beach is a crescent broken up by rocky lumps of lava. Palms and other trees rim the dunes near the northern end where you are greeted with picnic tables and some wild chickens. It's not likely that you will run into many people here and those that you do meet, may not be fully clothed - consider yourself warned.
