Visiting the Samurai Residence District in Kakunodate, Akita

The Kakunodate Samurai Residence District is most popular in the autumn with the beautiful fall colors and in the spring because of the weeping cherry trees. In fact, it's beautiful all year round, and whenever you happen to be in the area, it's worth visiting. There are two resdence-complexes that have become museums and charge a modest admission, the Aoyagi and Ishiguro houses, and four other smaller ones that are free to explore, though offer limited access. The streets themselves are beautiful in that area as well.
Location:

Enishi doesn't have an official English website, but is a great guest house to stay in while you're in the area. It's 7,000 yen per person per night, which is roughly $60 or so. You can email the owner at enishi.kakunodate@gmail.com or send her a direct message on Instagram. (Also, give her a follow on Instagram- @akitainu_kakunodate)
Location:

The sunken forest that appears this time of year is best viewed from this bridge. (Pin dropped at best place to park your car.)

Kakunodate, Japan - Historic Kakunodate (2019)

Kakunodate (角館町 Kakunodate-machi) is a town located in Senboku District, Akita Prefecture, Japan.

In 2003, the town had an estimated population of 14,138 and a density of 90.26 persons per km². The total area was 156.63 km².

Northern Japan 2 - Matsushima and Kakunodate

This is the second of a number of videos of a trip thru northern Japan. On the second day we visited Matsushima and Kakunodate. Matsushima is an area at the coast with around 260 small islands. It is said to be one of the most beautiful sceneries in Japan. Then we went to Kakunodate. Kakunodate is famous for its wonderful historic samurai houses.

Visit The Once Samurai Village of Kakunodate, Japan

Kakunodate is a former feudal town with well-preserved samurai residences. Free entrance into many but no video is allowed. So... let's gloss over them and skip to the Autumn Festival.

Held for 2 days every year on September 7-9, we were extremely lucky to visit on the last day. Immense floats are pulled through the streets!

Kakunodate Japan Deep in Snow Country 4K

Kakunodate is a small town deep inside Akita prefecture in northern Japan where the winds and winters are harsh and the people have to be resourceful and resilient to survive.

The town itself famous for a collection samurai era houses and buildings that have survived from ancient times to the modern day. Several estates and houses that visitors can tour can be traced back to high-ranking samurai families that served as retainers to the powerful local lords.

Adding to its beauty hundreds cherry trees line its streets and along the Hinokinai river attract thousands of visitors every year when in full bloom. The town itself is preserved almost as it was in the Edo era and served as a real-life set of a samurai town for several Japanese TV series and movies.

Kakunodate is an old town about an hour from Akita by Shinkansen. It is the center of old Samura houses. It has been around for hundreds of years. When you arrive in this town, you feel that you are going back in time.

I love the atmosphere of this old town. If you are interested in experiencing the ancient times of Japan, do visit Kakunodate.

Lake Tazawa is just half an hour from Kakunodate by Shinkansen. However, you must be careful about the local bus routes and schedules. I recommend that you should take the Round-the-lake Bus to see the scenery of the entire Lake Tazawa.
