10 Best Places to Visit in China - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in China:

MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

Top Summer Routes In China - Henan

Henan (Chinese: 河南; pinyin: Hénán; Wade--Giles: Ho-nan) is a province of the People's Republic of China, located in the central part of the country. Its one-character abbreviation is 豫 (yù), named after Yuzhou (豫州 Yù Zhōu), a Han Dynasty state (zhou) that included parts of Henan. Although the name of the province (河南) means south of the river,[1] approximately a quarter of the province lies north of the Yellow River, also known as the Huang He.

Henan is often referred to as Zhongyuan (中原 zhōngyuán) or Zhongzhou (中州 zhōngzhōu) which literally means central plains or midland, although the name is also applied to the entirety of China proper. Henan is the birthplace of Chinese civilization with over 5,000 years of history, and remained China's cultural, economical, and political center until approximately 1,000 years ago. Numerous heritages have been left behind including the ruins of Shang Dynasty capital city Yin and the Shaolin Temple. Four of the Eight Great Ancient Capitals of China, Luoyang, Anyang, Kaifeng, and Zhengzhou are located in Henan.

With an area of 167,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi), Henan covers a large part of the fertile and densely populated North China Plain. Its neighbouring provinces are Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, and Hubei. Henan is China's third most populous province with a population of over 94 million. If it were a country by itself, Henan would be the 12th most populous country in the world, behind Mexico and ahead of the Philippines.

Henan is the 5th largest provincial economy of China and the largest among inland provinces. However, per capita GDP is low compared to other eastern and central provinces, and Henan is considered to be one of the more backward areas in China. The economy continues to depend on its dwindling aluminum and coal reserves, as well as agriculture, heavy industry, tourism, and retail. High-tech industry and service sector is underdeveloped and is concentrated around Zhengzhou and Luoyang.

Kaifeng Museum | HENAN CHINA

Kaifeng Museum was established in March of 1962. Its highlights are its historical instruction, especially the instruction about revolutionary history, the Song Dynasty exhibits, and its collection of art.
The museum began as Henan Provincial Museum. But when the main collection was moved to Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, the museum became Kaifeng Municipal Museum.
The museum is in a relatively quiet area with beautiful scenery. It is only about 10 meters from a big pond, Baogong Lake. The museum building is grand and magnificent, and covers an area of more than 5,000 square meters.
It has four floors, of which three floors are used as the exhibition halls. Over 50,000 relics are displayed there, including ancient crockery, bronze utensils, paintings, carvings, icons, and jade.
The First Floor
The collection features a portrayal of the Northern Song Empire capital city on the first floor. There are also exhibits on Kaifeng's revolutionary history, exhibits pertaining to the Northern Song Dynasty, and some artifacts from Kaifeng's Jewish history.
The Rainbow Bridge, a famous painting work that shows a prosperous Northern Song Dynasty, riverside scene at Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan, is exhibited on the first floor.
When you enter the building, you can see a wooden portrayal of Kaifeng in the Northern Song Empire period, before the area was overrun by the Jurchens. At that time the city was called Bianjing. The Northern Song Empire had advanced technology and was comparatively rich, and they built tall towers. You can see some of them today, and learn about the city's architecture at the museum.
Several revolutionary actions and battles against Japan were fought in the area from the time of the end of the Qing era to 1948. You can learn about and see documents of the times in the South Hall.
The Second Floor
On the second floor you can learn about the Northern Song Dynasty and its economy, science, art, and history. At that time Kaifeng was one of the world's largest cities.
With prior arrangement with the staff, people can see three stone steles, a pot, and perhaps other artifacts from the ancient Kaifeng Jewish community. The steles date from about 500 years ago. That remarkable small community of people existed from at least the Northern Song Dynasty times 1,000 years ago or even before. It almost died out in the 20th century, but it is reviving as some of the descendants learn Hebrew and visit Israel.

Experience the Vibrant Culture of Zhengzhou Through an Immersive Walking Tour

Zhengzhou was the center of ancient China, and now it is also a transportation hub and an important city in central China.

I am very glad to have the opportunity to come to Zhengzhou again. The last time I came to Zhengzhou was during the epidemic, and this time I shared some information about the new look of the city after the epidemic.

-------------------⭐⭐

Zhengzhou is the provincial capital of Henan Province, located in central China. The Yellow River carves its way through Henan and it boasts four of China's ancient eight capitals as well as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.

Zhengzhou is experiencing a revitalization from recent wealth coming into the province and the whole city seems to be getting a facelift: new buildings, new roads, new signs.

Everywhere you turn there's a construction site. In a few years, it might be a pretty city full of newly planted trees and modern buildings.

-------------------⭐⭐
Location
-------------------⭐⭐
Zhengzhou is about 470 miles (760km) south of Beijing and 300 miles (480km) east of Xi'an. The Yellow River, one of China's major waterways and the cradle of China's civilization, flows to the north. Mount Song, Song Shan, sits to the west and the Huang Hai plains surround the city to the south and east.

The city is a major transportation hub as two major railways intersect here as they crisscross China. You'll have no trouble finding a train or plane to get you to Zhengzhou.

-------------------⭐⭐
History
-------------------⭐⭐
Zhengzhou was the first capital of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1027BC), the second dynasty recorded in Chinese history. Ancient packed-earth city walls can still be seen in some parts of Zhengzhou. Inhabitants of the city are proud of their heritage. The best way to review Zhengzhou and Henan province history is by visiting the Henan Provincial Museum in Zhengzhou.

Zhengzhou, a metropolis on the Yellow River, is the capital of east-central China's Henan province. With history dating to Neolithic times, it's notable as the ancient Shang dynasty capital, whose earthen walls still stand in the city center. It's also home to the pyramid-shaped Henan Museum, where cultural exhibits from prehistory and early China include jade and musical instruments.

Zhengzhou is the capital city of Henan Province, located south of Yellow River and bordered Luoyang and Kaifeng. It has a long history of about 3000 years, which left behind rich historical heritages. Be close to Zhengzhou, the historical city Kaifeng was chosen to be the capitals of ten different dynasties and states. It is also known for having the oldest extant Jewish community in China.

Zhengzhou has a long commercial history, there are also some ancient merchants built manors, such as Liuzhenhua Manor, known as the spiritual homeland of generations. Come to Zhengzhou, you can’t miss witnessing the momentum of Yellow River; Yellow River Sightseeing Zone is a wonderful place to know its charm.

-------------------⭐⭐
Brief Introduction of Henan Museum
-------------------⭐⭐
Located in the capital of Henan Province of central China, Zhengzhou city, covering an area of over 10000 square meters, Henan Museum has over 130,000 pieces of relics through the ages, most of which were from archaeological excavations in Shangqiu, Luoyang, Anyang, Kaifeng, Xichuan, Sanmenxia, Huixian, Xinzheng.

Among them, 5,000 pieces are the first and second graded national treasures. From prehistoric cultural relics to bronze vessels of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, and pottery and porcelain wares of various dynasties. During the Anti-Japanese War, some precious cultural relics of Henan Museum were finally transferred and collected in Taiwan National Museum of history.

Inside the museum, there are basic exhibition halls, specialized exhibition halls, and provisional exhibition halls. For the first batch of exhibitions, two basic displays and six specialized displays are offered.

The Henan Museum, in Zhengzhou City, is one of China’s oldest museums – a key museum with modern displays and exhibitions, modernised equipment and a unique architecture. The province of Henan is situated in the middle reaches of the Yellow River.
