When I was a student growing up in East Tennessee, one of my favorite places to take a class trip was the small town we're showcasing today. Established in 1779 almost two decades before Tennessee was granted statehood, Jonesborough is known as the oldest town in the state.
At the time, this was the western frontier settled by folks from Virginia and North Carolina. By the mid-1780s, it had become a capital city for the autonomous short-lived State of Franklin. It existed just under five years more as a republic and was never admitted into the union by Congress. The Lost State of Franklin became a footnote in American history.
During the early 1800s, Jonesborough became an epicenter for the movement to end slavery. An influential, widely-circulated newspaper that became known as The Emancipator was published in a building that once stood on Main Street. It was the first American periodical dedicated exclusively to the issue of abolition.
Local preservation efforts over the last century have managed to maintain the early American look and vibe of this small town of just under 6,000 residents. A few buildings still stand from the late 1700s. Jonesborough has become a destination for heritage tourism attracting people from all over the world who admire the architecture and want a glimpse into a bygone era.

Tennessee's Oldest Town: Jonesborough
Jonesborough, Tennessee is older than the state in which it is located. In fact, people met in the town back in the day, in hopes of creating the State of Franklin. Benjamin Franklin, however, wanted nothing to do with that idea.
This video looks at some of the historic features of the town. It also discusses the impact of the International Storytelling Center and Festival, which calls Jonesborough home.
There will also be a look at the charming downtown and some of its merchants.

It is home to a Nissan Motor manufacturing plant, one of the largest automobiles manufacturing plants in the country, and it has a diverse population. Smyrna also has quality schools. There are lots of attractions and amenities in Smyrna. Restaurants in the town offers lots of local and international delicacies, there's Smyrna Airport when you want to travel, you can visit its multiple parks, Sam Davis Home and Plantation (a 200-acre museum and working farm), and Smyrna Golf Course.
10. Rogersville - Located in Hawkins County, Rogersville is a town in Tennessee with a population of 4,653 people. If you need a town with a suburban feel, Rogersville is for you. The median home value in Rogersville is $136,200 and median rent is $608. There are good public schools for your children and access to quality healthcare for everyone.
