Khotyn fortifications (currently in Ukraine) have been known since the times of Vladimir the Great. Fortress lies on the Dniester river and often passed from hands to hands as an important Moldavian, Polish and Ottoman border stronghold, with new owners introducing improvements. In the 18th century external fortifications around the fortress were added by Turks.
Several important battles were fought here. Two of them are very famous.
In 1621 the army of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth repulsed the great invasion of the Ottoman Empire. The enormous number of people took part in the several-week battle (soldiers and armed servants) for about as many as 300,000. During the battle on 7 of September, 600 hussars crashed about 10,000 enemy soldiers in a single charge. At this sight Sultan Osman II cried with grief and powerlessness.
In 1673 the roles were reversed. The army of the Ottoman Empire defended the castle and spread around the fortified camp. In the two-day battle, the army of the Polish - Lithuanian Commonwealth gained reinforcements and defeated the opponent.
The “PL-UA. History by drone” project consists of 100 short film productions depicting architectural monuments that were created in the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The series of short documentary films were screened in Ukraine. A Polish-Ukrainian team consisting of historians, journalists, writers, non-governmental organisations and youth joined forces to create the films. Project was financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.

The Delfi is a Moldovan-flagged oil tanker owned the British company Mister Drake PC and built in 1977 with a gross tonnage of 881. Due to a heavy sea storm, it ran aground on a stretch of beach just south of the Ukrainian port city of Odessa and beached on 22 November 2019. The crew consisted of only three people (five is more standard): the captain, sailor and mechanic, all of whom were evacuated against their will as they had been concerned to leave the ship without getting wages from the owner. In September, 2020, the tanker was towed off the mole but only after the surf had flushed the toxic grease and oil out of its engines and hull and into the Black Sea. Hydrocarbons in the water were measured at 157 times the accepted maximum. The incident is considered a terrible ecological disaster and the ship is considered a total loss.
Odessa is the third most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism center, seaport and transport hub located in the south-west of the country, on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. The city is also the administrative center of the Odessa Raion and Odessa Oblast, as well a multiethnic cultural center. Odessa is sometimes called the pearl of the Black Sea, the South Capital (under the Russian Empire and Soviet Union), The Humor Capital and Southern Palmyra.
Before the Tsarist establishment of Odessa, an ancient Greek settlement existed at its location. A more recent Tatar settlement was also founded at the location by Hacı I Giray, the Khan of Crimea in 1440 that was named after him as Hacibey (or Khadjibey). After a period of Lithuanian Grand Duchy control, Hacibey and surroundings became part of the domain of the Ottomans in 1529 and remained there until the empire's defeat in the Russo-Turkish War of 1792.
In 1794, the city of Odessa was founded by a decree of the Russian empress Catherine the Great. From 1819 to 1858, Odessa was a free port—a porto-Franco. During the Soviet period, it was the most important port of trade in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base. On 1 January 2000, the Quarantine Pier at Odessa Commercial Sea Port was declared a free port and free economic zone for a period of 25 years.
During the 19th century, Odessa was the fourth largest city of Imperial Russia, after Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Warsaw. Its historical architecture has a style more Mediterranean than Russian, having been heavily influenced by French and Italian styles. Some buildings are built in a mixture of different styles, including Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Classicist.
Odessa is a warm-water port. The city of Odessa hosts both the Port of Odessa and Port Yuzhne, a significant oil terminal situated in the city's suburbs. Another notable port, Chornomorsk, is located in the same oblast, to the south-west of Odessa. Together they represent a major transport hub integrating with railways. Odessa's oil and chemical processing facilities are connected to Russian and European networks by strategic pipelines. The population in 2021 was 1,015,826.
