Angel ¦ (3/?) ¦ Love Your London ¦ Canalside pubs, City Road Basin, Amazing architecture
In their third instalment around Angel, Islington, Tristán White and Sharon Crawford explore the area around the part of the Regent's Canal just off Colebrooke Row as well as the City Road Basin. They enjoy Louisiana hospitality at the Plaquemine Lock, a pub run by Jacob Kenedy whose great-grandmother is part of Louisiana's history, and whose mother Haidee Becker painted some excellent murals for the pub. Other pubs we visit in this episide are the Narrowboat, the Island Queen and, from the outside only, the Wenlock Arms. We also visit the Islington Boat Club, where we talk to volunteer Tom Diamond about what it does, and we explain to you about Crystal Hale, who saved the City Road Basin from development and who started the Boat Club among many other local initiatives. We also tell you about her father, one of the last two MPs for Oxford University. The rest of the episode is dedicated to architecture. We compare the fabulous Canaletto Tower with the equally fabulous Kestrel House, and talk about two interesting structures that use Corten® steel: the Bunhill 2 Energy Centre, and an award-winning mixed-use block on Wharf Road.
