What to do in Japan in Winter

I spent a week traveling around central Japan, and here are some things you can do in Nagano Prefecture in the winter!

In part 1 of my Japan winter series, I visited the beautiful mountains in Chino and Komagane city in Nagano.

The views at the top of Mt. Kurumayama and Senjojiki Cirque were breathtaking and best of all you can get to the top easily by a ski lift or cable car.
For those who want more of a workout, it's a great starting place to hike to the other mountains in the Japan alps!

Stay tuned for part 2 where I share with you what you can do around the city and a hidden gem in Nagano!

10 Things to do in Nikko Tour | Japan Travel Guide Video Transcript:

After a month in Tokyo, Nikko was everything we were hoping for! We knew we were in for a treat on the train ride over once we started seeing forests and mountains all around us and the town did not disappoint.

Nikko was the breath of fresh air we were looking for; during our visit we hiked through shrines and temples, cruised a beautiful lake at the base of a volcano, sampled some local dishes featuring tofu skin, and basically had the perfect city break.

So in this travel guide, we are going sharing some of our favourite things to do in Nikko, so you too can plan your weekend escape!

The Shinkyo Bridge you see today was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some form has stood on this very same spot for much longer...even if its origins are a bit unclear.

Nikko is home to numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. We focused our visit on the Toshogu Shrine.

Now for a quick history lesson; the Toshogu shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was Japan’s last feudal military government, with the shogun as its leader.

Kegon is Nikko’s most famous waterfall. It stands almost 100 meters tall and the waters that feed it comes directly from Lake Chuzenji.

We were feeling pretty hungry after all that sightseeing, so we decided to find a restaurant serving up the local specialty: yuba! Or tofu skin.

I ordered the ramen with yuba and Sam got the udon with yuba. The tofu skin was fluffy and absorbed all the flavours of the miso.

Lake Chuzenji is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. We cruised around the lake for a bit, but then got off at one of the early stops to continue onwards to Yumoto Onsen.

Yumoto is a small hot springs town that is located in part of Nikko National Park. We then enjoyed a little walk along Lake Yunoko, before hopping back on a bus to Senjougahara Moor.

The Senjogahara Marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some great hiking opportunities within Nikko National Park.

And that’s a wrap for our Nikko travel guide! This proved to be the perfect weekend escape from Tokyo. We visited everything you see here over the course of 2 days, but this place is even better if you can come for 3 or 4 nights. Nature abounds, there are countless shrines and temples to visit, plus the local cuisine was exquisite! Now you have a few ideas of things to do around Nikko when you visit. Wishing you happy travels and see you next time!

This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

FAQ
================================

Q: How long was the trip?
A: Around 18 days. But I would say it's doable in 2 weeks. If you want more time to explore then 3 weeks should be more than adequate.

Q: How many days do I need in each city?
A: I would say 3-5 days in Kyoto and Osaka. Nara 1-2 days. At least 4-6 days in Tokyo but the more the better.

Q: How much did it cost?
A: Excluding hotels + airplane tickets we had a budget of around 2000 USD

Q: Is there vegan restaurant options in Japan?
A: Yes, I found plenty, and most restaurants offer vegan-friendly meals

Q: Which month did you go?
A: We visited in July but I would recommend visiting in either the Autumn or Spring season

Q: Where did you stay overnight?
A: You can find links to the different accommodations above + alternatives.

【Japan 1minute Travel FUKUSHIMA Lake Inawashiro】 福島 猪苗代湖(しぶき氷と磐梯山)

福島 猪苗代湖(FUKUSHIMA Lake Inawashiro)

This is a driving video of the Inawashiro and Bandaisan area from Koriyama Station in Fukushima Prefecture. Koriyama is about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen bullet train.

It was a little early for autumn leaves this year, but we enjoyed an exhilarating drive through the countryside and magnificent mountains.
The roadside station is very spacious, and we stopped at the tourist information center to check out the road conditions, and then enjoyed eating and shopping at the ramen shops, sweet shops, local fruits and specialties, and many other delicacies!
It is definitely worth a stop for a scenic drive!

An area of various tourist spots ranging from an everlasting summer resort to regions of heavy snow

Area Characteristics

Located in the southern Tohoku region, Fukushima is the 3rd-largest prefecture after Hokkaido and Iwate. It is separated into 3 areas: Hamadori which runs along the Pacific coast by cities such as Iwaki, the central region of Nakadori which has the capital city of Fukushima and Koriyama, and the western region of Aizu which becomes covered in snow in the winter. Fukushima Prefecture is surrounded in beautiful nature with many famous mountains such as Mt. Bandai, lakes and the Pacific Ocean with plenty of winter sports.

Major Sites

There are 2 tourist areas for Fukushima. On Mt. Bandai which is considered to be one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, there is Lake Inawashiro, Lake Goshiki and Tsuchiyu Onsen, and in historical Aizu-Wakamatsu, there is Aizu-Wakamatsu (Tsuruga) Castle, the Important Cultural Property of Sazae-do Hall, the Aizu Samurai Residences and other historic buildings. Other popular attractions include Spa Resort Hawaiians known for its hula girls, the Edo Era post station Ōuchi-juku and Hanamiyama which is famous for cherry blossoms.

Food

There are numerous examples of famous dishes ranging from regional cuisine such as ika ninjin (squid jerky and carrot strips) and miso kanpura (boiled potato with miso paste) to local dishes such as Kitakata ramen, enban gyoza dumplings, and namie yakisoba noodles. Also famous is the unique negi soba which has you picking up the noodles with one stalk of green onion in lieu of chopsticks, tama konnyaku, and tochi rice cakes.

Transportation

Fukushima can be reached from Tokyo by Tohoku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) in 1 hour and 40 minutes while Koriyama can be reached in 1 hour and 20 minutes. Moving around the area by rental car is convenient.

Accommodations

There are many hotels and similar facilities in transportation-accessible Fukushima and Koriyama along with areas such as Aizu. Because Mt. Bandai is a volcano, the surrounding area is known as an onsen region with many ryokan and hotels.

Snow Play at Inawashiro and Room Tour Hotel Listel | Filipino in Japan

Located in the southern part of the Tohoku region, Inawashiro is one of Japan’s premier tourist spots, offering visitors the opportunity to see nature in all its magnificence regardless of season. Home to Japan’s fourth biggest lake, Lake Inawashiro, one of the country’s top one hundred mountains, Mt. Bandai, and birthplace of Nobel Prize candidate Hideyo Noguchi, it’s also easily accessible from Tokyo (2 hours and 15 minutes by Shinkansen and JR lines) and Sendai (1 hour 30 miutes).

With an abundance of outdoor activities both in winter and summer, including skiing and hiking, and having suffered only minimal impact from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake disaster, Inawashiro and its tourist industry welcomes many visitors from both Japan and abroad year round.
