Our visit Nikko travel guide covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting mountains, waterfalls, temples, shrines and lakes. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Nikko tourism brochure, Nikko itinerary or Nikko, Japan tour.

10 Things to do in Nikko Tour | Japan Travel Guide Video Transcript:

After a month in Tokyo, Nikko was everything we were hoping for! We knew we were in for a treat on the train ride over once we started seeing forests and mountains all around us and the town did not disappoint.

Nikko was the breath of fresh air we were looking for; during our visit we hiked through shrines and temples, cruised a beautiful lake at the base of a volcano, sampled some local dishes featuring tofu skin, and basically had the perfect city break.

So in this travel guide, we are going sharing some of our favourite things to do in Nikko, so you too can plan your weekend escape!

The Shinkyo Bridge you see today was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some form has stood on this very same spot for much longer...even if its origins are a bit unclear.

Nikko is home to numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. We focused our visit on the Toshogu Shrine.

Now for a quick history lesson; the Toshogu shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was Japan’s last feudal military government, with the shogun as its leader.

Kegon is Nikko’s most famous waterfall. It stands almost 100 meters tall and the waters that feed it comes directly from Lake Chuzenji.

We were feeling pretty hungry after all that sightseeing, so we decided to find a restaurant serving up the local specialty: yuba! Or tofu skin.

I ordered the ramen with yuba and Sam got the udon with yuba. The tofu skin was fluffy and absorbed all the flavours of the miso.

Lake Chuzenji is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. We cruised around the lake for a bit, but then got off at one of the early stops to continue onwards to Yumoto Onsen.

Yumoto is a small hot springs town that is located in part of Nikko National Park. We then enjoyed a little walk along Lake Yunoko, before hopping back on a bus to Senjougahara Moor.

The Senjogahara Marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some great hiking opportunities within Nikko National Park.

And that’s a wrap for our Nikko travel guide! This proved to be the perfect weekend escape from Tokyo. We visited everything you see here over the course of 2 days, but this place is even better if you can come for 3 or 4 nights. Nature abounds, there are countless shrines and temples to visit, plus the local cuisine was exquisite! Now you have a few ideas of things to do around Nikko when you visit. Wishing you happy travels and see you next time!

This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

Trip from Tokyo to NIKKO, JAPAN | Places to Visit, What to Eat & Ryokan Stay ????????????

Taking you with me on a 2-day healing trip to Nikko, Japan, a small city in the mountains located 144 kilometres up north of Tokyo, and is home to some of Japan’s most enchanting nature trails, waterfalls, hot springs, zen gardens and shrines.

The fact that Nikko is located further up north means that Autumn begins earlier here. We'll start to see Autumn foliage since mid-October, making Nikko a scenic place to visit during this time. One of the biggest highlights of this town are The Shrines and Temples of Nikkō, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it comprises of 103 buildings or structures and the natural scenery that is around it. Toshogu Shrine was undeniably one of the most lavishly decorated shrines I have ever come across in Japan, from its wooden carvings, vibrant colours and hints of gold.

Although what I've filmed would not be able to capture the true beauty of this town fully, in this vlog, I hope to show you some things to do/places to visit/eat in Nikko (not only in Autumn, but throughout the whole year), as well as places to view the beautiful Autumn Foliage. I hope you enjoy this vlog as much as I enjoyed editing it! ???? Hope this will be able to act as a travel guide for you if you are deciding on going on a weekend trip or day trip near from Tokyo :)

JAPAN: This place is REAL: ASHIKAGA AMAZING TEMPLES & More (Japan Travel Vlog Guide)

Japan Travel Guide: Ashikaga, Tochigi has more temples than Kamakura! And I visited some that should not be missed!

00:55 Gyodosan Joinji Temple

The temple is called the ‘Koyasan of Kanto’ and is built in the mountains surrounded by steep cliffs. It is said to have been founded by Gyoki Shonin in 714 and flourished as a place of mountain temple worship. The view from the Seishin-tei tea house on top of the cliff walls has been depicted in Hokusai’s ‘Hanging-cloud Bridge’. Designated as the prefecture’s first scenic spot in 1975.

Approximately 10 minutes from Ashikaga Interchange on the Kita Kanto Expressway
Approximately 30 minutes from Ota Kiryu Interchange on the Kita Kanto Expressway
Approximately 40 minutes from Sano Fujioka Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway
Approximately a 40 walk from ‘Gyodosan’ stop on the Ashikaga city bus Gyodo bus route.

04:25 Chorin-ji Temple

This friendly temple has a coffee shop that operates twice a week at no set schedule between 10-12am.

It is famous for its autumn leaves. Momijigari is the Japanese tradition of visiting areas where leaves have turned red in the autumn. The word comes from the two Japanese words momiji (紅葉) meaning red leaves or maple tree and kari (狩り), hunting. It is also called kōy

07:08 Komyoji Temple

Komyoji Temple has a long history. Beautiful with its landscaped garden. This temple is very active and offers many activities.

About 1km northwest from Ashikaga IC (about 5 minutes)
Train: Approximately 5 km north of Ashikagashi Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line (20 minutes by taxi)
About 4km north from JR Ryomo Line Ashikaga Station (15 minutes by taxi)

09:50. Saishoji Temple

This temple was founded by Gyoki and built by Emperor Shomu. The current Chief Priest is the 94th in the line.

In the 8th century, this area was close to the northern border of Japan, and the Tohoku region was settled by the Emishi, a people who did not belong to the central government in Nara or Kyoto.

Therefore, Bishamonten, the god of war who protected the north, was enshrined here.
Later, this temple became a sacred place where warlords prayed for victory in battle, many monks have been praying for the peace and security of the nation, and people make prayers.

Access
30 minutes from Ashikaga I.C on the Kita-Kanto Expressway
25 minutes from Oota-Kiryu I.C on the Kita-Kanto Expressway
60 minutes from Sano-Fujioka I.C on the Tohoku Expressway

10 Cheap Things To Do in Tokyo during your vacation!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Being on a budget doesn’t mean you should stay at home! No matter the season, travel in Japan is always a good idea. We gathered places near Tokyo that will help sate your wanderlust without breaking the bank, and give you the opportunity to explore even more of this beautiful country.

Welcome to things to do channel we publish new content every day. So be sure to subscribe and don't forget to ring the bell to be updated on our latest videos.

Here are 10 places to go to in Japan on a budget.

Kamakura.

Kamakura is easily accessible from Tokyo. A one-way trip can take around an hour and 30 minutes and costs about ¥1,000 depending on where you depart from. If you plan on doing a little beach hopping, you can also purchase the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass, which costs ¥1,470 and can make a round-trip much cheaper.

Kawagoe.

Only an hour and 30 minutes from Ikebukuro, Kawagoe is also referred to as Little Edo, and it's a dream come true for history buffs! Part of the town has been lovingly maintained, with buildings that date back to the Meiji Period (1868-1912). It's an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, immersed in the atmosphere of a bygone era. The area is also famous for sweet potatoes, which means there are many delicious sweet potato dishes to enjoy.

Yokohama.

Yokohama is the second biggest city in Japan after Tokyo, and as such it has all the modern amenities one would expect. Yokohama is incredibly easy to access from Tokyo, and several train lines offer direct service that won't cost more than a few hundred yen.

Mount Takao & Mount Mitake.

Mount Takao is a classic for residents of Tokyo. The trip to Takaosanguchi takes about an hour and costs about ¥400 from Shinjuku. The most popular trail, Trail No.1, is easy enough and isn't particularly taxing, but there are slightly more difficult trails for those who like a challenge.

Tsukuba.

If you're a science whiz, then Tsukuba is the place for you! Also known as Science City, Tsukuba is a great place to learn about Japan's cutting edge technology. There's the Space Center, where visitors can join a tour of the facilities, learn more about Japan’s role in space exploration and observe models of parts of the space station.

Enoshima & Jogashima.

Enoshima is another popular day trip for Tokyoites and is a stop on the Odakyu Line. But if you're looking for a bargain, the best deal is the Enopass, which combines trains and entrance to four popular attractions (Enoshima ESCAR, Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden, Enoshima Lighthouse Observation Tower, and Enoshima Iwaya cave) for a mere ¥1,970.

Zushi.

Although Kamakura and Enoshima also have beaches, another favorite beach destination from Tokyo is Zushi. The popularity can be partly explained by how easy it is to reach—just take the Shonan-Shinjuku Line from Shinjuku Station, transfer to the Yokosuka Line at Totsuka Station, and you’re set! The price for this trip is around ¥1,000. Depending on where you are in Tokyo, it might be cheaper to take the Toyoko Line from Shibuya Station, and then transfer at Yokohama to the Yokosuka Line. That second trip costs about ¥600.

Nikko.

If you thought going to Nikko was too expensive, think again! Nikko is famous for both its historical landmarks and its natural beauties, such as mountains and onsen, and you can enjoy the splendor of nature without having to splurge. The Nikko World Heritage Area 2-Day Pass offers one round-trip from Asakusa to Shimo-Imaichi on Tobu bus and railway lines for only ¥2,000 (about US$18) and even includes a discount ticket to the popular theme park Edo Wonderland as well as other promotions. Even if you don’t plan to stay overnight, the pass is still convenient. The trip to Nikko takes around two hours.

Chichibu.

Chichibu is about an hour from Tokyo and is famous for its bountiful nature and lovely shrines. Although we previously mentioned Mount Mitake, attractions in the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park also include the famous Mitsumine Shrine located at the top of the mountain with the same name, which is free to enter and Chichibu Lake.

Atami.

Looking for a hot spring resort near Tokyo? You might want to consider Atami, a classic getaway location for those in the Tokyo area. While Atami can be reached via the Shinkansen bullet train, it's a little more expensive. You can also make the trip in two hours for ¥2,000 (one-way) by riding regular trains from Shinagawa Station on the Tokaido Line. Buses from Shinjuku are also a good and cheap alternative and cost about the same

Nikko travel vlog day trip eating tour
I took a day trip to Nikko with my 70-year-old mother on a steam locomotive (SL). At Shimo-Imaichi Station, I took the SL Taiju Futara to Tobu Nikko Station and then took a bus to Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
We visited the famous three wise monkeys, the national treasure Yomeimon, the corridor, and the sleeping cat.
Meals are served at Nagomi Chaya, a kaiseki meal using yuba, a specialty of Nikko.
After that, we went to eat sweets.
Eat soppoyaki monkey and raw doragumo at Kumo IZU.
Next, I headed to Nikko Coffee to eat natural shaved ice.
I returned to Tobu Nikko Station and bought a Nyan Nyan set as a souvenir at Nikko Pudding Tei and ate half purin soft serve.
It takes about 2 hours from Tokyo, so it is recommended for a day trip.
You can eat delicious Japanese food and sweets while walking.
I hope it will be helpful for those who come to Japan.
