Walk around Ilomantsi through the Pogosta culture path (Pogostan kulttuuripolku), July 2022, Finland. Pogosta culture path consists of Orthodox Kokonniemi graveyard, Ilomantsi soldiers' cemetery, Lutheran Ilomantsin kirkko and the old rectory. Ending the walk next to water tower on top of the Pappilanvaara hill.
Ilomantsi is municipality and a village of Finland. It is located in the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of 4,646 (31 December 2021). The most eastern point of Finland and of the continental part of the European Union is located in Ilomantsi near the village of Hattuvaara. Ilomantsi has 17.4% Orthodox minority, which is the largest percentage among Finnish municipalities. The wooden Orthodox church of Ilomantsi is the largest in Finland and is dedicated to the prophet Elijah. The Orthodox community of Ilomantsi is more than 500 years old and counts 1,100 members.
Mateli Kuivalatar from Ilomantsi was a bard, or a rune singer. She sang her poems to Elias Lönnrot at her porch in Ilomantsi in 1838. They reflect her hardships and poverty, visible even today in the collection of lyrical folk poems, the Kanteletar, compiled by Lönnrot. He spent two days writing down Mateli’s poems, some of which are also found in Finland's national epic, the Kalevala.

Winter Walk in the center of municipality of Ilomantsi, Finland. Sunny winter day and lots of snow made this walk very pleasant and beautiful. I started the walk in the center of the municipality, continued via Orthodox and Lutheran Churches to the shores of lake Ilomantsinjärvi and came back via different route to the starting point.

Ilomantsin Sotatie, Öykkösenvaaran tarina
Öykkösenvaaran taistelualue Ilomantsissa on luokiteltu ensimmäisen tärkeysluokan sotahistorialliseksi kohteeksi. Alueella on Museoviraston ohjauksessa kunnostettuja puolustusrakenteita ja taisteluasemia, sekä rakennettu helppokulkuinen polku, jonka varrelle pystytetyissä opastustauluissa esitellään kunkin kohteen tausta. Jalustalle asetettu panssarintorjuntatykki, TykK/21.Pr:n muistokivi ja alueen yleisopaste muistuttavat alueen tapahtumista.
Rakennustaiteellisesti ainutlaatuisen, aina avoimen opastuskeskuksen tiloissa annetaan selkeiden karttapiirrosten ja tekstien avulla yleiskuva talvi- ja jatkósodan yleisestä historiasta. Useissa kookkaissa tauluissa keskitytään Ilomantsissa käytyihin taisteluihin, erityisesti kesään 1944.
Opasteisiin tutustumalla sotatapahtumista saa erittäin hyvän kuvan. Opastustauluja täydentävät tapahtumiin liittyvät autenttiset, kookkaat ja koskettavat valokuvat. Kuvin ja tekstein esitellään myös joitakin Ilomantsin taisteluihin osallistuneita Mannerheim-ristin ritareita ja käytössä olleita asetyyppejä.
Öykkösenvaaran umpeen kasvanutta maisemaa avattiin syksyllä 2020 räjäyttämällä noin 60 puunrunkoa.

Unsere Reise durch Finnland geht weiter. Wir fahren mal wieder an die russische Grenze, in die östlichste Gemeinde Finnlands, nach Ilomantsi in Nordkarelien. Hier gehören über 17% der Bevölkerung der orthodoxen Kirche an. In der Kirche in Ilomantsi hören wir endlich mal wieder Livemusik, nämlich eine Chorprobe. Weiter geht es zu herrlichen Wandergebieten durch Wälder, Schluchten und an Seen. Ja und Seen gibt es hier im Südosten Finnlands reichlich. Die finnische Seenplatte ist das größte Seengebiet Europas. In Helsinki endet unsere dreiwöchige, wunderschöne und entspannte Reise durch Finnland. Wir schauen uns noch die Altstadt an und fahren zur Festung Suomenlinna, die auf mehreren miteinander verbundenen Inseln vor Helsinki liegt.
Aber jetzt sind wir gespannt, was uns in Estland erwartet und freuen uns auf`s nächste Reiseziel.
