Discovering Slavonia - wine cellars of Ilok
While travelling through Slavonia, our exquisite taste for wines took us to Ilok as it is recognized as one of the centers of wine production.
This wine growing region is rich in cultural herritage which is a blend of historical influences and its traditional culture. But we are not here to talk about culture, not yet, at least.
The most famous wine cellars are the ones standing in front of us - Iločki podrumi dating back from 15 th and 18th ct. We had the privilege to enter both - you can smell the special environment these wines mature in, and impressive wine barrels almost leave you breathless.
Only by standing next to one , you get the feeling how enormous they really are. But the most striking moment is when you realize we are standing next to the precious wine archive, filled with extremely old and expensive wines, maybe too exclusive for regular folks like us but suitable for royal elite - it is said that queen Elisabeth orders regularly.
The older the wine, the better it gets but you have to be prepared to pay a significant amount (of money) to indulge in such pleasures. All this wine can make people hungry, but with home made food made in old cellar restaurant problem is solved. Interesting surrounding of the former winery gives you a cozy and warm atmosphere.
After endulging your hedonistic urges, we strongly suggest to go outside and take a walk through nature - discovering the magical presence of the ancient ages when great battles were fought. The walls of the Ilok Fort take us to the 15th ct. when the castle was originally built. Situated on a hill above the town center, offering views on the Danube and the Pannonian Plain the history reveals itself.
Having changed many owners, the castle witnessed time passing by . This rich area was a strategic point for Romans since it was an eastern border of Roman Empire and a boundary (dividing line) between a civilization and barbaric world. Later on, after the Castle was built, the Ottomans conquered Ilok in 16th Ct but haven't stayed very long since the Europeans wan it back.
After restoration in 1945. It was opened for visitors in 2010.
The look on the impressive width of the Danube river makes you think that time does not pass by, just like the river, it continues. Visiting other places, gathering new experiences, it always keeps moving.

Welcome to Ilok, to Radoš, where you will enjoy the wines and the view of the vast vineyards, where the magic of taste originated - in miraculous peace.
The Papak family winery, in Ilok, is a young winery, founded in 2014, but based on many years of work and experience in viticulture and winemaking of the whole family.
The Papak family owns 13 hectares of their own vineyards in Ilok at the position of Radoš or Radoško brdo, which is also the easternmost wine-growing position, both in Ilok and in the whole of Croatia.
This position actually represents the slopes of Fruška gora which with their long plateaus or plateaus fall towards the Danube river, southern and southwestern exposures and all day sunny allow the vine to use all its potential and create top quality, first grapes and then wine.
In the middle of these vineyards there is a winery with a tasting room, on the site of the birth house of the owner of the winery where he lived until he was ten years old. Growing up in that house, where he and his siblings helped his parents with jobs in agriculture, and especially in the vineyard, an affinity for this profession was created. By doing this work, the affinity grew into a true love of the vine and wine.
The vineyards were planted between 2001 and 2010, and the following grape varieties were planted in it:
graševina as dominant or most represented
traminac as the most famous variety of Ilok
Rhine Riesling
chardonnay
In addition to these four white varieties, there are two black or red varieties in the plantations:
cabernet sauvignon
cabernet franc
Following the above, the winery offers white varietal wines with one quality wine and a line of top wines Radosh:
graševina classic
graševina Radosh
traminac Radosh
Rhine Riesling Radosh
chardonnay Radosh
Of the red wines, we offer one red wine that is a mixture of these two red varieties and is called: Cabernet sauvignon - Cabernet franc Radosh. One very popular wine was also produced and offered - a refreshing opolo or rose, and it was obtained only from the Cabernet Franc variety.
Guided by the creativity and beauty of this business, they expanded their offer with two sparkling wines: Radosh White, obtained from the Chardonnay variety and Radosh Rose from Cabernet Franc, and crowned with the kings of flavors:
It is in the family's interest to show all their products and qualities, so as part of the winery it has equipped a tasting room where it offers presentations and wine tastings at a high professional level. , ham, greaves, bacon, etc. Freshly baked salty rolls, greaves, torn underpants and other traditional delicacies go well with all this.

Explore the wonderful wine regions on the Danube Trail of Croatia, Serbia and Romania!
Situated between the Danube and the Sava, with numerous channels and lazy waterways cutting across it, the Baranja lowland enjoys a moderate continental climate and boasts ideal vine growing terrain. Fields of wheat and rolling hills covered in vineyards, with charming cottages in between, that’s Baranja. Many of these cottages have wine cellars, some containing 200-year-old barrels.The word “Baranja” in Hungarian means “the Mother of Wine” and that is why visitors really must explore the oldest cellar.
Ilok is the easternmost town of the Republic of Croatia and a place where the East meets the West. It rises elegantly above the Danube, surrounded by the slopes and magnificent vineyards of Fruška Gora. It is a town of long history with interesting cultural contrasts woven into its medieval town, one of the largest urban and fortification complexes of northern Croatia and the Danube basin. However, Ilok is, above all, the Danube kingdom of wine known for its Traminac and other varieties which have been pleasing its visitors for a long time.
The Fruška gora region is most famous for its National Park, sixteen Serbian Orthodox monasteries and, of course, its very old winemaking tradition. The Roman emperor Probus was responsible for the start of viniculture in this area in the 3rd century AD. The Fruška Gora vineyards decorate the lower slopes of the mountain and are blessed with a good microclimate. Sixty privately owned wine cellars offer samples for tasting.
The wines of Negotinska Krajina used to be popular throughout Europe, Russia and Austria-Hungary and even had a specific association for trading the wines of Negotin. As early as the 17th century, the wine-growers of this region began to build their pimnica breweries where they preserved their wine in the stone villages. The beautiful locations of the wine settlements of Rajac, Rogalj, Smedovac, Štubik and Bratujevac have been preserved for visitors to enjoy today.
Muntenia and Oltenia wine region is located south of the central Carpathians in Romania, and the vineyards there cover approximately 104,000 hectares. An ideal mix of Continental and Mediterranean climates, the local micro-climate and soil create a perfect environment for excellent, full-bodied red wines. This wine region is located in the Mehedinci district with the county seat of Drobeta-Turnu Severin situated on the Danube in the famous touristic region of Iron Gate.
The Roman Emperors and Danube Wine Route, with its Danube and Adriatic Trails, extends through nine European countries and it is a network of sub-destinations, created around individual archaeological sites, locations, places and buildings, which are monuments to the leadership of the Roman emperors in Late Antiquity. The wine part of the Route incorporates the regions which continue the tradition of wine production begun in Roman times. For the indigenous peoples, who lived and worked alongside of the Roman soldiers, one can infer that a way “to act Roman” and in a certain sense “to be Roman” was to acquire a taste for this new beverage from the Mediterranean world. The Route was certified as a European Cultural Route by the European Institute for Cultural Routes (EICR).

Ovaj video nas vodi na putovanje kroz prekrasne krajolike Srijema i Slavonije. Krećemo iz Iloka prema Čepinu, prolazeći kroz slikovita mjesta kao što su Šarengrad, Mohovo, Opatovac i Lovas. No, umjesto da se vratimo istim putem, odlučujemo se za alternativnu rutu prema Tovarniku. Prolazimo kroz mjesta poput Ilače, Banovaca, Orolika, Srijemskih Laza i Mirkovaca, sve do Vinkovaca. Tamo se vozimo Vinkovačkom zaobilaznicom prema Jarmini, a potom kroz Gaboš, Markušicu Podrinje, Adu, Laslovo, Ernestinovo i Divoš. Na kraju, skrećemo prema Ivanovcu i stižemo do Čepina, završavajući ovu nezaboravnu vožnju kroz prekrasan krajolik Hrvatske.
