Adventures in Ichinoseki, Japan

I've just returned from a foodie adventure traveling throughout Japan, checking out places featured in the Japanese government's new Savor Japan ( food program. My first stop was Ichinoseki in Iwate prefecture, about three hours from Tokyo. We took the Hayabusa bullet train and spent two days exploring the region. This is from our stop at the Honederamura Shoen Iseki historic site, where we made and ate mochi and from the little ryokan or traditional inn we stayed in.

JAPAN TRAVEL VLOG - EXPLORING ICHINOSEKI - TEMPLES, FOOD AND ARTISINAL ICE CREAM

A few years ago, I had an amazing foodie adventure in Japan. I visited many places off the normal tourist track, including the city of Ichinoseki in Iwate Prefecture. This city is about three hours north of Tokyo (via bullet train) in the northern part of the country.

This Japan travel vlog shows some of the highlights of my visit to Ichinoseki. It shows some of the temples I visited, some of the incredible meals I had and the cool little inn / guesthouse where I stayed. It was my first time visiting Japan and the first time sleeping on tatami mats.

All about Iwate | One Minute Japan Travel Guide

More information about Iwate:

Geography

Located in northern Japan, Iwate Prefecture is the second-largest province among Japan’s 47 prefectures next to Hokkaido. With a total area of 15,275 km2(5,898 mile2), it is larger than the world’s 160th-largest nation of East Timor(14,919 km2 = 5,760 mile2). That being the case, Iwate has numerous areas to see such as the ocean, mountains and highlands.

Landmarks

After enjoying World Heritage sites such as Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture’s largest city of Morioka which is the starting point for any sightseeing and the beautiful Jodogahama Beach which is said to be a paradise on Earth, you can also head for places such as Hachimantai where you can soak in the bubbling waters of an onsen while sipping on some sake.

Food

If you’re looking for cuisine, Morioka is the ideal place. The 3 greatest noodle dishes of wanko soba, jajamen and Morioka reimen can be found in Morioka City. The seafood to be found off the Sanriku coast is also famous. This area which has cold and warm currents making contact is well-known as an excellent fishing ground with great hauls and as one of the top three fishing areas on the planet. Sea urchin, scallop, salmon and abalone are especially good.

Getting Around

The JR Tohoku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is convenient to reach Morioka and Ichinoseki from Tokyo. With the stations there as your starting point, renting a car is handy. There are also plenty of long-distance bus lines running among the cities of Iwate.

Accommodations

There are accommodations at Morioka Station where the Shinkansen stops as well as Ichinoseki Station which is the launching point for any sightseeing in Hiraizumi.

▼Beautiful Countryside Steeped in History and Tradition: Ichinoseki in Iwate Prefecture

Located at the southernmost tip of Iwate Prefecture in Japan’s Tohoku region, Ichinoseki is a treasure trove of beautiful nature, delicious food and fascinating culture. Besides serving as a gateway to the famous World Heritage Site of Hiraizumi, the city maintains traditions developed centuries ago which still flourish in areas, such as iron crafts, Japanese paper, and cuisine. It may be a world away from urban Tokyo, but the two-hour journey by Shinkansen makes Ichinoseki remarkably accessible.

Gembikei Gorge ( Ichinoseki City )

( National place of scenic beauty; natural monument )
Gembikei Gorge is a dynamic 2-km gorge formed by the Iwai River flowing from Mt. Kurikoma. In 1927, it was designated as a national place of scenic beauty and a natural monument. The rough boulders on either side of the river and the beautiful clear water become colored with cherry blossoms in the spring, azaleas in the early summer, and the autumn foliage. The sound of the water echoes against the rocks and fills the gorge. From April through October, you can also ride an excursion carriage around the gorge.

Gembikei is famous for its dango, or sweet rice dumpling. There are many dango shops, but the most famous is the Kakko-ya, established in 1878, and its Kakko Dango, also known as the Flying Dango. You put money in a basket hanging on a cable stretched across the river and knock on a board to signal the store on the other side of the river; the basket is then pulled up to the store, and comes back flying across the river with dango and tea inside. Three types of dango are available: an ( red bean ) , goma ( sesame ) , and mitarashi ( sweet soy sauce syrup ) .

Geibikei Gorge ( Ichinoseki City )

( Special historic site )
Geibikei is a 2-km gorge formed by the Satetsu River, surrounded by soaring cliffs of over 50 meters. The name Geibi, which means lion nose, comes from a limestone near the end of the gorge which resembles a lion's nose.

It is famous for its 90-minute round-trip boat ride, with a great view of waterfalls, impressive rocks, a limestone cave, etc. At the half way point of the ride, you can get off the boat for a walk. There is a large cliff with a small hole, and you can purchase undama or luck stones ( 5 stones for 100 yen ) and try to throw them into the hole; if you are successful, you will get good luck. There are many fish in the river, which you can feed from the boat. During the downstream ride, you can enjoy the boatman sing a local folk song called Geibi Oiwake. From December through February, you can enjoy a hot nabe dish on a boat with a kotatsu, a low table which also serves as a heater.

Geibikei offers beautiful scenery throughout the year, such as the fresh green of the spring, autumn foliage, and purple wisteria flowers on the cliffs and on the trellis at the end of the gorge in the spring.

The warmth of the people you meet on your journey, and the beauty of nature here, adds to the excitement of the last trip to the gay valley. People are throwing something, something eagerly. When I get close, I try to put a stone through a small hole across the river. This is not to cry and throw it in the hole to test the luck. Ten words are written, and it is said that the origin is accomplished by choosing the letter which it originates and entering there. Fortune stone has wishes, love, health, fortune telling. There is no man or woman nor child to choose fortune stone and wish to wish. What are you praying for today? I want to try it because I want to reach it. Though he threw it hard, he did not reach it. I begged for a wish of love. failure. The second is failure or failure. The way of love is far from me. The appearance of the bed in the hallway seemed to me. But with nature in such a wonderful nature, what about this and what is this? The high rocks and forests surrounding the gay rain valley seem to comfort me. Because both sides are surrounded by rocks, the voices sound and the scenery looks good. It feels like a different place. The boatman comforts with the song.

Geibikei Gorge | National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument | Iwate-ken, Japan

Geibikei (猊鼻渓) is a ravine on the Satetsu River in the city of Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument since 1923. In 1927 it was also selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan. Geibikei is located in southern Iwate Prefecture, and is approximately two kilometers long. The river is surrounded by soaring cliffs of over 50 meters in height, and peaking at 124 meters, with fanciful rock formations created by erosion and numerous waterfalls.

The gorge is just a short walk from Geibikei Station along the JR Ofunato Line.
The scenery along the gorge is attractive at any time of the year, but particularly so during the fall color season which usually peaks in late October and early November and around mid May when the wisteria flowers are usually in bloom. Carps and ducks are among the animals living in the gorge. It is possible to buy special snacks and feed them from the boat.

Tours depart roughly once per hour. Each boat can seat several dozen passengers who are supposed to take off their shoes before sitting onto the mat on the floor of the boat. During the ride, the boatman provides explanations in Japanese and performs a local folk song. A couple of souvenir shops with restaurants are located next to the boat pier.

The tour leads about one kilometer into the gorge and back. At the turning point, passengers leave the boat for 15-20 minutes to walk a few hundred meters further into the gorge. There they can view a large rock, shaped like a lion's nose, after which the gorge was named. Furthermore, tourists can buy small lucky stones and try to throw them into an opening in the cliff on the opposite side of the river.

It is enjoyed by taking a calm, 90 minute ride on a flat-bottomed boat navigated by a boatman with a pole. Pleasant natural scenery with impressive, tall cliffs and rock formations can be viewed along the way.

Measures were in place for the virus, there were alcohol spray around the ticket booth area. Masks were worn by everyone, including staff and river guides.

Our kids enjoyed throwing the stone, feeding the ducks and atmosphere.
The gorge itself is so beautiful. A very natural place.

Iwate is made up of people's wisdom and skill combined with the delicacies of the sea, the delicacies of the mountains, and the abundant natural blessings. It is the Gengbi valley where you can feel another attraction of trip. When people take something out of the basket, the basket goes up again. What the hell? I also went up. It turns out that this is an old dumplings shop. If you place an order below, it is sometimes referred to as a dumpling that is delivered through a rope and flying through the sky. It's green tea? It's green tea. Are you okay? It's okay, but I was worried that the green tea was overflowing in the shaking basket. What made you carry this on the rope? On what occasion did you make this happen? I've been doing it for about 130 years. My grandfather started, not me. I have not even (my great grandfather) ever been. But now I'm like my grandfather. The store, which was founded in 1878, has been selling ropes since the beginning and has been going on for over 130 years. The taste of dumplings is also excellent, so there are many tourists visiting here. It was like this because I wanted to convey my heart to foreigners somehow. I feel the attentive care of the master. I went down and put money in the basket and knocked on the wooden board and tried to make an order. Then, after a while, the national anthem suddenly rings, and a basket of dumplings with Korean and Japanese flags is brought down. It was full of dignity filled with caring and warm heart of master uncle.
