9. Chocolate
Belgium is famed for its high quality chocolate and over 2,000 chocolatiers, both small and large. Belgium's association with chocolate goes back as far as 1635 when the country was under Spanish occupation. From the early 20th century, the country was able to import large quantities of cocoa from its African colony, the Belgian Congo.
8. Castles
From French-style chateaux to Crusader-era ruins, Belgium is overloaded with spectacular castles. Antwerp and Ghent both retain medieval ones right in their city centres. And Namur, like Huy and Dinant, is dominated by a massive fortress citadel that retained military importance well into the 20th century.

If you love the medieval charm of Bruges but want to be a little more original, a great choice is Gghent. this historic city also has its share of canalside splendour, a great arts scene and a grittier charm that many visitors find refreshing. Or try Mechelen. it's overloaded with splendid churches and the grand central square is graced with a fanciful town-hall complex that's only topped for sheer flamboyance by the statue-festooned equivalent in Leuven, Belgium'''s ancient university city.

If your neighbours' idea of a good time is to dress up in barrel costumes jingling with little bells, don spooky masks and ostrich feather hats, and then go throwing oranges at passers-by, you might wonder about their sanity. then again you might just be living in Binche. That's the town whose unique mardi gras carnival has long been so indulgent it gave the english language the term 'binge'.

For a comparatively small country, Belgium produces a very large number of beers in a range of different styles -- in fact, it has more distinct types of beer per capita than anywhere else in the world. In 2011, there were 1,132 different varieties of beer being produced in the country.

Grottes de Remouchamps or The Remouchamps Caves Located in Belgium is the longest Underground Boating in the World.The Caves are formed by two galleries visiting on foot and by boat. They are nicknamed the Wonders of Wonders & one of the most visited tourist places in Belgium.
The Remouchamps caves are on the boundary of 3 geological regions: The Condroz formed of limestone & sanstone, limestone Calestienne and The Schistose Ardenne.
The Remouchamps caves were formed in limestone more than a million years ago by the presence of an underground river named Rubicon
8,000 years ago, Paleolithic hunters came here frequently.Temperature inside the caves oscillates between 8 and 10 degrees. All Tours of the Remouchamps caves are guided in several languages. They last about 1 and a quarter hour.

Cycling[edit]
Huy is home to the finish of the La Flèche Wallonne (English: Walloon Arrow; Dutch: Waalse Pijl), an important 1-day cycling race held midweek in mid-April. The race traverses, and finishes, at the summit of the Mur de Huy (English: Wall of Huy), a climb of about 1 kilometer with an average gradient of 10%, with sections of 20%. Huy has also been used in the Tour de France four times: 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2015.

A new fortress was built by the Dutch in 1818 at the same strategic location above the town. The 19th century was a period of relative prosperity based on the paper and other industries. The decline of heavy industry in the 20th century was felt here, as in other parts of Wallonia. Today, the city has started to prosper again, thanks in part to its tin products and tourist activity.
In 1970 the Tihange Nuclear Power Station was built.

Namur is an important commercial and industrial centre, located on the Walloon industrial backbone, the Sambre and Meuse valley. It produces machinery, leather goods, metals and porcelain.
Is Namur a nice city?
The Namur Citadel has a leg up though because it's a part of their visitors centre which it completely free to visit! It gave a really nice overview of the citadel over the centuries but also the city. ... It's a very well done museum but, it doesn't give you as much of a well rounded overview like Namur.
Is NAMUR worth visiting?
Namur's strategic position led to a number of sieges throughout its history. Due to these battles, the city has an interesting hodgepodge of architecture from different time periods. Namur also makes an excellent base for visiting the pretty villages of the Meuse and Semois Valleys.

Beautiful stations and lovely countryside | Through Belgium and the Netherlands from Huy to Arnhem
Huy's little station may not be well known, but Liège Guillemins, the work of architect Santiago Calatrava certainly is one of the most iconic 21st century stations so far built. And if you add onto that a cathedral of a station at Maastricht and a lovely regional hub at 's-Hertogenbosch, then we are in for a great day of station spotting!
Oh and as we follow the River Meuse from Belgium into the Netherlands, there's also quite a lot of waterside scenery to be had too.

Lüttich, eine Stadt in Belgien. Ein Lebensgefühl. Nur eine Stunde von Köln oder Brüssel entfernt, liegt Lüttich im Herzen Europas. Und es gibt hier alles für einen perfekten Wochenend-Trip. Wir zeigen Dir unsere Highlights im Video Lüttich in 5 Minuten.
Du kennst Lüttich sicher auch unter dem Namen Liège. Die Stadt ist bekannt für leckeres Bier, z.B. in der Brasserie C, für knusprige Fritten (in Belgien sagt man „Fritten“, nicht „Pommes“, so wurde es uns erklärt) und natürlich für die Lütticher Waffeln.
Die Stadt Lüttich kannst du gut zu Fuß erkunden. Die wohl bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit ist der Montagne de Bueren, den du über die vielen Stufen erklimmen kannst. Außerdem ist der Bahnhof von Lüttich (Gare de Liege-Guillemins) sehr sehenswert. Zu den Top 10 Sehenswürdigkeiten in Lüttich zählen auch La Boverie, Coteaux de la Citadelle, die Kathedrale, La Cite Miroir und die Opera Royal de Wallonie-Liège – die bei unserem Besuch leider geschlossen war.

Namur est la capitale de la région de la Wallonie, en Belgique. À la confluence de la Meuse et de la Sambre se trouve la citadelle de Namur, une forteresse médiévale dotée de jardins, d'une vue panoramique et d'une statue de bronze représentant une tortue géante. Dans le centre-ville, le musée Félicien Rops expose les œuvres érotiques, datant du XIXe siècle, de l'artiste éponyme originaire de Namur. Il accueille également des expositions temporaires. Why you should visit Tournai! One of Belgium oldest cities. Dating back to Roman times, it was the home to kings, a beautiful cathedral, and was also famous for its tapestry-weaving.
Welcome to Robbie Travels and in today’s video, I am exploring the city of Tournai Belgium. Let’s explore the history and heritage of this city.
Tournai is a city in Wallonia. It is famed for its impressive Romanesque Cathedral. It was also the only Belgian city to ever be controlled by the English Throne. Tournai is a city with more than 2000 years of history. It’s one of the oldest cities in Belgium. And it’s the birthplace of France.
It was ruled by many different rulers from France, Spain, the Netherlands and even Austria. And all of them left their mark there. It’s the only Belgian town that was ruled by England during Henry VIII’s time. The city experienced its Golden Ages during the 14th and 15th Century. The city was heavily bombed during the Second World War. However, it was rebuilt after it, and today it’s glorious Golden Ages could be seen on its every corner.
Tournai is a lovely weekend destination for anyone interested in culture and history. However, it’s also a great place for enjoying wonderful Belgian cuisine. Easily reachable from London, Bruxelles or Amsterdam. The charming Belgian town offers culture and a wide variety of traditional beers.
▶️ Discover two UNESCO sites in Tournai
• Notre Dame Cathedral: Tournai Cathedral is an extravagant building that stands intimidating over the surrounding streets. Surviving both world wars, it was a tornado in 1992 that left the cathedral in need of serious restoration work. Despite the continuing building work the five bell towers of the Notre Dame stand tall and proud over the city.
• The second UNESCO World Heritage site is the Belfry. This is a freestanding tower, reaching 72 metres in height. First built in 1188, the Belfry has had numerous roles throughout its long life. From acting as a town siren, to a watchtower, to a prison, it's had an important role in Tournai's history.

Charming Bruges, Belgium: A 48-Hour Adventure
If you want to travel back in time, Europe is the perfect destination. Today, we are exploring the Medieval city of Bruges. It is the capital and the largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium.
Like Amsterdam, it is also called the Venice of the north.
Bruges is a perfect example of medieval settlement and has evolved over time. Gothic architecture is now part of the town’s identity.
Walk around the historic center. This is where you will find all the backdrops for the famous Bruges photographs on postcards. The city center is small, walkable and nearly car free, except for bicycles and horse-drawn buggies. Bruges is very safe. Like any tourist destination, be aware of pickpockets like anywhere else. Violent crimes are exceedingly rare.
We stayed at Hotel Het Gheestelic Hof; it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful family hotels in Bruges. It is in the heart of the historic city of Bruges, right in the middle of it all. The beautiful building dates from the 16th century and with the stately Gothic façade it still emanates a lot of its original glory.
