S1 – Ep 350 – Hartswater – A Touching Monument Honouring Women!

Our trip to Hartswater was truly memorable and welcoming. The Poplar trees lining the road, a unique sight found and the longest of its kind in the world, created a picturesque drive. The small, adorable church at the town's entrance was a touching monument honouring women who played a significant role during the depression and when the Vaalharts Water Scheme began. As we explored further, the bustling activity in the town was heartening to witness, and we were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a lively golf tournament at the town's Golf Course. The schools and sports facilities were in excellent condition, a testament to the town's dedication to maintaining their community. Even in the church they were sanding down the pews for varnishing before the next service. Hartswater left a lasting impression of a functional agricultural town filled with hardworking and caring individuals, making our visit truly special. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #hartswater

S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!

On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

S1 – Ep 355 – Dealesville – Viewing the Salt Pans During an Awesome Sunset!

Our visit to Dealesville was filled with delightful surprises and warm encounters. As we embarked on our journey to the town, we were thrilled to witness a warthog crossing the road with its tail held high while running through the open field, and the sight of farming vehicles along the way added to the rural charm. Upon entering the town, we sensed a contentment and pride among the locals. On the outskirts, we discovered a stunning salt pan, initially mistaken for a dam. In our explorations, we met a gentleman who had taken it upon himself to revive the old sports complex into a beautiful wedding venue and sports facility, and he generously invited us to his renovated guest house, which we would hope to overnight at someday. The church and Voortrekker memorials provided a glimpse into the history and culture of the town. However, the presence of a military contingent left us curious as to why they were there. Departing from Dealesville, we decided to stop at the salt pans one last time. They left us in awe of their natural beauty during sunset. Inspired by the community's earnest efforts to rejuvenate and uplift their beloved town, we left the town with sweet memories of our visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #dealesville

S1 – Ep 263 – Douglas – A Town at the Confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers!

It was once again one of those days where we only arrived at our overnight accommodation in Douglas late that evening because we got caught up at all our other stops throughout the day. The next morning we got an early start so we could see as much of Douglas as we could. It was raining on-and-off all morning, but that didn't slow us down one bit! We were very impressed with this town and found it very neat and organised. The highlight was our visit to the confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers. What a spectacle! This was amazing to see and a must-visit if you have not been there before. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #douglas #hopetown

S1 – Ep 269 – Griekwastad – A Fascinating Country Town in the Northern Cape!

As we drove up to Griekwastad we were greeted by a cemetery and then the monument of Andries Waterboer who was a Griqua captain and a leader of the local community back in the day. Driving up the main road was truly fascinating. We were met with one beautiful building after the other. I personally loved the poles in front of the Mary Moffat Museum where the folks of yesteryear would tie up their horses. This country town is a must-visit with so much to see. The church buildings, the Voortrekker monument and the old swimming pool were great to see even though the pool was out of commission. The Northern Cape province of South Africa is filled with wonderful history. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #griekwastad

S1 – Ep 341 – Laingsburg – Echoes of the Past and Resilient People!

Our long-awaited trip to Laingsburg, a small town on the N1, turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Intrigued by its history and particularly the devastating flood of 1981, we made a stop at the Flood Museum. The photographic evidence of the immense impact of the flood, with water levels twice as high as a person, left us astonished. Walking through the museum, we gained a deeper understanding of the hardships endured by the town's residents during that time and why the event is still vividly remembered today. As we continued exploring, the streets revealed remnants of the past, such as the old church and a cemetery where headstones were absent, possibly washed away by the flood. Learning about the town's captivating history added to our appreciation of the place, especially witnessing the old rail bridge, once destroyed by the flood but now restored to its original condition. Our trip to Laingsburg not only satisfied our curiosity but also allowed us to immerse ourselves in a place where the resilient people and the echoes of the past were palpable. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #laingsburg

Our visit to the charming town of Utrecht was truly captivating. Upon our arrival, we were immediately enveloped by the town's rich history, as evidenced by its beautiful and historic buildings. The town hall, an architectural masterpiece, left us in awe, while the Old Parsonage and the magnificent Dutch Reformed Church added to the town's undeniable charm. As we strolled through the town's cemetery, it became evident that Utrecht's history runs deep, with poignant monuments paying homage to its founding fathers and those who made sacrifices for its future. What made our visit even more intriguing was the proximity of the Balele Game Park. We were amazed to discover that animals could sometimes be observed in town after dark. Utrecht's blend of historical grandeur and natural wonder made us feel truly honoured to have experienced its unique and fascinating history. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #utrecht #balelegamepark

Hibberdene caravan park

A video on the Hibberdene caravan park
This channel documents my adventures travelling around Southern Africa in my caravan.
Two years ago I left the big city of Cape Town, towing my caravan and a speedboat with my lovely cat for company, never to return to the big city.
I'll be documenting my adventure and showing caravan parks that I spend time at in Southern Africa as well as some other subjects of interest to caravanners and adventurers in general.

This channel takes an in-depth look at smaller and off-grid living in Southern Africa.
I make all of the music and do the filming, voice and the edits myself.

The tiny house movement is small in Southern Africa, but is growing exponentially very quickly.
Southern Africa is vast and has areas of great beauty with weather that is unique and superb. These videos will interest adventurers of all ages. There are still ways to live in this world that allow one to wander the world, as John Wayne used to do in the old western movies.
As I get older I have the choice to sit in four walls, watch TV and get grumpy, or go off and have an adventure in my old age.
I've decided to choose the adventure and I'm surprised at what I've found. I'm seeing some great places and having some fantastic experiences.
Hopefully these videos will bring out your inner 'John Wayne'.

The Story of Big Lizzie, The World's Largest Tractor (so much more than The Big Tractor!)

Big Lizzie - in Mildura, she’s “the big tractor” but she’s so much more than that. Not a mere fibreglass replica created for a roadside attraction, she was an actual working tractor... kind-of. She was one of a kind in many ways, including her wheels which featured a very unique technology to better cover sandy terrain almost completely unique to her. I cover her story, what she was used for and her technical specifications.

Like the Dreadnought Wheel, the Nernst Lamp (
) was another promising technology, providing a better alternative to existing filament designs light bulbs. It used a ceramic filament instead, which doesn't burn out at high temperatures when exposed to oxygen. It was promising, but soon forgotten as tungsten filament light bulbs in a glass enclosure filled with inert gas provided greater efficiency, similar to how the caterpillar track replaced the dreadnought wheel.
