▶ HOKUTO
Hokuto City is a city located in the Yamanashi Prefecture of Japan. It is situated in the center of the prefecture and covers an area of 742.56 square kilometers. The city was officially established on April 1, 2004, by the merger of four towns and eight villages.
Geographically, Hokuto City is surrounded by beautiful mountains, including Mount Fuji, and has many rivers flowing throughout. The temperature ranges from as low as -15°C in winter to as high as 35°C in summer, making it an ideal place to visit during different seasons.
Hokuto City has a population of around 49,000 as of September 2021. The city has an aging demographic with a median age of 49.3 as of 2020, which is higher than the prefecture's median age of 46.6 and the national median age of 47.4. However, Hokuto City has a relatively low unemployment rate of around 2.5%, which is lower than the national average.
One of the main industries in Hokuto City is agriculture, with many farmers producing green tea, grapes, and peaches. The city is also known for its dairy products, including cheese and milk, which are produced in the surrounding mountains.
Tourism is also a significant industry in Hokuto City. The city is home to several ski resorts, including the popular ski resort, Fujiten Snow Resort. The city also has many hot springs (onsen) and other tourist attractions, such as the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts and the Kiyosato Educational Experiment Project.
In terms of transportation, the city is served by two train lines, the JR Chuo Line and the Minobu Line. The Chuo Expressway and the National Route 20 both run through the city, providing easy access by car.
Overall, Hokuto City is a beautiful place to visit with a rich natural scenery, unique culture, and many attractions to enjoy.
▶ YAMATAKA JINDAI ZAKURA
山高神代ザクラ or Yamataka Jingū Zakura is a sakura (cherry blossom) tree located in Hokuto, Yamanashi, Japan. It is believed to be over 1,500 years old, making it one of the oldest sakura trees in the world. The tree is also considered a sacred tree, as it is located near the Yamataka Jingū Shrine.
The Yamataka Jingū Zakura's trunk has a circumference of 12.5 meters and its branches stretch over an area of 25 meters. The tree blooms in late April to early May, with its delicate pink blossoms attracting thousands of visitors every year. The Yamataka Jingū Zakura is also illuminated at night during the peak of the cherry blossom season, creating a breathtaking sight that is well-worth experiencing.
The tree has survived multiple earthquakes, typhoons, and other natural disasters over the centuries and has become a symbol of perseverance and resilience for the people of Hokuto. The sakura's longevity and cultural significance have made it a designated natural monument by the Yamanashi prefectural government.
Visitors to the Yamataka Jingū Zakura can enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing) with views of the Yatsugatake Mountains in the background. The tree can be accessed from Hokuto Station or by using a car and parking at the Yamataka Jingū Shrine.
Overall, the Yamataka Jingū Zakura is a remarkable natural wonder that has captured the hearts of visitors for generations.

Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto trip and seat review
I travelled from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in Hokkaido by the Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen in the morning on day of my 7 days trip. I took a seat in the ordinary car (economy class) and Green car (business class). You can find how much better Green seat is than ordinary seat.
