The Mura Statistical Region is a statistical region in the north-east of Slovenia. It is predominantly agricultural with field crops representing over three quarters of the total utilised agricultural area, twice as much as the Slovene average. Climate and soil combined have made it the region with the highest crop production, but its geographical position and inferior infrastructure put it at a disadvantage and it is the region of Slovenia with the lowest GDP per capita (EUR 8,500) and the highest rate of registered unemployment. The region comprises the following municipalities: Apače, Beltinci, Cankova, Črenšovci, Dobrovnik, Gornja Radgona, Gornji Petrovci, Grad, Hodoš, Kobilje, Križevci, Kuzma, Lendava, Ljutomer, Moravske Toplice, Murska Sobota, Odranci, Puconci, Radenci, Razkrižje, Rogašovci, Sveti Jurij ob Ščavnici, Šalovci, Tišina, Turnišče, Velika Polana and Veržej. The population in 2004 was 122,717. Employment structure: 41.2% services, 44.8% industry, 14.0% agriculture. Murska Sobota (German: Olsnitz; Hungarian: Muraszombat) is a city in northeastern Slovenia. It is the centre of the City Municipality of Murska Sobota near the Mura River in the region of Prekmurje and is the regional capital.
Officially, the city is known as Murska Sobota, although informally it is usually simply referred to as Sobota by its inhabitants and Murska by people from other parts of Slovenia. The traditional German name of the city is Olsnitz, which is derived from the old Slovene name Olšnica. The modern Slovene name is a translation of the Hungarian name Muraszombat, which was the official name of the city until 1919. In Hungarian, szombat means 'Saturday', referring to the city's practice of holding fairs every week on that day. Postojna Cave is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world's largest karst monuments. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors. There are stalagmites, stalactites, and formations called curtains or draperies that look like folded curtains.
The Postojna Cave train has been taking visitors around the cave for 140 years. Its 3.7-kilometre long journey begins at the train-boarding platform of the unique cave railway, where – especially in the summer – a lot of hustle and bustle is present, the kind that is otherwise typical of the world's largest railway stations. In 1818, just over 300 metres were accessible, whereas today visitors get to enjoy more than 5 kilometres of show cave passages during regular cave tours lasting an hour and a half.
