Iizaka Onsen - 2,000 Year Old Hot Spring Town in Fukushima Japan
Join me on a stroll through Iizaka Onsen. Just 20 minutes from Fukushima station, this traditional hot spring town features a variety of eateries and nostalgic shops. Iizaka is home to over 40 traditional ryokans (Japanese-style inns), and 9 public baths, and 3 foot-baths. The temperature of the hot springs is slightly higher than normal, at around 42°C (107.6°F).

↪ P.S.: If you hate zoo environments or any sort of animal enclosure no matter if the conditions are well and good (as per what I witness during my visit), I suggest that you don’t visit this place or it will make you uncomfortable. As for me, I just try to keep an open mind; plus, I don’t immediately shun every animal park, especially if the animals are well-cared for (unless it's otherwise — do let me know). If it helps to note, foxes are one of the few animals who don’t suffer any type of stress when under captivity — but of course, I do know that it's ideal to rather let them be in the wild...
Yet again, their chances of survival in the wild is very slim especially with today's times. Looking at the facts, a fox in the wild has an average life span of 2-4 years only because of diseases, hunting practices and road accidents; but in places like this Fox Village, they can live up to 14 years. (Besides, you cannot imagine the number of people who would ‘kill’ for fox fur, nor the number of people who do fox hunting for fun/sport like the UK for example).

満開の花見山 Spring of Fukushima in Japan 福島の春 福島観光
2010年4月18日撮影。福島市内の南東に約4～5kmの距離に位置する小高い山が「花見山」。今や全国的に知られる花の名所になっている。ロウバイに始まり、サクラ、レンギョウ、ボケ、サンシュユ、モクレン、ハナモモなどの花々が次々に咲き競う。ここは一軒の花木の生産農家の阿部一郎さんが、自らの農地を「みんなにきれいな花を観てもらい心が安らげば」と先代と長い歳月をかけて作り上げ、無料で公開している個人所有の公園で阿部さんが「花見山公園」と命名。今では同公園の周辺の花木の生産農家も増え、春には地区一帯で花が咲き誇るため、「花見山」は総称として使用されている。この地が知られた理由は、日本を代表する写真家秋山庄太郎氏が、「福島に桃源郷あり」と毎年訪れ、その美しい風景は写真として全国に知れ渡るきっかけになった。今では全国から人々が訪れるようになり、「福島に花見山あり」と言われるほどの花の名所になった。

Autumn leaves in Urabandai
Urabandai is a highland 700-1,000 meters in the northern part of Fukushima Prefecture in the Tohoku Region.
About 300 lakes and ponds, including pond Goshikinuma and Lake Hibara, are scattered across Urabandai and the harmonious beauty of nature created by the abundant woodlands and lakes will certainly touch the hearts of all visitors.
There are some small islands close to the shoreline of Lake.
These islands add a special seasonal atmosphere to the area.
Another attraction of the Urabandai are its spectacular sightseeing roads that wind up the mountains, lead along ridges and provide breathtaking views onto the highlands and the volcanic scenery.
Can stroll under the beautiful red and yellow leaves.

神秘的な絶景 五色沼 福島の自然風景/This is the scenery of Goshikinuma Lakes, a famous tourist attraction in Urabandai, Fukushima Prefecture Japan.
Goshikinuma is a general term for many lakes and marshes such as Bishamon Swamp, Akanuma, Midoruma Marsh, Tatsunuma, Benten Swamp, Ruri Marsh, Aonuma Marsh, and Yaginuma Marsh. It is named because of its colorful and varied colors.
Emerald green, cobalt blue, turquoise blue, emerald blue, pastel blue, etc. are called mysterious lakes because their appearance differs depending on the weather, season, viewing angle and volcanic substances contained in the water.
You may find it difficult to go back and forth on this long promenade. However, the Goshikinuma Nature Exploration Road, which has entrances at both the Urabandai Product Center on the Hibara Lake side and the Urabandai Visitor Center on the opposite side, has a parking lot and a bus stop on either side.
You can walk on one way and return to the starting point using a local bus.

福島県裏磐梯の観光名所として知られている「五色沼湖沼群」の風景です。五色沼は、毘沙門沼・赤沼・みどろ沼・竜沼・弁天沼・るり沼・青沼・柳沼などの数多くの湖沼の総称で、色鮮やかで様々な色彩を見られることからこの名前が付けられました。
エメラルドグリーン、コバルトブルー、ターコイズブルー、エメラルドブルー、パステルブルーなど、天候や季節、見る角度や水中に含まれる火山性物質によって見え方が違う事から「神秘の湖沼」とも言われています。
約30の湖沼群で形成される五色沼のうち、観光用に自然探勝路が整備されているのは毘沙門沼から柳沼までの約3.6kmの区間で、桧原湖側から、柳沼→母沼→青沼→るり沼→弁天沼→竜沼→みどろ沼→赤沼→毘沙門沼の順に並ぶ9つの湖沼を約1時間10分から1時間30分で回る事ができる比較的平坦なハイキングコースとなっています。
遊歩道を往復するのが大変だと感じるかもしれませんが、桧原湖側の裏磐梯物産館と反対側の裏磐梯ビジターセンターの両方に入口がある五色沼自然探勝路は、どちら側にも駐車場と路線バスの停留所があるので、片道を徒歩で進み、帰りは路線バスを利用してスタート地点に戻るような散策方法も可能です。

福島と山形の県境、板谷峠を分け入った先にある秘湯、滑川温泉・福島屋さんのご紹介をします。こちらは峠を山形県側に越えたところで、山形県米沢市となります。高校時代から何度も泊っている、私個人として本当におすすめの温泉宿です。近くの姥湯温泉・五色温泉も素晴らしいそうです。
